γ-ray spectroscopy approaching the limits of existence of atomic nuclei: A study of the excited states ofPt168andPt169

2009

Excited states in the $N=90$ and $N=91$ Pt nuclei have been investigated using the JUROGAM and GREAT spectrometers in conjunction with the RITU gas-filled separator. These nuclei were populated via the reactions $^{92}\mathrm{Mo}(^{78}\mathrm{Kr},2n)$ and $^{94}\mathrm{Mo}(^{78}\mathrm{Kr},3n)$ at 335 and 348 MeV, respectively. The recoil-decay tagging technique has been used to correlate prompt $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ radiation with the characteristic $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ decays of $^{168}\mathrm{Pt}$ and $^{169}\mathrm{Pt}$. A $\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ analysis has allowed a level scheme for $^{168}\mathrm{Pt}$ to be reported for the first time and the l…

Transfer and neutron capture reactions toIr194as a test of Uν(6/12)⊗Uπ(6/4)supersymmetry

2008

The structure of $^{194}\mathrm{Ir}$ is investigated via ($n,\ensuremath{\gamma}),(n,{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}),(d,p)$, and ($\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{d},\ensuremath{\alpha}$) spectroscopy. The use of different methods leads to an almost complete level scheme up to high excitation energies including \ensuremath{\gamma}-decay and spin-parity assignments. A reanalysis of the formerly published ($n,\ensuremath{\gamma}$) data was triggered by our new ($d,p$) and ($\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{d},\ensuremath{\alpha}$) transfer reactions. The experimental level scheme is compared to predictions using extended supersymmetry. Herein, the classification of states was done according to q…

Development and applications of the IGISOL technique

2001

Abstract The development and present status of the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line technique is presented. Applications to nuclear physics research include decay spectroscopy of proton- and neutron-rich nuclei of refractory elements and studies of their ground-state properties by collinear laser spectroscopy. Future developments, including ion-beam manipulations by linear RFQ and Penning traps, are discussed together with high-energy applications of the IGISOL technique.

First Accurate Normalization of the β -delayed α Decay of N16 and Implications for the C12(α,γ)O16 Astrophysical Reaction Rate

2018

The C-12(alpha,gamma)O-16 reaction plays a central role in astrophysics, but its cross section at energies relevant for astrophysical applications is only poorly constrained by laboratory data. The reduced a width, gamma(11), of the bound 1(-) level in O-16 is particularly important to determine the cross section. The magnitude of gamma(11) is determined via sub-Coulomb a-transfer reactions or the beta-delayed a decay of N-16, but the latter approach is presently hampered by the lack of sufficiently precise data on the beta-decay branching ratios. Here we report improved branching ratios for the bound 1(-) level [b(beta,11) = (5.02 +/- 0.10) x 10(-2)] and for beta-delayed alpha emission [b(…

Structure of N >= 126 nuclei produced in fragmentation of (238)U

2009

The nuclear structure of neutron‐rich N⩾126 nuclei have been investigated following their production via relativistic projectile fragmentation of a E/A = 1 GeV 238U beam on a Be target. The cocktail of secondary beam products were separated and identified using the GSI FRagment Separator (FRS). The nuclei of interest were implanted in a high‐granularity active stopper detector set‐up consisting of 6 double sided silicon strip detectors. The associated gamma‐ray transitions were detected with the RISING array, consisting of 15 Euroball cluster Ge‐detectors. Time‐correlated gamma decays from individually identified nuclear species have been recorded, allowing the clean identification of isome…

Stability of solid T2 films

1990

Abstract Films of molecular tritium, physisorbed on a cold substrate, have been investigated by means of ellipsometry. A significant effect of the radioactive decay processes on the desorption kinetics and the low temperature stability of these films is not observed.

Evidence forX(3872)→ψ(2S)γinB±→X(3872)K±Decays and a Study ofB→cc¯γK

2009

In a search for B --> ccbar gamma K decays with the BaBar detector, where ccbar includes J/psi and psi(2S), and K includes K+, Ks, and K*(892), we find evidence for X(3872) --> J/psi gamma and X(3872) --> psi(2S) gamma with 3.6 sigma and 3.5 sigma significance, respectively. We measure the product of branching fractions BR(B+ --> X(3872) K+) x BR(X(3872) --> J/psi gamma) = (2.8 +/- 0.8(stat.) +/- 0.2(syst.)) x 10^(-6) and BR(B+ --> X(3872) K+) x BR(X(3872) --> psi(2S) gamma) = (9.9 +/- 2.9(stat.) +/- 0.6(syst.)) x 10^(-6).

Measurement of the DecayB−→D*0e−ν¯e

2008

Using 226 x 10(6) BB[overline] events recorded on the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC e(+)e(-) PEP-II storage rings, we reconstruct B(-) ---> D(*0)e(-)nu[overline](e) decays using the decay chain D(*0) --> D(0)pi(0) and D(0)-->K(-)pi(+). From the dependence of their differential rate on w, the dot product of the four velocities of B(-) and D(*0), and using the form factor description by Caprini et al. with the parameters F(1) and rhoA(1)(2), we obtain the results rhoA(1)(2) = 1.16+/-0.06+/-0.08, F(1)|V(cb)|=(35.9+/-0.6+/-1.4) x 10(-3), and B(B(-) --> D(*0)e(-)nu[overline](e))=(5.56+/-0.08+/-0.41)%.
