Understanding the Excited State Behavior of Cyclometalated Bis(tridentate)ruthenium(II) Complexes: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study

2015

The synthesis and characterization of the donor-acceptor substituted cyclometalated ruthenium(II) polypyridine complex isomers [Ru(dpb-NHCOMe)(tpy-COOEt)](PF6) 1(PF6) and [Ru(dpb-COOEt)(tpy-NHCOMe)](PF6) 2(PF6) (dpbH = 1,3-dipyridin-2-ylbenzene, tpy = 2,2';6,2"-terpyridine) with inverted functional group pattern are described. A combination of resonance Raman spectroscopic and computational techniques shows that all intense visible range absorption bands arise from mixed Ru → tpy/Ru → dpb metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excitations. 2(PF6) is weakly phosphorescent at room temperature in fluid solution and strongly emissive at 77 K in solid butyronitrile matrix, which is typical for r…

Novel meso-substituted porphyrins: Synthesis, characterization and photocatalytic activity of their TiO2-based composites

2009

Abstract Two series of novel meso-substituted porphyrins, namely 5,10,15,20-tetra[4-(3-phenoxy)-propoxy]phenyl porphyrin, the structural analogue 5,10,15,20-tetra[2-(3-phenoxy)-propoxy]phenyl porphyrin and their Co(II) Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes were synthesized. The compounds were characterized using various spectroscopic techniques and their molecular structure was proposed based on density functional theory calculations. The diverse properties of the porphyrin derivatives result from the different stereochemistry of the particular substituents at the meso site on the macrocycle and are controlled also by the coordinated metal. The 1H NMR spectrum of the free-base porphyrin showed a comp…

Modelling of defects and surfaces in perovskite ferroelectrics

2003

The results of electronic structure calculations for different terminations of SrTiO 3 (100) and (110) perovskite thin films are discussed. These calculations are based on the ab initio Hartree-Fock (HF) method and Density Functional Theory (DFT). Results are compared with previous ab initio plane-wave LDA and classical Shell Model (SM) calculations. Calculated considerable increase of the Ti-O chemical bond covalency nearby the surface is confirmed by experimental data. Our quantum chemical calculations performed by means of the intermediate neglect of differential overlap (INDO) method confirm the existence of self-trapped electrons in KNbO 3 , KTaO 3 and BaTiO 3 crystals. The relevant la…

Multiconfigurational second-order perturbation study of the decomposition of the radical anion of nitromethane

2004

The doublet potential energy surfaces involved in the decomposition of the nitromethane radical anion (CH(3)NO(2) (-)) have been studied by using the multistate extension of the multiconfigurational second-order perturbation method (MS-CASPT2) in conjunction with large atomic natural orbital-type basis sets. A very low energy barrier is found for the decomposition reaction: CH(3)NO(2) (-)--[CH(3)NO(2)](-)--CH(3)+NO(2) (-). No evidence has been obtained on the existence of an isomerization channel leading to the initial formation of the methylnitrite anion (CH(3)ONO(-)) which, in a subsequent reaction, would yield nitric oxide (NO). In contrast, it is suggested that NO is formed through the …

A potential solution to avoid overdose of mixed drugs in the event of Covid-19: Nanomedicine at the heart of the Covid-19 pandemic.

2021

Since 2020, the world is facing the first global pandemic of 21st century. Among all the solutions proposed to treat this new strain of coronavirus, named SARS-CoV-2, the vaccine seems a promising way but the delays are too long to be implemented quickly. In the emergency, a dual therapy has shown its effectiveness but has also provoked a set of debates around the dangerousness of a particular molecule, hydroxychloroquine. In particular, the doses to be delivered, according to the studies, were well beyond the acceptable doses to support the treatment without side effects. We propose here to use all the advantages of nanovectorization to address this question of concentration. Using quantum…

Density functional theory (DFT) prediction of structural and spectroscopic parameters of cytosine using harmonic and anharmonic approximations

2015

The applicability of popular and efficient B3LYP hybrid density functional and medium-size Pople-type basis set in combination with computationally expensive anharmonic model to obtain more accurate theoretical structure, vibrational frequencies and GIAO NMR parameters of cytosine was tested. We report on prediction of cytosine equilibrium (R e ) and rovibrationally averaged (R v ) structures and vibrational frequencies in the gas phase and DMSO solution using density functional theory combined with 6-311++G** basis set. The harmonic and anharmonic vibrational frequencies (using second-order vibrational perturbation theory, VPT2) were critically discussed. In comparison with initial harmoni…

Unravelling the GLY-PRO-GLU tripeptide induced reconstruction of the Au(110) surface at the molecular scale

2018

International audience; The adsorption of GLY-PRO-GLU tripeptide on Au(110) is investigated within the frame of all atom classical mechanics simulations and Density Functional Theory, focusing on the surface reconstruction. It is shown that the tripeptide adsorption reorganizes and restructures the Au(110) surface. A mechanism for the surface restructuration is proposed for both the neutral and zwitterionic form of the peptide at room temperature in Ultra High Vacuum. Diverse residues may be involved in the Au atoms displacement, and in particular glutamic acid, triggering a double proton transfer and the formation of a zwitter ionic state, is found to be responsible for the triggering of t…

A theoretical study of the low-lying excited states of thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine

2009

The low-lying electronic excited states of thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine have been studied using the multiconfigurational second-order perturbation CASPT2 theory with extended atomic natural orbital basis sets. The CASPT2 results allow for a full interpretation of the electronic absorption and emission spectra and provide valuable information for the rationalization of the experimental data. The nature, position, and intensity of the spectral bands have been analyzed in detail. A preliminary comparative study of the ground-state geometry of thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine has been performed at the coupled cluster single and doubles and density functional theory levels using a variety of correlation-consisten…

Amino acid chemistry in solution: structural properties and vibrational dynamics of serine using density functional theory and a continuum solvent mo…

2004

A structural and vibrational study of amino acid serine in aqueous solution has been carried out using Fourier transform spectroscopies and quantum mechanical calculations. FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra of serine in H2O and D2O solutions were recorded and a general assignment of the observed bands was proposed on the basis of a zwitterionic structure for serine. Main criteria were the observed wavenumber shifts upon deuteration and previous assignments for other amino acids. A quadratic force field was computed using ab initio methodology at the 6-31+G** level and the hybrid functional B3LYP. The solvent effect was simulated by placing the serine molecule into an ellipsoidal cavity surrounded …
