Tensor decomposition of EEG signals: A brief review

2015

Electroencephalography (EEG) is one fundamental tool for functional brain imaging. EEG signals tend to be represented by a vector or a matrix to facilitate data processing and analysis with generally understood methodologies like time-series analysis, spectral analysis and matrix decomposition. Indeed, EEG signals are often naturally born with more than two modes of time and space, and they can be denoted by a multi-way array called as tensor. This review summarizes the current progress of tensor decomposition of EEG signals with three aspects. The first is about the existing modes and tensors of EEG signals. Second, two fundamental tensor decomposition models, canonical polyadic decomposit…

Three-dimensional numerical simulations on wind- and tide-induced currents: The case of Augusta Harbour (Italy)

2014

The hydrodynamic circulation in the coastal area of the Augusta Bay (Italy), located in the eastern part of Sicily, is analysed. Due to the heavy contamination generated by the several chemical and petrochemical industries active in the zone, the harbour was declared a Contaminated Site of National Interest. To mitigate the risks connected with the industrial activities located near the harbour, it is important to analyse the hydrodynamic circulation in the coastal area. To perform such analysis, a parallel 3D numerical model is used to solve the Reynolds-averaged momentum and mass balance, employing the k-e turbulence model for the Reynolds stresses. The numerical model is parallelized usi…

Benefits of the European Agri-Environment Schemes for Wintering Lapwings : A Case Study from Rice Fields in the Mediterranean Region

2020

Mediterranean European rice fields provide important habitats for migrating waterbirds. In winter. one waterbird species that particularly benefits from rice fields is the Northern Lapwing (VaneIlus vanellas), a species threatened in Europe. To assess the effect of agii-environmental measures on rice field selection and use by wintering lapwings, bird counts were conducted in northeastern Spain during two consecutive winters (2005-2006 and 2006-2007). Information on two mandatory post-harvest management prescriptions of the agri-environment schemes was collected, namely winter flooding (percent ground surface covered by water) and whether fields were rolled or not. The number of lapwings in…

Monolayer Formation of Molybdenum Carbonyl on Cu(111) Revealed by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Density Functional Theory

2012

International audience; Molybdenum carbonyl Mo(CO)(6) was adsorbed on the Cu(111) surface at 160 K in the monolayer coverage range and studied by scanning tunneling microscopy. A well-ordered monolayer of hexacarbonyl molecules was observed experimentally for the first time. The monolayer has a hexagonal structure compatible with a (root 7 x root 7)R19 superlattice on the copper (111) plane. The arrangement and orientation of the molecules on the surface were determined by density functional theory calculations, including van der Waals interactions. The comparison of adsorption and cohesive energies reveals that the molecule-substrate interaction is stronger than the intermolecular one, whi…

Two Remarkably Luminous Galaxy Candidates at z ≈ 10-12 Revealed by JWST

2022

The first few 100 Myr at z > 10 mark the last major uncharted epoch in the history of the universe, where only a single galaxy (GN-z11 at z ≈ 11) is currently spectroscopically confirmed. Here we present a search for luminous z > 10 galaxies with JWST/NIRCam photometry spanning ≈1–5 μm and covering 49 arcmin2 from the public JWST Early Release Science programs (CEERS and GLASS). Our most secure candidates are two MUV ≈ −21 systems: GLASS-z12 and GLASS-z10. These galaxies display abrupt ≳1.8 mag breaks in their spectral energy distributions (SEDs), consistent with complete absorption of flux bluewards of Lyα that is redshifted to =+z12.40.3 0.1and=+z10.40.5 0.4. A liquid alkoxide precursor for the atomic layer deposition of aluminum oxide films

2020

For large-scale atomic layer deposition (ALD) of alumina, the most commonly used alkyl precursor trimethylaluminum poses safety issues due to its pyrophoric nature. In this work, the authors have investigated a liquid alkoxide, aluminum tri-sec-butoxide (ATSB), as a precursor for ALD deposition of alumina. ATSB is thermally stable and the liquid nature facilitates handling in a bubbler and potentially enables liquid injection toward upscaling. Both thermal and plasma enhanced ALD processes are investigated in a vacuum type reactor by using water, oxygen plasma, and water plasma as coreactants. All processes achieved ALD deposition at a growth rate of 1-1.4 angstrom/cycle for substrate tempe…

Gas cell studies of thorium using filament dispensers at IGISOL

2020

Abstract Filament-based dispensers of thorium have been investigated at the IGISOL facility, Jyvaskyla, for potential use as a thorium ion source for future collinear laser spectroscopy experiments. Several different filaments were manufactured in the Institute of Atomic and Subatomic Physics of TU Wien, with 232Th and 229Th prepared on tantalum substrates either by drying thorium nitrate solution or via molecular plating, while adding a layer of zirconium for oxide reduction. The filaments were characterized in a helium-filled gas cell by performing selective and efficient in-gas-cell resonance laser ionization and by analyzing the resulting ion beams by mass spectrometry. Additionally, th…

Structure and Deformations of Pd−Ni Core−Shell Nanoparticles

2005

International audience; Homogeneous collections of Pd−Ni core−shell nanoparticles have been prepared by decomposition of metal−organic compounds and studied by several electron microscopy techniques: transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy-filtered microscopy (EFTEM), and by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The physical and chemical properties of the Pd shell are supposed to depend on its electronic properties, which are influenced by the presence of the Ni core and by the deformation in the Pd lattice. Here, the interfacial structure of Pd/Ni and the lattice deformations in t…

Exudate-based diabetic macular edema detection in fundus images using publicly available datasets

2010

International audience; Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a common vision threatening complication of diabetic retinopathy. In a large scale screening environment DME can be assessed by detecting exudates (a type of bright lesions) in fundus images. In this work, we introduce a new methodology for diagnosis of DME using a novel set of features based on colour, wavelet decomposition and automatic lesion segmentation. These features are employed to train a classifier able to automatically diagnose DME through the presence of exudation. We present a new publicly available dataset with ground-truth data containing 169 patients from various ethnic groups and levels of DME. This and other two publi…

Etude numérique d'équations aux dérivées partielles non linéaires et dispersives

2011

Numerical analysis becomes a powerful resource in the study of partial differential equations (PDEs), allowing to illustrate existing theorems and find conjectures. By using sophisticated methods, questions which seem inaccessible before, like rapid oscillations or blow-up of solutions can be addressed in an approached way. Rapid oscillations in solutions are observed in dispersive PDEs without dissipation where solutions of the corresponding PDEs without dispersion present shocks. To solve numerically these oscillations, the use of efficient methods without using artificial numerical dissipation is necessary, in particular in the study of PDEs in some dimensions, done in this work. As stud…
