Training adults and children with an autism spectrum disorder to be compliant with a clinical dental assessment using a TEACCH-based approach
2014
The specific neuropsychological and sensory profile found in persons with autism spectrum disorders complicate dental procedures and as a result of this, most are treated under general anesthesia or unnecessary sedation. The main goal of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a short treatment and education of autistic and related communication-handicapped children-based intervention program (five sessions) to facilitate a 10-component oral assessment in children (n = 38, aged 4¿9 years) and adults (n = 34, aged 19¿41) with autism spectrum disorder (with or without associated intellectual disability). The assessment ranges from entering into the examination room to the evalu…

Patient safety in dentistry : dental care risk management plan
2010
Objectives: Although the safety of patients has been one of the inherent concerns of dental practice, but because the proposals made in the field of dentistry are few and improperly structured, this paper constitutes an attempt to present a proposal titled "Plan for Dental Health Care Risk Management," promoted by the General Council of Dentists of Spain, including a description of the proposed work methodology. Design: The "risk management plan" proposed in this paper is based on applying the basic concepts dealt with in patient safety to the field of dentistry, due to the fact that the available bibliography contains no specific "health care risk management plan" for dentistry specificall…
The Image Gently in Dentistry campaign: promotion of responsible use of maxillofacial radiology in dentistry for children
2014
© 2014 Published by Elsevier Inc. The Image Gently in Dentistry campaign to be launched in September 2014 is a specific initiative of the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging, supported by organized dentistry and dental education as well as many dental specialty organizations. The objective of the campaign is to change practice by increasing awareness of the opportunities to improve radiation protection when imaging children in dental practices. Six practical steps are provided that underline the principle that one size does not fit all, especially when it comes to using radiography during pediatric dental procedures. When we image children, let us image gently: More is often …
Virtual Reality environments to reduce dental anxiety
2018
Dental procedural pain and anxiety are issues that affect a conspicuous part of the population, leading to a decrease of dental care frequency. The problem affects the patient as well as the dentist, who often has to face a certain resistance by the patients while doing the necessary procedures. The aim of the study is to demonstrate that is possible to reduce this anxiety through the use of Virtual Reality (VR). A group of 7 patients was immersed in a VR scenario during dental treatment in order to distract them from the feared procedure. The results are encouraging and show how VR is capable of insulating the subject from the surrounding annoying stimuli
Corticotomies as a surgical procedure to accelerate tooth movement during orthodontic treatment : a systematic review
2015
Background One of the main aims of orthodontists is to reduce the treatment time as much as possible, particularly in view of the rise in demand for orthodontic treatment among adult patients. Material and Methods A systematic review of articles in 4 databases, Pubmed, Cochrane, Scopus and Embase, complemented by a manual search, identified 772 articles. The duplicates were eliminated and a critical reading of titles and abstracts led to the rejection of articles that did not meet the objectiv…
Dental management of patients with microstomia. A review of the literature and update on the treatment.

Although there have been reports of patients with diseases and syndromes that cause microstomia, the available literature offers only a limited number of reviews on this topic. The aim of this paper is to present a review of the etiology, clinical characteristics, diagnosis and treatment of microstomia. In addition, to describe the therapeutic adaptations to be ap…
