Determination of the atmospheric neutrino flux and searches for new physics with AMANDA-II

2009

The AMANDA-II detector, operating since 2000 in the deep ice at the geographic South Pole, has accumulated a large sample of atmospheric muon neutrinos in the 100 GeV to 10 TeV energy range. The zenith angle and energy distribution of these events can be used to search for various phenomenological signatures of quantum gravity in the neutrino sector, such as violation of Lorentz invariance (VLI) or quantum decoherence (QD). Analyzing a set of 5511 candidate neutrino events collected during 1387 days of livetime from 2000 to 2006, we find no evidence for such effects and set upper limits on VLI and QD parameters using a maximum likelihood method. Given the absence of evidence for new flavor-…

Quantum information processing on spin degrees of freedom in QDs placed in diluted magnetic semiconductor

2006

The spin degrees of freedom in quantum dot (QD) embedded in a diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) medium are considered in a model of a qubit and a gate for quantum information processing (QIP). The qubit is defined as a singlet and triplet pair of states of two electrons in a He-type QD in the DMS medium with strongly enhanced gyromagnetic factor. Methods of qubit rotation (Rabi oscillations) as well as two-qubit operations are suggested and analyzed. Moreover, decoherence related to spin waves (magnon-induced dephasing) in this new system (QD in DMS) is studied, and the relevant time-scale is estimated in accordance with preliminary experimental results. Anti-Zeno-based dynamical control of the unfolding of quantum Darwinism

2020

We combine the collisional picture for open system dynamics and the control of the rate of decoherence provided by the quantum (anti-)Zeno effect to illustrate the temporal unfolding of the redundant encoding of information into a multipartite environment that is at the basis of Quantum Darwinism, and to control it. The rate at which such encoding occurs can be enhanced or suppressed by tuning the dynamical conditions of system-environment interaction in a suitable and remarkably simple manner. This would help the design of a new generation of quantum experiments addressing the elusive phenomenology of Quantum Darwinism and thus its characterization.

Quantum Effects in Charged Particle Traps

2009

It is a fundamental feature of quantum mechanics that a group of particles can be in a state described by one common wavefunction which cannot be factored into individual particle wavefunctions; they are then said to be in an entangled state [294-296]. A measurement of the state of a constituent part of the entangled system determines the state of all the others. In a system that is not entangled, the states of the individual particles are determined independently. Ions isolated and trapped in vacuo in electromagnetic fields provide an unparalleled means of realizing long-lived entangled quantum states [297] through the coupling of the normal modes of oscillation in the trap by the long ran…

Singular Extremals for the Time-Optimal Control of Dissipative Spin 1/2 Particles

2010

We consider the time-optimal control by magnetic fields of a spin 1/2 particle in a dissipative environment. This system is used as an illustrative example to show the role of singular extremals in the control of quantum systems. We analyze a simple case where the control law is explicitly determined. We experimentally implement the optimal control using techniques of nuclear magnetic resonance. To our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of singular extremals in quantum systems with bounded control amplitudes.

Improving the coherence properties of solid-state spin ensembles via optimized dynamical decoupling

2016

In this work, we optimize a dynamical decoupling (DD) protocol to improve the spin coherence properties of a dense ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. Using liquid nitrogen-based cooling and DD microwave pulses, we increase the transverse coherence time T2 from ∼ 0.7 ms up to ∼ 30 ms. We extend previous work of single-axis (Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill) DD towards the preservation of arbitrary spin states. After performing a detailed analysis of pulse and detuning errors, we compare the performance of various DD protocols. We identify that the concatenated XY8 pulse sequences serves as the optimal control scheme for preserving an arbitrary spin state. Finally, we use the conc…

Quantum gate in the decoherence-free subspace of trapped ion qubits

2009

We propose a geometric phase gate in a decoherence-free subspace with trapped ions. The quantum information is encoded in the Zeeman sublevels of the ground-state and two physical qubits to make up one logical qubit with ultra long coherence time. Single- and two-qubit operations together with the transport and splitting of linear ion crystals allow for a robust and decoherence-free scalable quantum processor. For the ease of the phase gate realization we employ one Raman laser field on four ions simultaneously, i.e. no tight focus for addressing. The decoherence-free subspace is left neither during gate operations nor during the transport of quantum information.

Universal mechanism of spin relaxation in solids

2005

We consider relaxation of a rigid spin cluster in an elastic medium in the presence of the magnetic field. Universal simple expression for spin-phonon matrix elements due to local rotations of the lattice is derived. The equivalence of the lattice frame and the laboratory frame approaches is established. For spin Hamiltonians with strong uniaxial anisotropy the field dependence of the transition rates due to rotations is analytically calculated and its universality is demonstrated. The role of time reversal symmetry in spin-phonon transitions has been elucidated. The theory provides lower bound on the decoherence of any spin-based solid-state qubit.

Collective decoherence of cold atoms coupled to a Bose-Einstein condensate

2009

We examine the time evolution of cold atoms (impurities) interacting with an environment consisting of a degenerate bosonic quantum gas. The impurity atoms differ from the environment atoms, being of a different species. This allows one to superimpose two independent trapping potentials, each being effective only on one atomic kind, while transparent to the other. When the environment is homogeneous and the impurities are confined in a potential consisting of a set of double wells, the system can be described in terms of an effective spin-boson model, where the occupation of the left or right well of each site represents the two (pseudo)-spin states. The irreversible dynamics of such system…

Quasiparticles, coherence and nonlinearity: exact simulations of RF-spectroscopy of strongly interacting one-dimensional Fermi gases

2008

We consider RF-spectroscopy of ultracold Fermi gases by exact simulations of the many-body state and the coherent dynamics in one dimension. Deviations from the linear response sum rule result are found to suppress the pairing contribution to the RF line shifts. We compare the coherent rotation and quasiparticle descriptions of RF-spectroscopy which are analogous to NMR experiments in superfluid $^3$He and tunneling in solids, respectively. We suggest that RF-spectroscopy in ultracold gases provides an interesting crossover between these descriptions that could be used for studying decoherence in quantum measurement, in the context of many-body quantum states.
