The Loss of Grammatical Gender and Case Features Between Old and Early Middle English: Its Impact on Simple Demonstratives and Topic Shift

AbstractIn this paper we examine the relation between the loss of formal gender and Case features on simple demonstratives and the topic shifting property they manifest. The examination period spans between Old English and Early Middle English. While we argue that this loss has important discourse-pragmatic and derivational effects on demonstratives, we also employ the Strong Minimalist Hypothesis approach (Chomsky 2001) and feature valuation, as defined in Pesetsky & Torrego (2007), to display how their syntactic computation and pragmatic properties have come about. Abstract This article discusses the application of the Avicennan theory of demonstrative science on taṣawwuf, or the Divine Science (al-ʿilm al-ilāhī), by members of the Akbarian tradition, particularly Ibn ʿArabī’s (d. 1240) stepson and most influential disciple, Ṣadr al-Dīn al-Qūnawī (d. 1274), and his commentators, among whom the most prominent was Mullā Muḥammad b. Ḥamza al-Fanārī (d. 1431). This paper sets out to analyse the development of demonstrative adverbs of place in Catalan and Spanish. This article offers a critical review of the Spanish pronominal system (personal, possessive and demonstrative pronouns) as described in Nebrija's works and in those of the 16th and 17th century grammarians. These texts show that the history of grammatics is frequently a history of errors. In fact, the methodology conveniences they chose to establish regular models, led grammarians to false the reality of the language. Microvariation in the Distribution of Resumptive Pronouns in the Left Dislocation Construction in Two Tyrolean Dialects of Northern Italy

In this paper we document a so-far neglected case of microvariation involving resumptive pronouns in the left-dislocation construction in Meranese, spoken in South Tyrol, and Mòcheno, spoken in the Fersina valley (Trentino). While in standard German resumptive elements in this construction belong to the class of D-pronouns, the two Tyrolean dialects considered in the paper exhibit, as resumptive pronouns, both (i) D-pronouns and (ii) pronominal usages of the distal demonstrative formed by the definite article (D) and sèll corresponding to ‘that one’. La contextualisation de la description des formes du pronom de 3e personne en francais montre que celles-ci constituent un systeme composite representant un patchwork caracterise par l’utilisation d’elements empruntes a diverses categories grammaticales et par une tres grande asymetrie interne. La description habituelle des manuels de grammaire ne permet pas aux apprenants FLE d’apprehender la logique interne du systeme. Pourtant, les parametres selon lesquels les formes varient peuvent etre facilement identifies et decrits, et il est possible de fournir a l’apprenant un ensemble de regles precises grâce auxquelles il peut choisir la forme adequate du pronom.
