An Extended Kalman Filter-Based Technique for On-Line Identification of Unmanned Aerial System Parameters

2015

ABSTRACT: The present article deals with the identification, at the same time, of aircraft stability and control parameters taking into account dynamic damping derivatives. Such derivatives, due to the rate of change of the angle of attack, are usually neglected. So the damping characteristics of aircraft dynamics are attributed only on pitch rate derivatives. To cope with the dynamic effects of these derivatives, authors developed devoted procedures to estimate them. In the present paper, a complete model of aerodynamic coefficients has been tuned-up to identify simultaneously the whole set of derivatives. Besides, in spite of the employed reduced order model and/or decoupled dynamics, a s…

Algebras of unbounded operators and physical applications: a survey

2009

After a historical introduction on the standard algebraic approach to quantum mechanics of large systems we review the basic mathematical aspects of the algebras of unbounded operators. After that we discuss in some details their relevance in physical applications.

Physical applications of algebras of unbounded operators

2007

During the past 20 years a long series of papers concerning algebras of unbounded operators appeared in the literature, papers which, though being originally motivated by physical arguments, contain almost no physics at all. On the contrary the mathematical aspects of these algebras have been analyzed in many details and this analysis produced, up to now, the monographes [32] and [2]. Some physics appeared first in [28] and [31], in the attempt to describe systems with a very large (1024) number of degrees of freedom, following some general ideas originally proposed in the famous Haag and Kastler’s paper, [27], on QM∞.

New Twists of 3D Chiral Metamaterials

2018

Rationally designed artificial materials, called metamaterials, allow for tailoring effective material properties beyond ("meta") the properties of their bulk ingredient materials. This statement is especially true for chiral metamaterials, as unlocking certain degrees of freedom necessarily requires broken centrosymmetry. While the field of chiral electromagnetic/optical metamaterials has become rather mature, the field of elastic/mechanical metamaterials is just emerging and wide open. This research news reviews recent theoretical and experimental progress concerning 3D chiral mechanical and optical metamaterials, with special emphasis on work performed at KIT.

Retrieval of atmospheric CH4profiles from Fourier transform infrared data using dimension reduction and MCMC

2016

We introduce an inversion method that uses dimension reduction for the retrieval of atmospheric methane (CH4) profiles. Uncertainty analysis is performed using the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) statistical estimation. These techniques are used to retrieve CH4 profiles from the ground-based spectral measurements by the Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) instrument at Sodankyla (67.4 degrees N, 26.6 degrees E), Northern Finland. The Sodankyla FTS is part of the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON), a global network that observes solar spectra in near-infrared wavelengths. The high spectral resolution of the data provides approximately 3 degrees of freedom about the vertical struc…

Modeling of biomolecular machines in non-equilibrium steady states

2021

Numerical computations have become a pillar of all modern quantitative sciences. Any computation involves modeling--even if often this step is not made explicit--and any model has to neglect details while still being physically accurate. Equilibrium statistical mechanics guides both the development of models and numerical methods for dynamics obeying detailed balance. For systems driven away from thermal equilibrium such a universal theoretical framework is missing. For a restricted class of driven systems governed by Markov dynamics and local detailed balance, stochastic thermodynamics has evolved to fill this gap and to provide fundamental constraints and guiding principles. The next step…

Improving the QM/MM Description of Chemical Processes:  A Dual Level Strategy To Explore the Potential Energy Surface in Very Large Systems.

2005

Potential energy surfaces are fundamental tools for the analysis of reaction mechanisms. The accuracy of these surfaces for reactions in very large systems is often limited by the size of the system even if hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) strategies are employed. The large number of degrees of freedom of the system requires hundreds or even thousands of optimization steps to reach convergence. Reactions in condensed media (such as enzymes or solutions) are thus usually restricted to be analyzed using low level quantum mechanical methods, thus introducing a source of error in the description of the QM region. In this paper, an alternative method is proposed, coupled to t…

Modelling of thermo-chemical properties over the sub-solidus MgO–FeO binary, as a function of iron spin configuration, composition and temperature

2014

Thermo-chemical properties and T–X phase relations diagram of the (Mg,Fe)O solid solution are modelled using mixing Helmholtz energy, ΔF(T,x)mixing, calculated by quantum mechanical and semi-empirical techniques. The sub-solidus MgO–FeO binary has been explored as a function of composition, with iron either in high-spin (HS) or low-spin (LS) configuration. Only the HS model provides physically sound results at room pressure, yielding a correct trend of cell edge versus composition, whereas LS’s issues are at variance with observations. Mixing Helmholtz energy has been parametrized by the following relationship: ΔF(T,x)mixing = x × y × [U0(T) + U1(T) × (x – y) + U2(T) × (x − y)2]−T × S(x,y)c…

Chiral dynamics in the γ→p→pπ0 reaction

2015

Abstract We investigate the neutral pion photoproduction on the proton near threshold in covariant chiral perturbation theory with the explicit inclusion of Δ degrees of freedom. This channel is specially sensitive to chiral dynamics and the advent of very precise data from the Mainz microtron has shown the limits of the convergence of the chiral series for both the heavy baryon and the covariant approaches. We show that the inclusion of the Δ resonance substantially improves the convergence leading to a good agreement with data for a wider range of energies.
