Translational repression and novel functions of Cth2 in the Saccharomyces cerevisiae response to iron deficiency
2020
Optimization of the Red Tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) Viscera Hydrolysis for Obtaining Iron-Binding Peptides and Evaluation of In Vitro Iron Bioavailabi…
2020
Iron deficiencies continue to cause significant health problems in vulnerable populations. A good strategy to combat mineral deficiency includes fortification with iron-binding peptides. This research aims to determine the optimal conditions to hydrolyze red tilapia viscera (RTV) using Alcalase 2.4 L and recovery of iron-binding protein hydrolysate. The result showed that under the optimal hydrolysis condition including pH 10, 60 °
Hypovitaminosis D, oral potentially malignant disorders, and oral squamous cell carcinoma: a systematic review
2021
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and potentially malignant oral disorders (OPMDs) could be associated with low levels of vitamin D. This systematic review aimed to determine the relationship between serum levels of vitamin D with OPMDs and OSCC. This review was conducted according to Cochrane guidelines (PROSPERO CRD42020207382) on literature retrieved from the PubMed, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases. The antecedents extracted were study design, methodology, sample (country, number of patients, age, and sex), oral manifestations (type of lesion, location, prevalence, and follow-up), serum vitamin D levels or use of vitamin D supplements, results, and conclusions. Twelve articles w…
The importance of association between sexsteroids deficiency, reduction of bone mineral density and falling risk in men with implications in medical …
2021
Introduction. Endocrino-metabolic rehabilitation represent one of the most complex sector in clinical medicine, regarding functional rehabilitation. Sex hormones deficiency plays an important role in the etiology of osteoporosis in men. At the same time, with age, the trophic role of androgens on muscle decreases and determines an increased frequency of falls. The objective of our study is to determine the association between sexsteroids deficiency, reduction of bone mineral density (BMD) and falling risk in men. Methods. Our retrospective cross-sectional study included 146 men aged between 65–85 years with low BMD (study group) and 121 men with normal BMD (control group). The measurement o…
Influence of sexual sensation seeking, sexual compulsivity and sexual pleasure in condom use among Spanish youth: implications for HIV interventions
2016
Spain is one of the countries with the highest incidence of HIV within the European Union. Multiple and complex factors influence HIV infection in young people. This study aims to determine the influence of sexual sensation seeking, sexual compulsivity and perceived sexual pleasure variables in condom use. A total of 424 heterosexual youth were evaluated (M age = 20.62; SD = 2.62) distributed into a risk group (60.7%) and a no-risk group (39.3%). Sexual Sensation Seeking Scale, AIDS Prevention Questionnaire, Sexual Compulsivity Scale, and Sexual Pleasure Perceived Scale were administered. Results indicate statistically significant differences in sexual sensation seeking (p=.001), failure to…
Proximal versus distal contextual factors: which impact on meal pleasure and food intake in the elderly living in a nursing home?
2014
Poster présenté lors de la conférence; Introduction: Several authors pointed out the importance of meal context on food intake in nursing home. Some authors assessed the impact of context improvement on food intake in nursing home, but they assessed ‘holistic’ strategies by improving physical environment, increasing choice level, changing staff organization… (Abbott et al. 2013). Despite some of these interventions were effective, these strategies are costly and thus difficult to be implemented in nursing home. The aim of the present experiment was to assess the impact of single contextual factors, three proximal factors (food contextual factors) and three distal factors (non-food contextua…
Intravenous iron therapy in patients with heart failure. A double-edged sword
2013
We read with interest the article of Beck-da-Silva et al., who recently concluded that intravenous (IV) iron seems to be superior over oral supplementation for improving functional capacity of heart failure patients [1]. Irrespective of the study design, involving comparison of functional outcomes between two different means of iron supplementation, we raise some clinical issues about the rationale underlying this investigation. According to the data published by Beck-da-Silva et al., the modest number of patients (n = 23) enrolled in this multicenter investigation had moderate anemia (i.e., hemoglobin concentration comprised between 90 and 120 g/L) but no evidence of iron deficiency, which…

Lipid-related thiamine deficiency cause mortality of river lampreys (Lampetra fluviatilis) during pre-spawning fasting
2023
Publisher Copyright: © 2023 The Authors River lampreys (Lampetra fluviatilis) were caught in the fall 2014 on entering the River Perhonjoki for spawning and kept at a hatchery until spawning in late spring 2015 to produce larvae for compensatory stockings. Since the lampreys died massively from early February onwards, they were investigated in March and May to clarify the cause of the deaths. The symptoms in lampreys resembled those of lipid-related thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency of salmonines, called the M74 syndrome in the Baltic Sea area. Because the lipid content of lampreys was known to be high, thiamine concentrations were analyzed in the liver and ovulated unfertilized eggs, and th…
