Happiness by personality traits: the mediating role of decision-making tendencies
Background: Prior work has shown that happiness is associated with high levels of extroversion and low levels of neuroticism; whereas conscientiousness and agreeableness have also been found to be moderately associated with subjective well-being and happiness.Nevertheless, the reasons why personality traits are linked to subjective well-being remain poorly interpreted. As a consequence, the identification of mediating variables could be strategic for better understanding of the reasons for well-being. One promising avenue has been the focus on individuals’ tendencies in decision-making which may alter happiness levels. The relationships between well-being and maximizing vs. satisficing tend…
L’EFFETTO DEL SOVRACCARICO DI SCELTA. UN’INDAGINE SU BAMBINI, ADOLESCENTI, ADULTI, E ANZIANI
2014
The Decision Making Tendency Inventory: A new measure to assess maximizing, satisficing, and minimizing
2015
Abstract We introduce the Decision Making Tendency Inventory (DMTI), a new scale for measuring the decision-making tendencies to maximize, to satisfice, and to minimize. The scale has promising psychometric properties. Our findings show that the revealed tendencies are independent from each other and from the specific decision-making domain. Each factor is differently related to a set of indices of well-being and functioning, suggesting intriguing considerations regarding the distinctive characteristics of maximizing, satisficing, and minimizing. The DMTI extends previous research on maximizing and might contribute to explain the inconsistent results in the literature. Directions for future…
VALUE OF INFORMED CONSENT IN AESTHETIC DENTAL PROCEDURES
2020
In the last decade there have been an exponential increase in both the supply and demand for non invasive aesthetic procedures involving the face and the lips to contrast age changes in the perioral area. We briefly report the main non invasive aesthetics treatments in which dentists are involved and the professional liability related to the issues of informed consent. To avoid deontological and judiciary consequences the informed consent has to be obtained by the patient before any clinical procedure and documented in medical record. Recently Italian law no. 219/2017 highlighted the principle of autonomy and self-determination of patient and maximizes an optimal relationship between patien…
Democrazia e consultazione on line. Nuova edizione rivista e aggiornata
2023
Advanced Statistical Tools for Six Sigma and other Industrial Applications
Six Sigma is a methodological approach and philosophy for quality improvement in operations management; its main objectives are identifying and removing the causes of defects, and minimizing variability in manufacturing and business processes. To do so, Six Sigma combines managerial and statistical tools, with the creation of a dedicated organizational structure. In this doctoral thesis and the three years of study and research, we have had the purpose to advance the potential applications of the methodology and its tools; with a specific attention on issues and challenges that typically prevent the realization of the expected financial and operational gains that a company pursue in applyin…
Social decision making on technology and the environment in Spain
1999
Abstract This paper outlines the current status of the direct participation of citizens and public interest groups in decision making, on issues related to technology and the environment in the context of one specific country, namely Spain. It presents the kind of public participation possible today in Spain, where participatory management of technology is still relatively limited. The article analyzes the causes for the current situation, based on several recent case studies, as well as views expressed by key actors. The cases described, encompass a wide range of modern technologies, and include genetic engineering, environmental information, forestry management, and also the environmental…
Do coaching style and game circumstances predict athletes' perceived justice of their coach? A longitudinal study in elite handball and volleyball te…
2018
Objective: The present longitudinal study is the first to examine game to game fluctuations of perceived justice of elite volleyball and handball coaches. More specifically, we studied whether coaching style (i.e., need support versus control), coach behaviors (decision justifications), player’s status (i.e., starter or substitute), and game result (win/loss) predicted athletes’ perceived justice and its fluctuations. Methods: A longitudinal questionnaire study was performed during 6 consecutive weeks among Belgian female volleyball (N = 57) and male handball players (N = 39). We administered a general questionnaire (i.e., need support/control) the first week, and game-specific questionnair…
Modeling interactions between political parties and electors
2017
In this paper we extend some recent results on an operatorial approach to the description of alliances between political parties interacting among themselves and with a basin of electors. In particular, we propose and compare three different models, deducing the dynamics of their related {\em decision functions}, i.e. the attitude of each party to form or not an alliance. In the first model the interactions between each party and their electors are considered. We show that these interactions drive the decision functions towards certain asymptotic values depending on the electors only: this is the {\em perfect party}, which behaves following the electors' suggestions. The second model is an …
A dynamical approach to compatible and incompatible questions
2019
We propose a natural strategy to deal with compatible and incompatible binary questions, and with their time evolution. The strategy is based on the simplest, non-commutative, Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}=\mathbb{C}^2$, and on the (commuting or not) operators on it. As in ordinary Quantum Mechanics, the dynamics is driven by a suitable operator, the Hamiltonian of the system. We discuss a rather general situation, and analyse the resulting dynamics if the Hamiltonian is a simple Hermitian matrix.
