The Construction of Collective Memory: from Franco to Democracy

Collective memory is neither spontaneous nor random, but the result of a series of selective practices. It establishes group identity and sets power relations between groups. The author considers the process of selection through a case study of the transformation of Franco’s regime in Spain into a democracy. Collective memory of the time is shown to be organized around an event (the Munich Coalition or contubernio) and around the democratic transition. The following paper documents the use of political artistic performances as an instrument to strengthen the links between democracy and education. This study has been carried out with 45 students enrolled in the course of Didactics of Physical Expressive Activities of the Primary Education Teacher's Degree. To document the proposal we have followed a qualitative methodology. The results show how artistic performances contribute to the process of political subjectivation of future teachers insofar as they are able to use educational institutions to claim a more plural idea of corporality. From 1931 onward, Fascist Italy tried to influence Spanish politics through a combination of formal diplomatic action and clandestine support for monarchist conspirators. Spain did not, however, become an axis of Italy's foreign affairs until the outbreak of the Civil War in 1936. Abstract This study aims at understanding how the master narratives conveyed by the national accounts given by 14 to 18-year-old Spanish and Portuguese students converge or differ from one another and how they relate to national identity and temporal orientation. Data analysis was carried out in a qualitative approach inspired by Grounded Theory.
