Including the environmental criteria when selecting a wastewater treatment plant

2014

Abstract Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a methodology to generate environmental impact estimates associated with the life cycle stages of a product or process. The approach facilitates a more comprehensive outlook of the end-of-pipe process impacts, in which wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are included. Here we describe the implementation of the LCA methodology within a knowledge-based Decision support system (DSS) in order to include the environmental criteria to the decision making process when selecting the most appropriate process flow diagrams for specific scenarios. A sample group of 22 actual operating facilities in Spain, corresponding to five different typologies were assessed …

A multi-agent system for managing adverse weather situations on the road network

2010

The development of traffic management and control strategies to improve traffic flows and road safety is necessary due to the high dynamism of traffic flows. The use of distributed intelligent systems can help the traffic organizations and the road operators to cope with possible incidents on the road network, especially when the incidents are related to adverse meteorological conditions. In that case, the probability of road accidents is increased due to the difficulty of driving under bad weather conditions. So, if the operators detect any meteorological incident, they must decide how to deal with it in order to improve traffic safety. In this paper we introduce a new multiagent system (M…

Assessment of the technical and economic potential of offshore wind energy via a GIS application: A case study for the Sicily Region according to Ita…

2015

This paper presents a technical and economic analysis of the possible exploitation of offshore wind resources using spatial analysis methods based on GIS tools. The study assessed the magnitude and distribution of the main constraints on installation of wind farms by taking into account the relevant technical factors and local laws on nature protection issues in a specific area, i.e., Sicily. Specific cost functions were defined for several components of the total cost of construction and maintenance of a wind farm. Several scenarios were implemented according to wind turbine size, hub height, total wind farm power, and distance from the coast, and the levelised production cost was assessed…

Toward a New Plant-Wide Experimental and Modeling Approach for Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emission from Wastewater Treatment Plants

2019

Mechanisms causing greenhouse gas (GHG) emission in wastewater treatment plants are of great interest among researchers, encouraging the development of new methods for wastewater management. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) emit three major greenhouse gases during the treatment processes: CO2, CH4, and N2O. Additional amounts of CO2 and CH4 are produced during energy consumption, which can be considered an indirect source of GHGs. Recently, several efforts have been undertaken to assess GHGs from WWTPs, with particular attention paid to the N2O assessment due to its high warming potential (300 times stronger than CO2). This study proposes an integrated model platform for WWTP simulation,…

Modelling Inoculum Availability ofPlurivorosphaerella nawaein Persimmon Leaf Litter with Bayesian Beta Regression

2019

AbstractCircular leaf spot (CLS), caused byPlurivorosphaerella nawae, is a serious disease of persimmon (Diospyros kaki) inducing necrotic lesions on leaves, defoliation and fruit drop. Under Mediter-ranean conditions,P. nawaeforms pseudothecia in the leaf litter during winter and ascospores are released in spring infecting susceptible leaves. Persimmon growers are advised to apply fungicides for CLS control during the period of inoculum availability, which was defined based on ascospore counts under the microscope. A model of inoculum availability ofP. nawaewas developed and evaluated as an alternative to ascospore counts. Leaf litter samples were collected weekly in L’Alcúdia from 2010 to…

PA 05-3-0690 Mavie-lab sports: a mhealth for injury prevention and risk management in sport

2018

Computational advances in smart-phone technology and the development of expert systems has been an opportunity to devise the MAVIE-Lab an innovative Mobile Health Application (mHealth) for primary prevention of Home, Leisure and Sport Injuries (HLIs). Here, we present MAVIE-Lab Sports, the first module of the application focused on sports injuries. MAVIE-Lab was developed in the framework of the MAVIE project. A large web-based cohort launched with the objective of prospectively collecting data related to HLIs. A sample size of 26 000 volunteers have been already enrolled in this cohort and the ultimate goal is to recruit 1 00 000 participants in France. As a first step, the MAVIE-Lab will …

Using SMAA-2 method with dependent uncertainties for strategic forest planning

2006

Abstract Uncertainty included in forest variables is normally ignored in forest management planning. When the uncertainty is accounted for, it is typically assumed to be independently distributed for the criteria measurements of different alternatives. In forest management planning, the factors introducing the uncertainty can be classified into three main sources: the errors in the basic forestry data, the uncertainty of the (relative) future prices of timber, and the uncertainty in predicting the forest development. Due to the nature of these error sources, most of the involved uncertainties can be assumed to be positively correlated across the alternative management plans and/or criteria.…

Towards a Reduction of Greenhouse Gases: a New Decision Support System for Design, Management and Operation of Wastewater Treatment Plants

2015

The increasing attention for the environment has led to reduce the emissions from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Moreover, the increasing interest towards the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from WWTPs suggests to reconsider the traditional tools used for designing and managing WWTPs. Indeed, nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) can be emitted from wastewater treatment significantly contributing to the greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint. The reduction of energy consumption as well as GHG emission are of particular concern for large WWTPs which treat the majority of wastewater in terms of both volume and pollution load. Nowadays, there is an increasing need to develop…

A Decision Support System for Reverse Engineering Gene Regulatory Networks

2009

In this paper we present a knowledge-based system that aims at helping scientists in the reverse engineering process of gene regulatory networks. The main motivation of the proposed approach is to support scientists in the choice of the wide variety of algorithms and methods currently applied in the literature to infer Gene Regulatory Networks starting from gene expression measured using microarray technology. The Decision Support System (DSS) architecture is based on an ontology to model the knowledge base, a logical reasoner that builds the workflow of tasks to be done starting from the user’s request and a set of rules, and, finally, an agenda that runs the algorithms and software schedu…
