Collectivity and Configuration Mixing inPb186,188andPo194

Lifetimes of prolate intruder states in {sup 186}Pb and oblate intruder states in {sup 194}Po have been determined by employing, for the first time, the recoil-decay tagging technique in recoil distance Doppler-shift lifetime measurements. In addition, lifetime measurements of prolate states in {sup 188}Pb up to the 8{sup +} state were carried out using the recoil-gating method. The B(E2) values have been deduced from which deformation parameters vertical bar {beta}{sub 2} vertical bar =0.29(5) and vertical bar {beta}{sub 2} vertical bar =0.17(3) for the prolate and the oblate bands, respectively, have been extracted. The results also shed new light on the mixing between different shapes.

Characterization of a new modular decay total absorption gamma-ray spectrometer (DTAS) for FAIR

Beta-decay studies are one of the main goals of the DEcay SPECtroscopy experiment (DESPEC) to be installed at the future Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR). DESPEC aims at the study of nuclear structure of exotic nuclei. A new modular Decay Total Absorption gamma-ray Spectrometer (DTAS) is being built at IFIC and is specially adapted to studies at fragmentation facilities such as the Super Fragment Separator (Super-FRS) at FAIR. The designed spectrometer is composed of 16 identical NaI(Tl) scintillation crystals. Radiopurity control in the NEXT-100 double beta decay experiment

An extensive material screening and selection process is underway in the construction of the "Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC" (NEXT), intended to investigate neutrinoless double beta decay using a high-pressure xenon gas TPC filled with 100 kg of Xe enriched in 136Xe. Determination of the radiopurity levels of the materials is based on gamma-ray spectroscopy using ultra-low background germanium detectors at the Laboratorio Subterraneo de Canfranc (Spain) and also on Glow Discharge Mass Spectrometry. Neck fragmentation in fission and quasifission of heavy and superheavy nuclei

The generalized approach is proposed for the ternary fission and the neck fragmentation of the dinuclear system formed in the heavy ion quasifission reactions. The light-charged-particles accompanied the fission and quasifission are the valuable probes for studies of the dynamics of the hyperdeformed nuclear configurations with neck. The developed model describes well the light-charged-particle emission probabilities and their mass distributions in the ternary fission of actinide nuclei. Migration of Nuclear Shell Gaps Studied in thed(Ne24,pγ)Ne25Reaction

The transfer of neutrons onto 24Ne has been measured using a reaccelerated radioactive beam of 24Ne to study the (d,p) reaction in inverse kinematics. The unusual raising of the first 3/2+ level in 25Ne and its significance in terms of the migration of the neutron magic number from N=20 to N=16 is put on a firm footing by confirmation of this state's identity. The raised 3/2+ level is observed simultaneously with the intruder negative parity 7/2- and 3/2- levels, providing evidence for the reduction in the N=20 gap. The dipole response of neutron-rich nuclei in the mass range from A = 10 to A = 22 and with mass to charge ratios of 2.5 to 2.8 has been invesitigated experimentally utilizing electromagnetic excitation in heavy-ion collisions at beam energies around 600 MeV/u.

The Beta-Delayed Proton and Gamma Decay of 27P for Nuclear Astrophysics

The creation site of 26Al is still under debate. It is thought to be produced in hydrogen burning and in explosive helium burning in novae and supernovae, and possibly also in the H-burning in outer shells of red giant stars. Also, the reactions for its creation or destruction are not completely known. When 26Al is created in novae, the reaction chain is: 24Mg(p,γ)25AI(β+v)25 Mg(p,γ)26Al, but this chain can be by-passed by another chain, 25Al(p, γ)26Si(p, γ)27P and it can also be destroyed directly. The reaction 26m Al (p, γ)27 Si* is another avenue to bypass the production of 26Al and it is dominated by resonant capture. We find and study these resonances by an indirect method, through the…

The limits of the nuclear landscape

In 2011, 100 new nuclides were discovered. They joined the approximately 3,000 stable and radioactive nuclides that either occur naturally on Earth or are synthesized in the laboratory. Every atomic nucleus, characterized by a specific number of protons and neutrons, occupies a spot on the chart of nuclides, which is bounded by 'drip lines' indicating the values of neutron and proton number at which nuclear binding ends. The placement of the neutron drip line for the heavier elements is based on theoretical predictions using extreme extrapolations, and so is uncertain. Structure of theN=27isotones derived from theAr44(d,p)Ar45reaction

2008

The $^{44}\mathrm{Ar}$($d,p$)$^{45}\mathrm{Ar}$ neutron transfer reaction was performed at $10A$ MeV. Measured excitation energies, deduced angular momenta, and spectroscopic factors of the states populated in $^{45}\mathrm{Ar}$ are reported. A satisfactory description of these properties is achieved in the shell model framework using a new $\mathit{sdpf}$ interaction. The model analysis is extended to more exotic even-$Z$ nuclei down to ${}_{14}^{41}{\mathrm{Si}}_{27}$ to study how collectivity impacts the low-lying structure of $N=27$ neutron-rich nuclei.
