A fuzzy framework to explain musical tuning in practice

2013

A theoretical tuning system is a set of pitches that can be used to play music. It is a fact that the human ear perceives notes with very close frequencies as if they were the same note. Therefore, in our approach a musical note and its pitch sensation are modeled as L-R fuzzy numbers with a modal interval and a bounded support. We pay particular attention to the 12-tone equal temperament (12-TET) for being the most widely used tuning system and we define the fuzzy 12-TET composed of 12 fuzzy notes. A similarity relation between a fuzzy note and a theoretical note can be defined, and subsequently a similarity class associated to each one of the fuzzy notes in the fuzzy 12-TET arises. Finall…

Fuzzy Classifier Based on Fuzzy Decision Tree

2007

A popular method for making a fuzzy decision tree for classification is Fuzzy ID3 algorithm. We introduce a new approach that uses cumulative information estimations of initial data. Based on these estimations we propose a new greedy version of fuzzy ID3 algorithm to be used to generate understandable fuzzy classification rules. The goal is to find a sequence of rules that causes near minimal classification costs.

An Approach to the Concept of Soft Fuzzy Proximity

2014

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of soft fuzzy proximity. Firstly, we give the definitions of soft fuzzy proximity and Katsaras soft fuzzy proximity, and also we investigate the relations between the soft fuzzy proximity and slightly modified version of Katsaras soft fuzzy proximity. Secondly, we induce a soft fuzzy topology from a given soft fuzzy proximity by using soft fuzzy closure operator. Then, we obtain the initial soft fuzzy proximity from a given family of soft fuzzy proximities. So, we describe products in the category of soft fuzzy proximities. Finally, we show that a family of all soft fuzzy proximities on a given set constitutes a complete lattice.

Different averages of a fuzzy set with an application to vessel segmentation

2005

Image segmentation is a major problem in image processing, particularly in medical image analysis. A great number of segmentation procedures produce intermediate gray-scale images that can be understood as fuzzy sets. Additionally, some segmentation procedures tend to leave free tuning parameters (very influential in the final binary image) for the user. These different binary images can be easily aggregated (into a fuzzy set) by making use of fuzzy set theory. In any case, a single binary image is required so our interest is to associate a crisp set to a given fuzzy set in an intelligent and unsupervised manner. The main idea of this paper is to define the averages of a given fuzzy set by …

Fuzzy C-Means Inspired Free Form Deformation Technique for Registration

2009

This paper presents a novel method aimed to free form deformation function approximation for purpose of image registration. The method is currently feature-based. The algorithm is inspired to concepts derived from Fuzzy C-means clustering technique such as membership degree and cluster centroids. After algorithm explanation, tests and relative results obtained are presented and discussed. Finally, considerations on future improvements are elucidated.

Fuzzy Discrete Event Simulation for Fuzzy Production Systems Analysis

1998

Abstract Fuzzy production systems are characterised by vagueness in data and requirements that very often cannot be reduced to stochastic models. Therefore, such production systems cannot be analysed by using classical techniques such as Queue Theory or Discrete Simulation Analysis. On the other hand the great diffusion of Fuzzy Production environments in small and medium enterprises claims for the development of new analysis tools. This paper proposes a new approach to Discrete Event Simulation able to treat with fuzzy variables. A new methodology has been proposed to process fuzzy information within discrete event simulation and a prototype of a Fuzzy Discrete Event Simulator has been dev…

The facility layout problem approached using a fuzzy model and a genetic search

2005

The problem of facility layout design is discussed, taking into account the uncertainty of production scenarios and the finite production capacity of the departments. The uncertain production demand is modelled by a fuzzy number, and constrained arithmetic operators are used in order to calculate the fuzzy material handling costs. By using a ranking criterion, the layout that represents the minimum fuzzy cost is selected. A flexible bay structure is adopted as a physical model of the system while an effective genetic algorithm is implemented to search for a near optimal solution in a fuzzy contest. Constraints on the aspect ratio of the departments are taken into account using a penalty fun…

Fuzzy expected utility

1984

Decision making under uncertainty requires not only measures of the uncertainty of situations that we try to recognize , but also an estimate of the imprecision from which they are determined. This imprecision can be the result either of a lack of exactness in the measure of the elements which are necessary to the determination of the states of nature or the purely subjective interpretation of these states. Through a subjective measure of the non-measurable imprecision, the purpose of the fuzzy expected utility, which is investigated, is to translate with a great accuracy the imprecise behaviour of the decision-maker in an uncertain world. Consequently we propose to introduce first the prob…

The fuzzy p-median problem

2004

In many location models, the strong crisp assumptions, like known demands and distances, are not realistic in most cases. The fuzzy p-median problem relaxes this hypothesis giving to the decision maker a necessary degree of freedom to solve real-world problems. It allows a decision maker to improve an optimal covering of a location problem by considering partially feasible solutions in which some demand is left uncovered. Here we revise the main facts and results about this problem emphasising different specific algorithms of resolution. Finally we show that this fuzzy version can be used to analyse the global structure of a given instance of the crisp problem.

Soft-computing based heuristics for location on networks: The p-median problem

2011

We propose a genetic algorithm for the fuzzy p-median problem in which the optimal transport cost of the associated crisp problem is unknown. Our algorithm works with two populations: in one, the solutions with a better crisp transport cost are favored by the selection criterion, whereas in the second one, solutions with a better fuzzy satisfaction level are preferred. These populations are not independent. On the contrary, the first one periodically invades the second one, thus providing new starting points for finding fuzzy improvements. Our computational results also reveal the importance of choosing adequate functions for selecting the parents. Our best results are obtained with functio…
