Computing Strong Shocks in Ultrarelativistic Flows: A Robust Alternative

In recent years, shock capturing methods have started to be used in numerical simulations in Relativistic Fluid Dynamics (RFD). These techniques lead to explicit numerical codes that are able to successfully simulate the extreme conditions of the ultrarelativistic regime. After [2], an explicit, ready-to-use description of the full spectral decomposition of the Jacobian matrices of the RFD system is available, and this allows us to implement Marquina’s scheme [3] in RFD. The scheme is seen to maintain the good behavior shown in [3] with respect to certain numerical pathologies.

A Lagrange Multiplier Based Domain Decomposition Method for the Solution of a Wave Problem with Discontinuous Coefficients

In this paper we consider the numerical solution of a linear wave equation with discontinuous coefficients. We divide the computational domain into two subdomains and use explicit time difference scheme along with piecewise linear finite element approximations on semimatching grids. We apply boundary supported Lagrange multiplier method to match the solution on the interface between subdomains. The resulting system of linear equations of the “saddle-point” type is solved efficiently by a conjugate gradient method.

Detection of events by means of plane wave decomposition analysis and cross-correlation technniques using a circular array of microphones

[EN] This article deals with the study and analysis of room acoustics through a process of sound field decomposition sampled with microphones circular arrays. The spatial characteristics of the sound field inside a room can be meaningfully described by means of microphone array processing techniques. In this context, the set of impulse responses sampled by a microphone array can be seen as an image made of acoustic planewave footprints. A new implementation of the approximate coupled cluster singles and doubles CC2 linear response model using Cholesky decomposition of the two-electron integrals is presented. Significantly reducing storage demands and computational effort without sacrificing accuracy compared to the conventional model, the algorithm is well suited for large-scale applications. Extensive basis set convergence studies are presented for the static and frequency-dependent electric dipole polarizability of benzene and C60, and for the optical rotation of CNOFH2 and (−)-trans-cyclooctene (TCO). The origin-dependence of the optical rotation is calculated and shown to persist for CC2 even at basis set convergence. …

Abstract Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) scaffolds for tissue engineering were prepared via thermally induced phase separation of a ternary system PLLA/dioxane/tetrahydrofurane. An extension to solution of a previously developed method for solidification from the melt was adopted, the technique being based on a Continuous Cooling Transformation (CCT) approach, consisting in recording the thermal history of rapidly cooled samples and analysing the resulting morphology. Composite nanoparticles based on hyaluronic acid chemically cross-linked with alpha,beta-polyaspartylhydrazide.

In this paper, new composite nanoparticles based on hyaluronic acid (HA) chemically cross-linked with alpha,beta polyaspartylhydrazide (PAHy) were prepared by the use of a reversed-phase microemulsion technique. HA-PAHy nanoparticles were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, confirming the occurrence of the chemical cross-linking, dimensional analysis, and transmission electron micrography, showing a sub-micrometer size and spherical shape. Zeta potential measurements demonstrated the presence of HA on the nanoparticle surface. Role of intermediate species in the formation of ion tracks in PADC: A review

Abstract This review paper intends at identifying the early processes arising during the formation of a latent ion track in Poly Allyl Diglycol Carbonate (PADC). We briefly summarize the physical and chemical processes specific to the description of the interaction of ionizing radiation with matter. Morphology and thermal behavior of dicyanate ester-polyetherimide semi-IPNS cured at different conditions

A high-temperature thermosetting bisphenol-A dicyanate, BADCy was modified with polyetherimide, PEI, at various compositions. Phase separation and rheokinetics through curing were studied by optical microscopy, dynamic and isothermal differential scanning calorimetry, and rheological measurements. The PEI phase separated at the early stages of curing, well before gelation, and did not affect the polycyclotrimerization kinetics. Invariant pattern recognition based on 1-D Wavelet functions and the polynomial decomposition

Abstract A new filter, consisting of 1-D Wavelet functions is suggested for achieving optical invariant pattern recognition. The formed filter is actually a real function, hence, it is theoretically possible to be implemented under both spatially coherent and spatially incoherent illuminations. The filter is based on the polynomial expansion, and is constructed out of a scaled bank of filters multiplied by 1-D Wavelet weight functions. The obtained output is shown to be invariant to 2-D scaling even when different scaling factors are applied on the different axes. The computer simulations and the experimental results demonstrate the potential hidden in this technique.
