P-Delta effect in structural optimization
2010
The present paper is devoted to the optimal design of structures constituted by elastic perfectly plastic material. In particular, reference will be made to the minimum volume design of multi-storey steel frames taking into account the P-Delta effect. For the sake of generality, the structure is thought as discretized into compatible finite elements and subjected to fixed and quasi-statically acting (wind) loads as well as to dynamic (seismic) loads. The effects of the dynamic actions are studied by utilizing a classical modal technique. The relevant optimal design problem is formulated on the grounds of a statical approach and different resistance limits are considered: in particular, it i…
Introducing Pseudo-Singularity Points for Efficient Fingerprints Classification and Recognition
2010
Fingerprint classification and matching are two key issues in automatic fingerprint recognition. Generally, fingerprint recognition is based on a set of relevant local characteristics, such as ridge ending and bifurcation (minutiae). Fingerprint classification is based on fingerprint global features, such as core and delta singularity points. Unfortunately, singularity points are not always present in a fingerprint image: the acquisition process is not ideal, so that the fingerprint is broken, or the fingerprint belongs to the arch class. In the above cases, pseudo-singularity-points will be detected and extracted to make possible fingerprint classification and matching. As result, fingerpr…

A New Model for Sigma-Delta Modulator Oriented to Digitally Controlled DC/DC Converter
2007
Recent research activities have shown the feasibility and advantages of using digital controller ICs specifically developed for high-frequency switching converters, highlighting a challenging future trend in Switched-mode power supplies (SMPS) applications. Up to a few years ago, the application of digital control for SMPS was impractical due to the high cost and low performance of DSP and microcontroller systems, even if the advantages that digital controllers offer were well known, such as immunity to analog component variations and ability to implement sophisticated control schemes and system diagnostics. Digital controller ICs potentially offer other advantages from the integrated desig…
