A Northern “Ode on Melancholy”?: The Music of Joy Division

Even decades after its sudden demise, Joy Division indisputably remains one of the most seminal proponents of post-punk. This chapter aims to examine Joy Division in relation to both Romanticism and the Gothic. The former manifests itself on two different, yet interrelated levels: first in terms of the Romantic “mythos of the doomed young artist” against the backdrop of industrial Manchester, and then as it is understood through the lenses of Ian Curtis’s persona and Anton Corbijn’s biopic Control, both of which are shown to establish Joy Divison’s music as Gothic texts.

First-trimester reversed end-diastolic flow in the umbilical artery is not always an ominous sign

We report five cases of first-trimester reversed end-diastolic flow in the umbilical artery. Diagnoses were performed between 8 and 12 gestational weeks. All but one case appeared as a transient early finding. Second-trimester fetal demise occurred in two cases. One case delivered at 32 weeks with severe growth restriction but recovered well. The other two cases had a good pregnancy outcome. Our experience suggests that this early Doppler finding is not always an ominous sign.

The island of Sicily, Italy, and its main city, Palermo, appear an ideal scenario for sustainable food provisioning: the former being the first region in Italy for organically cultivated land, the latter Italy's fifth largest city. This article explores ideals and practices of sustainable urban food systems through an example of environmental consumer activism in Palermo. It does this by narrating the story of an organic farmers' market created by citizens and producers. Along with other cultural organizations, newspapers, through waves of digital disruption, have become subject to a dominant narrative of crisis. But newspapers have long participated in change. A constructivist approach, qualified by consideration of media materiality, draws attention to diverse but essential processes of innovation around them.
