Triage assessment of registered nurses in the emergency department

2013

Standardised triage systems have been implemented in emergency departments (EDs) to improve the efficacy of assessment strategies as performed by registered nurses (RNs). However, the exact effect the standardised triage systems have on the decision-making process remains unclear.Aim: To evaluate decision making in the triage setting before and after implementation of the Medical Emergency Triage and Treatment System Adult in one hospital's ED.Methods: A descriptive intervention design with a quantitative approach. A total of 655 patients before and 413 patients after the intervention were included. A questionnaire was used to evaluate how the RNs assessed the patients before intervention w…

The joint structure–function dynamics of glaucoma progression

2015

While the presence and rate of glaucoma progression influence treatment decisions, the methods currently available to detect and monitor progression are imprecise and do not allow clinicians to make accurate assessments of the status of their patients. Models that focus on combining structural and functional parameters may improve our ability to detect and monitor glaucoma progression. Several of these models, however, are limited by their reliance on population statistics and on the static assumptions they make about the nature of glaucoma progression. Dynamic modeling of glaucoma progression may lead to a better understanding of glaucoma progression that could eventually translate into ma…

Towards constructing a Pareto front approximation for use in interactive forest management planning

2013

The selection of an appropriate multi-objective forest management plan can be a difficult task due to the vast number of alternatives available to the decision maker (DM). The complexity of the task depends e.g. on how clear the preferences of the DM are. For those DMs who do not have clear preferences, interactive methods of forest planning could assist in clarifying preferences and guiding the selection in an efficient fashion. Interactive planning methods are useful when the DM needs to consider a wide range of efficient solutions quickly. With large forest holdings or with complicated forest management goals, the development of new forest plans can become a rather computationally demand…

Comparison of decision variants with reference set (BIPOLAR method) in selection process of suppliers

2018

Bipolar is one of the Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) methods, proposed by Ewa Konarzewska-Gubała [6, 7, 8]. The essence of the analysis in the BIPOLAR method consists in a fact that alternatives are not compared directly to each other, but they are confronted to the two sets of reference objects: good and bad. Some alternatives can be evaluated as over good, i.e. better than at least one of desirable reference object or underbid, i.e. worse than at least of one nonacceptable object. Proposed method takes into account all stages of the decision-making process, starting with the selection of criteria and determining their weights, by modelling the preferences of decision-makers, o…

The Influence of Hedonic and Utilitarian Motivators on Likelihood to Buy a Tourism Package

2013

To fully understand the pattern of choice, it is important that any explanation of consumer behavior to be accompanied by a complete understanding of the interplay between a consumer’s functional goals and experiential preferences within the decision context. Consumer researchers have increasingly begun to investigate consumer choice based on distinctions that involve the purchase and consumption of goods for pleasure versus for more utilitarian and instrumental purposes. Consumers are often faced with these types of choices between hedonic and utilitarian alternatives that are at least partly driven by emotional desires rather than cold cognitive deliberations. This research approaches fac…

Interactive multiobjective optimization for finding the most preferred exercise therapy modality in knee osteoarthritis

2022

Abstract Background There are no explicit guidelines or tools available to support clinicians in selecting exercise therapy modalities according to the characteristics of individual patients despite the apparent need. Objective This study develops a methodology based on a novel multiobjective optimization model and examines its feasibility as a decision support tool to support healthcare professionals in comparing different modalities and identifying the most preferred one based on a patient’s needs. Methods Thirty-one exercise therapy modalities were considered from 21 randomized controlled trials. A novel interactive multiobjective optimization model was designed to characterize the effic…

Surrogate-assisted multicriteria optimization: Complexities, prospective solutions, and business case

2017

Complexity in solving real-world multicriteria optimization problems often stems from the fact that complex, expensive, and/or time-consuming simulation tools or physical experiments are used to evaluate solutions to a problem. In such settings, it is common to use efficient computational models, often known as surrogates or metamodels, to approximate the outcome (objective or constraint function value) of a simulation or physical experiment. The presence of multiple objective functions poses an additional layer of complexity for surrogate-assisted optimization. For example, complexities may relate to the appropriate selection of metamodels for the individual objective functions, extensive …
