Numerical modelling of asymmetric boudinage
2002
Abstract Asymmetric boudinage structures are commonly used as shear sense indicators but their development is incompletely understood. This paper describes the influence of initial shape and kinematic parameters on the evolution of boudin trains using a numerical approach based on the finite difference code FLAC. Boudin trains are simulated as a series of competent objects embedded in a soft matrix subjected to general monoclinic ductile flow. Deformation of boudin trains includes heterogeneous stretching, rotation of boudins and offset along the neck regions. The sense of relative boudin offset is mainly influenced by the initial orientation of the interboudin plane in the boudinaging laye…
Electrooptic beam deflection with latex
1988
The use of latex in electrooptic devices is proposed. The static non linearity coefficient is shown to be approximatively 200 times the optical one. The theory of a beam deflector is developed and an explicit expression is given for the deflection angle versus the physical parameters of the sample Utilisation de suspensions aqueuses de latex dans un dispositif electro-optique. On montre que le coefficient statique de non-linearite devrait etre 200 fois plus eleve que le coefficient optique. Application a un deflecteur optique
On the moving load problem in beam structures equipped with tuned mass dampers
2017
This paper proposes an original and efficient approach to the moving load problem on Euler–Bernoulli beams, with Kelvin–Voigt viscoelastic translational supports and rotational joints, and in addition, equipped with Kelvin–Voigt viscoelastic tuned mass dampers (TMDs). While supports are taken as representative of external devices such as grounded dampers or in-span supports with flexibility and damping, the rotational joints may model rotational dampers or connections with flexibility and damping arising from imperfections or damage. The theory of generalised functions is used to treat the discontinuities of the response variables, which involves deriving exact complex eigenvalues and eigen…
Comportamento flessionale di nodi esterni in calcestruzzo fibrorinforzato
2010
A softened strut-and-tie macro model able to reproduce the flexural behavior of external beam-tocolumn joints with the presence of horizontal and vertical steel bars, including softening of compressed struts and yielding of main and secondary steel bars, is presented, to be used for the pushover analysis. The model proposed is able to calculate also the flexural response of fibrous reinforced concrete (FRC) beam-to-column sub-assemblages in term of a multilinear load-deflection curves. The model is able to take into account of the tensile behavior of main bars embedded in the surrounding concrete and of the softening of the compressed strut, the arrangement and percentage of the steel bars,…
A 2-D model of electrodialysis stacks including the effects of membrane deformation
2021
Abstract Membrane-based processes have gained a relevant role in many engineering applications. Much effort has been devoted to thoroughly understand the fundamental phenomena behind them. However, membrane deformation has been taken into consideration only recently, although much evidence has shown its impacts in many applications. This work presents a novel 2-D, multi-scale, semi-empirical process model able to predict the behavior and the performance of Electrodialysis (ED) systems in cross-flow configurations in the presence and absence of local membrane deformations. The model exploits the results and the simulation approaches of previous fluid-structure investigations performed by the…
Dynamic response of equivalent orthotropic plate model for stiffened plate: numerical-experimental assessment
2017
Abstract Over the last two decades, homogenization-based modeling techniques have attracted considerable attention. In fact, through these methods, structures such as corrugated or stiffened plates, commonly referred to as structurally orthotropic plates, can be approximately studied as equivalent flat plates with orthotropic behavior. Specifically, these homogenization techniques allow for the direct determination of the equivalent flexural and torsional rigidities which appear in the governing equation for the deflection of the equivalent orthotropic plate. It is worth noting that, the determined equivalent material properties retain the dependence on the geometric parameters of the origi…
Fluid-structure interaction in electromembrane processes: modelling of membrane deformation, fluid dynamics and mass transfer
2018
In recent years, water and energy supply issues have boosted a noticeable interest in the scientific community on electromembrane processes such as electrodialysis and reverse electrodialysis. In order to gain an important place in the industrial market, technological challenges on various aspects are involved for the optimization of these processes. In this context, profiled membranes exhibit interesting performances and offer countless geometric alternatives. However, the mechanical behavior of the membranes and its interaction with fluid dynamics has been poorly investigated so far. In membrane-based processes, a trans-membrane pressure (Ptm) between the different solutions flowing throu…

2018
In this work, we developed an advanced model useful for the design of profiled IEMs, based on the coupled simulation of local mechanical deformations and of fluid dynamics and associated mass transport phenomena within deformed channels
Integrated modelling of membrane deformation, fluid dynamics and mass transfer in electromembrane processes
In recent years, water and energy supply issues have drawn the attention of the scientific community to electromembrane processes. Electrodialysis (ED) and Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) are two of the most attractive electromembrane technologies for water desalination and electric energy production from salinity gradients, respectively. In order to gain an important place in the industrial market, technological challenges on various aspects are involved in the optimization of these processes. In this context, profiled membranes exhibit interesting performance. However, the mechanical behavior of the membranes and its interaction with fluid dynamics has been poorly investigated so far. In me…
Elements Design of the Equipment for the Closing of Shock Absorbers through the Rolling Method
2015
The objective of this paper is the design of some elements of equipment for the closing of shock absorbers through the rolling method with a wide range of tank tube lengths and also of the functional structure of the equipment with the shifting/settlement of the damper in the sertization process. Closing damper device is intended by the deflection of the upper reservoir tube. In the paper, the author present his concerns regarding the study and design (parts CAD, the crimping devices) of this equipment which use this proposed technology [1, 2] for the crimping rolling method for shock absorbers reservoir cylinders.
