The essay proposes a comparison between the interpretations of the Risorgimento by Augusto Del Noce and Vittorio Frosini. Concepts of particular importance are the encounter between Catholicism and the liberal spirit or the juxtaposition …

On the distribution of education and democracy

2006

This paper empirically analyzes the influence of the distribution of education on democracy by controlling for unobservable heterogeneity and by taking into account the persistency of some of the variables. The most novel finding is that increase in the education attained by the majority of the population is what matters for the implementation and sustainability of democracy, rather than the average years of schooling. We show this result is robust to issues pertaining omitted variables, outliers, sample selection, or a narrow definition of the variables used to measure democracy.

Harnessing ICT to develop community and identity: a model for academic departments

2006

Universities have been early adopters of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). However, does availability imply use? How is ICT being used by academic departments? This article addresses these questions, and discusses the use of ICT to support research, instruction and service, but more specifically, the use of ICT to enhance a sense of identity and community across all members of a department. The authors' observations of university departments across the Atlantic reveal very limited uses of ICT. A democratic web-based academic departmental community model is proposed to assist in the strengthening of departmental identity and community as well as advancing its mission. Concept…

2021

The well known judgment of the German Constitutional Court in the “Weiss” case has been widely criticized under EU law, mainly because of its being in contrast with a preliminary ruling rendered by the European Court of Justice in 2018. At variance with these criticisms, it is here submitted that such a judgment brings well into focus some institutional ambiguities of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU); namely, the powers (more and more) exercised by the European Central Bank (ECB) in the field of macroeconomic regulation and control, in spite of (its) not being provided with political legitimacy. Seen in this perspective, the “Karlsruhe” judgment objectively looks as aimed at restoring …

Crisi dell'età dei diritti?

2013

The paper discusses various criticisms that are frequently leveled against the so-called “age of rights” – i.e., the contemporary legal and political doctrine that places funda-mental rights at the center of legal and political discourse, and that shapes legal institu-tions accordingly (written, rigid constitution, judicial review of legislation, etc.). After providing a definition of the main features of the age of rights, the author discusses and tries to rebut the principal critical stances on this topic, mainly by making use of the theoretical tools deployed by contemporary analytical jurisprudence on legal rights and legal reasoning.
