Decomposition Rate of Old Nest Material in Tree Holes

2011

Abstract. We experimentally tested whether old nest material could decompose fast enough to clear tree holes between the consecutive seasons. To mimic the nest material we filled litter-bags with either 1 g of cellulose, or with 0.5 g of dog moulted hair. In August 2009 we placed pairs of these bags in 23 tree holes used by breeding birds in a deciduous forest in SW Poland. For reference, we placed the same sets of bags in the litter, at 23 random sites in the forest. The bags were removed in March 2010. After seven months of exposure almost all cellulose (median 92%) and most of hair (median 57%) disappeared from bags in the holes. These values were as high as (for cellulose) or even highe…

Simultaneous pituitary–gonadal recrudescence in two Corsican populations of male blue tits with asynchronous breeding dates

2006

Animal populations living in geographically variable environments respond to different selection pressures. The adaptive character of the responses to environmental information determines the degree of synchrony of the breeding period with local optimal conditions. An example is provided by two populations of Mediterranean blue tits (Parus caeruleus) in Corsica, breeding in different habitats, with a 1-month difference in the onset of egg laying. This difference in the onset of lay is supposed to be adaptive because, although chicks from both populations are raised mostly on caterpillars, the timing of the appearance of caterpillars is earlier for populations of tits associated with deciduo…

The Treatment of Anterior Dental Trauma

2011

Anterior dental trauma is a common injury pattern of the dentoalveolar system in which appropriate first aid is important. When children and adolescents suffer an anterior dental trauma, the challenge is to preserve the tooth in this esthetically important area and minimize subsequent damage. Lack of treatment or improper treatment can lead to a lifelong need for dental care. There are many causes of anterior dental trauma. At the age of one and two years, it is mainly caused by falls when learning to walk. At preschool age, between two and six years, many such injuries are caused by falls resulting from lack of attention when engaging in physical play. The highest incidence of anterior den…

Periodontal changes during chronic benign granulocytopenia in childhood. A case report.

1975

The report describes two children with chronic benign granulocytopenia, suffering from gingivitis and marginal periodontitis in the deciduous dentition. The radicular areas of the attached gingiva were well delineated against the alveolar and papillary mucosa.

Prevalence of enamel defects in primary and permanent teeth in a group of schoolchildren from Granada (Spain)

2012

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the prevalence and presentations of developmental defects of the enamel (DDE) in the primary and permanent dentitions of a group of healthy schoolchildren residing in Granada (Spain). Study Design: A total of 1,414 healthy schoolchildren were examined using modified DDE criteria for recording enamel defects. Results: The prevalence of DDE of any type was 40.2% in primary dentition and 52% in permanent dentition (p<0.033). Of the 31,820 primary and permanent teeth examined in the study, 699 (4.1%) primary and 1,232 (8.3%) permanent teeth had some form of DDE. Diffuse opacity was the most common type of DDE observed in primary …

Forest fragmentation is associated with primary brood sex ratio in the treecreeper (Certhia familiaris).

2003

We studied the primary brood sex ratio of an old-growth forest passerine, the Eurasian treecreeper (Certhia familiaris), along a gradient of forest fragmentation. We found evidence that male nestlings were more costly to produce, since they suffered twofold higher nestling mortality and were larger in body size than females. Furthermore, the proportion of males in the brood was positively associated with the provisioning rate and the amount of food delivered to the nestlings. During the first broods, a high edge density and a high proportion of pine forests around the nests were related to a decreased production of males. The densities of spiders, the main food of the treecreeper, were 38% …

Primary double teeth. A retrospective clinical study of their morphological characteristics and associated anomalies

2000

Aim. To investigate the relationship between morphology and position of double teeth, and the occurrence of other dental anomalies in the same subjects and in their siblings. Sample of children and methods. Fifty-three double teeth in a group of 50 Spanish children were included in the study. All of these children were examined clinically and had radiographs and photographs taken at the time of examination. Twenty-two of the children had a total of 30 siblings who were also examined for the presence of anomalies. Results. Of the 50 subjects, 47 had one and three subjects had two double teeth. Statistically there were no significant differences in occurrence between boys and girls, left and …

Effect of cavity preparation instruments (oscillating or rotating) on the composite-dentin interface in primary teeth.

2003

Abstract Objectives: To evaluate the effect of preparation of instruments on the interfacial integrity between cavity wall and composite restoration. Methods: Two class II slot preparations were done in 10 primary teeth either with SonicSys® or with a conventional bur. The cavities were filled using an adhesive system. One layer of a flowable composite and one layer of a condensable composite were applied. The specimens were analyzed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Results: In the SonicSys® group the mean thickness of the hybrid layer was 6.12 (0.60) μm; in the control group it was 6.04 (0.63) μm. The difference was not statistically significant. Two fractures were observed in one to…

Mid- and late-Holocene vegetation and fire history at Biviere di Gela, a coastal lake in southern Sicily, Italy

2009

The vegetation and fire history of few coastal sites has been investigated in the Mediterranean region so far. We present the first paleoecological reconstruction from coastal Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. We analysed pollen and charcoal in the sediments of Biviere di Gela, a lake (lagoon) on the south coast of Sicily. Our data suggest that the area became afforested after a marine transgression at ca. 7200 cal b.p. (5250 b.c.). Build-up of forest and shrublands took ca. 200–300 years, mainly with the deciduous trees Quercus, Ostrya and Fraxinus. Juniperus expanded ca. 6900 cal b.p. (4950 b.c.), but declined again 6600 cal b.p. (4650 b.c.). Afterwards, evergreen trees…

Abrupt vegetation changes in the Segura Mountains of southern Spain throughout the Holocene

2001

Summary 1 The fossil pollen record of Canada de la Cruz in the Segura mountains of southern Spain yields insights into high-elevation vegetational dynamics over the last c. 8320 years. Phases of xerophytic grassland alternate with high-mountain open pine forests and expansion of deciduous forests and Mediterranean scrub at lower altitudes. 2 Longer-term stable vegetation patterns are interrupted by multidecadal to century-scale shifts at about 7770, 3370, 2630, 1525 and 790 years BP. 3 Some of the vegetation types have no modern analogues and represent high-altitude remnants of widespread last-glacial xerophytic communities. Other species patterns, characteristic of current scrub associatio…
