A fuzzy decision support tool for demand forecasting
2007
In this paper we present a decision support forecasting system to work with univariate time series based on the generalized exponential smoothing (Holt-Winters) approach. It is conceived as an integrated tool which has been implemented in Visual Basic. For improving the accuracy of the automatic forecasting it uses an optimization-based scheme which unifies the stages of estimation of the parameters and selects the best method using a fuzzy multicriteria approach. The elements of the set of local minima of the non-linear programming problems allow us to build the membership functions of the conflicting objectives. A set of real data is analyzed to show the performance of our forecasting too…
INTACMATO: An IIMT-Prototype
2011
In the previous chapter, we pointed out that although users evaluate IIMT very positively, only a limited number of IIMT are offered. We assume that the main reason for this is that online sellers do not know which IIMT they should offer and what they should exactly look like. We address these two aspects in this chapter. Firstly, we review literature on IDA in the field of human interaction. We discuss several drawbacks of current approaches as well as the resulting requirements for the design of IIMT. Secondly, we break down observed decision-making behavior into typical steps decision makers apply in their decision processes. These steps indicate which IIMT would offer appropriate decisi…
Interactive MCDM Support System in the Internet
1998
NIMBUS is an interactive multiobjective optimization system. Among other things, it is capable of solving complicated real-world applications involving nondifferentiable and nonconvex functions. We describe an implementation of NIMBUS operating in the Internet, where the World- Wide Web (WWW) provides a graphical user interface. Different kind of visualizations of alternatives produced are available for aiding in the solution process.
Research on Application of Data Mining Methods to Diagnosing Gastric Cancer
2012
Constantly evolving technologies bring new possibilities for supporting decision making in different areas - finance, marketing, production, social area, healthcare and others. Decision support systems are widely used in medicine in developed countries and show positive results. This research reveals several possibilities of application of data mining methods to diagnosing gastric cancer, which is the fourth leading cancer type in incidence after the breast, lung and colorectal cancers. A simple decision support system model was introduced and tested using gastric cancer inquiry form statistical data. The obtained results reveal both the benefits and potential of application of DSS aimed to…
Decision-making in energy planning. Application of the Electre method at regional level for the diffusion of renewable energy technology
2003
The authors show an application of the multicriteria decision-making methodology used to assess an action plan for the diffusion of renewable energy technologies at regional scale. This methodological tool gives the decision-maker considerable help in the selection of the most suitable innovative technologies in the energy sector, according to preliminary fixed objectives. In this paper, a case study is carried out for the island of Sardinia. This region presents, on one hand, a high potential for energy resources exploitation, but on the other hand, it represents a specific case among other Italian regions, because of its socio-economic status and history. Three decision scenarios have bee…
Prediction of arrival times and human resources allocation for container terminal
2011
Increasing competition in the container shipping sector has meant that terminals are having to equip themselves with increasingly accurate analytical and governance tools. A transhipment terminal is an extremely complex system in terms of both organisation and management. Added to the uncertainty surrounding ships’ arrival time in port and the costs resulting from over-underestimation of resources is the large number of constraints and variables involved in port activities. Predicting ships delays in advance means that the relative demand for each shift can be determined with greater accuracy, and the basic resources then allocated to satisfy that demand. To this end, in this article we pro…
A decision support system to compare different strategies for achieving the Italian Kyoto Protocol commitment
2008
Abstract: In order to meet the Italian Kyoto Protocol commitment, in 2002 the Interministerial Committee for Economic Planning (CIPE) approved the national allocation plan for the reduction of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs), envisioning various alternative scenarios. In this paper an extended impact assessment of the plan is accomplished and some further options are conceived and analysed in order to find an optimal trade-off among the different economic, environmental and social items at stake. After the selection of a set of independent indicators, nine different scenarios for the GHG reductions were evaluated and they were sorted according to the principles of the multicriteria analysis. The re…
A Conversational Agent to Support Decisions in SimCity like Games
2009
Computational intelligent techniques applied to economics have played an important role in the last years. In this paper we propose a framework based on an intelligent conversational agent embedded with a decision support system, aimed at suggesting the best managing strategies for a game-based model of a virtual town. The agent tries to prospect the future evolutions of particular choices taken by the user. Interaction is conducted through a natural language interface built as an Alice-based conversational agent.
Decision support for centralizing cargo at a Moroccan airport hub using stochastic multicriteria acceptability analysis
2010
The geographical location of Morocco places it at the heart of important sea, air, rail and motorway transport routes between four continents. In this study we evaluate different alternatives to centralize multimodal cargo at a Moroccan airport hub. The choice depends on different socio-economical criteria, the geographical location, and the environmental impacts. Some of the criteria can be measured quantitatively, while for others only qualitative assessment is feasible. Furthermore, significant uncertainty is present in both the criteria measurements and the preferences. We aided this decision process using Stochastic Multicriteria Acceptability Analysis (SMAA). SMAA is a method that all…
Computer-assisted clinical diagnosis in the official European union languages
2016
eHealth services integrate Web Information Retrieval and Intelligent Medical Decision Support for health care professionals based on the range of possible symptoms which a patient reports. However, many symptoms like high temperature, fever, or headache, are ambiguous in terms of suggesting wide variety of possible patient's conditions to the GP, while other symptoms are mutually dependant, which again can be misleading to make an accurate diagnosis. On the other hand, doctor's up-to-date knowledge on the medicaments, drugs, active medical substances included, anticipated range of diseases relating to the symptoms reported, and the most reliable pharmaceutical manufacturers, are of the grea…
