Efficient Multi-scale Patch-Based Segmentation

2015

The objective of this paper is to devise an efficient and accurate patch-based method for image segmentation. The method presented in this paper builds on the work of Wu et al. [14] with the introduction of a compact multi-scale feature representation and heuristics to speed up the process. A smaller patch representation along with hierarchical pruning allowed the inclusion of more prior knowledge, resulting in a more accurate segmentation. We also propose an intuitive way of optimizing the search strategy to find similar voxel, making the method computationally efficient. An additional approach at improving the speed was explored with the integration of our method with Optimised PatchMatch…

From the nearest neighbour rule to decision trees

1998

This paper proposes an algorithm to design a tree-like classifier whose result is equivalent to that achieved by the classical Nearest Neighbour rule. The procedure consists of a particular decomposition of a d-dimensional feature space into a set of convex regions with prototypes from just one class. Some experimental results over synthetic and real databases are provided in order to illustrate the applicability of the method.

A Comparative Study to Analyze the Performance of Advanced Pattern Recognition Algorithms for Multi-Class Classification

2021

This study aims to implement the following four advanced pattern recognition algorithms, such as “optimal Bayesian classifier,” “anti-Bayesian classifier,” “decision trees (DTs),” and “dependence trees (DepTs)” on both artificial and real datasets for multi-class classification. Then, we calculated the performance of individual algorithms on both real and artificial data for comparison. In Sect. 1, a brief introduction is given about the study. In the second section, the different types of datasets used in this study are discussed. In the third section, we compared the classification accuracies of Bayesian and anti-Bayesian methods for both the artificial and real-life datasets. In the four…

Proactive Handoff of Secondary User in Cognitive Radio Network Using Machine Learning Techniques

2021

Spectrum management always appears as an essential part of modern communication systems. Handoff is initiated when the signal strength of a current user deteriorates below a certain threshold. In cognitive radio network, the perception of handoff is different due to the presence of two categories of users: certified/primary user and uncertified/secondary user. The reason for the spectrum handoff arises when the primary user (PU) returns to one of its band used by the secondary user. The spectrum handoff is of two types: reactive handoff and proactive handoff. There are certain limitations in reactive handoff, such as it suffers from prolonged handoff latency and interference. In the proacti…

Local Feature Selection with Dynamic Integration of Classifiers

2000

Multidimensional data is often feature space heterogeneous so that individual features have unequal importance in different sub areas of the feature space. This motivates to search for a technique that provides a strategic splitting of the instance space being able to identify the best subset of features for each instance to be classified. Our technique applies the wrapper approach where a classification algorithm is used as an evaluation function to differentiate between different feature subsets. In order to make the feature selection local, we apply the recent technique for dynamic integration of classifiers. This allows to determine which classifier and which feature subset should be us…

Statistical classification and proportion estimation - an application to a macroinvertebrate image database

2010

We apply and compare a random Bayes forest classifier and three traditional classification methods to a dataset of complex benthic macroinvertebrate images of known taxonomical identity. Since in biomonitoring changes in benthic macroinvertebrate taxa proportions correspond to changes in water quality, their correct estimation is pivotal. As classification errors are passed on to the allocated proportions, we explore a correction method known as a confusion matrix correction. Classification methods were compared using the misclassification error and the χ2 distance measures of the true proportions to the allocated and to the corrected proportions. Using low misclassification error and small…

A Windowing strategy for Distributed Data Mining optimized through GPUs

2017

Abstract This paper introduces an optimized Windowing based strategy for inducing decision trees in Distributed Data Mining scenarios. Windowing consists in selecting a sample of the available training examples (the window) to induce a decision tree with an usual algorithm, e.g., J48; finding instances not covered by this tree (counter examples) in the remaining training examples, adding them to the window to induce a new tree; and repeating until a termination criterion is met. In this way, the number of training examples required to induce the tree is reduced considerably, while maintaining the expected accuracy levels; which is paid in terms of time performance. Our proposed enhancements…

Machine Learning for Modeling the Biomechanical Behavior of Human Soft Tissue

2016

An accurate modeling of the biomechanical properties of human soft tissue is crucial in many clinical applications, such as, radiotherapy administration or surgery. The finite element method (FEM) is the usual choice to carry out such modeling due to its high accuracy. However, FEM is computationally very costly, and hence, its application in real-time or even off-line with short delays are still challenges to overcome. This paper proposes a framework based on Machine Learning to learn FEM modeling, thus having a tool able to yield results that may be sufficiently fast for clinical applications. In particular, the use of ensembles of Decision Trees has shown its suitability in modeling the …

Evaluation of Ensemble Machine Learning Methods in Mobile Threat Detection

2017

The rapid growing trend of mobile devices continues to soar causing massive increase in cyber security threats. Most pervasive threats include ransom-ware, banking malware, premium SMS fraud. The solitary hackers use tailored techniques to avoid detection by the traditional antivirus. The emerging need is to detect these threats by any flow-based network solution. Therefore, we propose and evaluate a network based model which uses ensemble Machine Learning (ML) methods in order to identify the mobile threats, by analyzing the network flows of the malware communication. The ensemble ML methods not only protect over-fitting of the model but also cope with the issues related to the changing be…

The cost-effectiveness of neonatal versus prenatal screening for congenital toxoplasmosis

2019

BackgroundCongenital Toxoplasmosis (CT) can have severe consequences. France, Austria, and Slovenia have prenatal screening programs whereas some other countries are considering universal screening to reduce congenital transmission and severity of infection in children. The efficiency of such programs is debated increasingly as seroprevalence among pregnant women and incidence of congenital toxoplasmosis show a steady decrease. In addition, uncertainty remains regarding the effectiveness of pre- and postnatal treatments.MethodTo identify cost-effective strategies, prenatal and neonatal screenings were compared using a decision-analytic model based on French guidelines and current knowledge …
