An integrated framework for risk profiling of breast cancer patients following surgery.
2006
Objective: An integrated decision support framework is proposed for clinical oncologists making prognostic assessments of patients with operable breast cancer. The framework may be delivered over a web interface. It comprises a triangulation of prognostic modelling, visualisation of historical patient data and an explanatory facility to interpret risk group assignments using empirically derived Boolean rules expressed directly in clinical terms. Methods and materials: The prognostic inferences in the interface are validated in a multicentre longitudinal cohort study by modelling retrospective data from 917 patients recruited at Christie Hospital, Wilmslow between 1983 and 1989 and predictin…
On Obtaining Classification Confidence, Ranked Predictions and AUC with Tsetlin Machines
2020
Tsetlin machines (TMs) are a promising approach to machine learning that uses Tsetlin Automata to produce patterns in propositional logic, leading to binary (hard) classifications. In many applications, however, one needs to know the confidence of classifications, e.g. to facilitate risk management. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme for measuring TM confidence based on the logistic function, calculated from the propositional logic patterns that match the input. We then use this scheme to trade off precision against recall, producing area under receiver operating characteristic curves (AUC) for TMs. Empirically, using four real-world datasets, we show that AUC is a more sensitive meas…
Assessment of wastewater treatment plant design for small communities: Environmental and economic aspects
2012
The preliminary design and economic assessment of small wastewater treatment plants (less than 2000 population equivalent) are issues of particular interest since wastewaters from most of these agglomerations are not covered yet. This work aims to assess nine different technologies set-up for the secondary treatment in such type of facilities embracing both economic and environmental parameters. The main novelty of this work is the combination of an innovative environmental decision support system (EDSS) with a pioneer approach based on the inclusion of the environmental benefits derived from wastewater treatment. The integration of methodologies based on cost-benefit analysis tools with th…
A decision support system to assure high-performance maintenance service
2020
PurposeThis study aims to propose a decision support system (DSS) for maintenance management of a service system, namely, a street cleaning service vehicle. Referring to the information flow management, the blockchain technology is integrated in the proposed DSS to assure data transparency and security.Design/methodology/approachThe DSS is designed to efficiently handle the data acquired by the network of sensors installed on selected system components and to support the maintenance management. The DSS supports the decision makers to select a subset of indicators (KPIs) by means of the DEcision-MAaking Trial and Evaluation Laboratory method and to monitor the efficiency of performed prevent…
Cultivating the Installed Base: The Introduction of e-Prescription in Greece
2017
In this chapter we explore the surprisingly swift deployment of a national e-prescription service in Greece. We position e-prescribing within the overall Greek health system and we describe how the new electronic service evolved to inscribe specific prescribing policies, to provide clinical decision support and to facilitate the processes and roles of policy and financing stakeholders. We identify how a series of pragmatic decisions allowed building upon a “good-enough” installed base by exploiting its latent potential without perpetuating all of its weaknesses, and by being responsive to exogenous shifts. These tactical decisions, were supported by a favourable and enabling combination of …
Intelligent Energy Management System
2009
Energy management is nowadays a subject of great importance and complexity. It consists in choosing among a set of sources able to produce energy that will give energy to a set of loads by minimising losses and costs. The sources and loads are heterogeneous, distributed and the reaction of the system, the choice of sources, must be done in real-time to avoid power outage. The goal of this paper is to present a system able to self-regulate a heterogeneous set of power sources and loads organised as a coherent group of entities that is called micro-grid, in order to optimize several criteria such as: cost and efficiency. This system is based upon the Multi-Agent Systems paradigm. Each micro-g…
SOFIA: a decision support System for the Optimization of the biomass supply chain and Forest Integrated management in protected areas
2019
A decision support System for the Optimization of the biomass supply chain and Forest Integrated Management in protected areas (SOFIA) is presented. All functionalities have been developed in Python language embedded in the open-source QGIS 3.6 software. Two models were implemented with an approach and methodology based on free and open source software (QGIS, GRASS, SAGA, GDAL). The main aim of SOFIA is to support the Madonie Regional Natural Park authority and forest managers in decision-making processes to assess the costs and benefits in the energy production from residual agro-forestry biomass, as well as for determining the optimum plant size (and power) for energy and heat production …
Mobility, Data, and Behavior: The TrafficO2 Case Study
2015
This chapter presents the social innovation project “TrafficO2”, a support system for decision-making in the field of transportation that tries to push commuters towards more sustainable mobility by providing concrete incentives for each responsible choice. After focusing on Palermo, Italy, the context of this case study, this chapter provides a detailed description of the TrafficO2 model. Specifically, the chapter deals with the analysis of a selected sample of users among Palermo University students who commute daily to their respective University departments on campus. Starting from the modal split of the actual situation (Status Quo scenario), another behavior scenario (Do your right mi…
Exploiting the Human Factor in a WSN-Based System for Ambient Intelligence
2009
Practical applications of ambient intelligence cannot leave aside requirements about ubiquity, scalability, and transparency to the user. An enabling technology to comply with this goal is represented by wireless sensor networks (WSNs); however, although capable of limited in-network processing, they lack the computational power to act as a comprehensive intelligent system. By taking inspiration from the sensory processing model of complex biological organisms, we propose here a cognitive architecture able to perceive, decide upon, and control the environment of which the system is part. WSNs act as a transparent interface that allows the system to understand human requirements through impl…
An Adaptive Bayesian System for Context-Aware Data Fusion in Smart Environments
2017
The adoption of multi-sensor data fusion techniques is essential to effectively merge and analyze heterogeneous data collected by multiple sensors, pervasively deployed in a smart environment. Existing literature leverages contextual information in the fusion process, to increase the accuracy of inference and hence decision making in a dynamically changing environment. In this paper, we propose a context-aware, self-optimizing, adaptive system for sensor data fusion, based on a three-tier architecture. Heterogeneous data collected by sensors at the lowest tier are combined by a dynamic Bayesian network at the intermediate tier, which also integrates contextual information to refine the infe…
