Effect of saliva contamination on bracket failure with a self-etching primer: A prospective controlled clinical trial
2010
Introduction The aim of this study was to evaluate in vivo the effect of saliva contamination at different stages of the bonding procedure on the bond failure rate and the adhesive remaining on teeth after debonding brackets bonded with a hydrophilic self-etching primer (Transbond Plus self-etching primer [TSEP], 3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif). Methods This was a prospective controlled clinical trial. The sample consisted of 46 patients with similar treatment plans and mechanotherapies. Stainless steel brackets (n = 531) were bonded with TSEP. The patients were divided into 2 groups: contamination with saliva before TSEP application and contamination with saliva after TSEP application. In both…
Lack of association between celiac disease and dental enamel hypoplasia in a case-control study from an Italian central region
2007
Abstract Background A close correlation between celiac disease (CD) and oral lesions has been reported. The aim of this case-control study was to assess prevalence of enamel hypoplasia, recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), dermatitis herpetiformis and atrophic glossitis in an Italian cohort of patients with CD. Methods Fifty patients with CD and fifty healthy subjects (age range: 3–25 years), matched for age, gender and geographical area, were evaluated by a single trained examiner. Diagnosis of oral diseases was based on typical medical history and clinical features. Histopathological analysis was performed when needed. Adequate univariate statistical analysis was performed. Results Enamel…
In vitro comparison of the retention capacity of new aesthetic brackets.
1999
Tensile bond strength and bond failure location were evaluated in vitro for two types of aesthetic brackets (non-silanated ceramic, polycarbonate) and one stainless steel bracket, using bovine teeth as the substrate and diacrylate resin as the adhesive. The results show that metallic bracket had the highest bond strength (13.21 N) followed by the new plastic bracket (12.01 N), which does not require the use of a primer. The non-silanated ceramic bracket produced the lowest bond strength (8.88 N). Bond failures occurred mainly between bracket and cement, although a small percentage occurred between the enamel-cement interface with the metal and plastic brackets and within the cement for the …
The effect of wavelet and discrete cosine transform compression of digital radiographs on the detection of subtle proximal caries. ROC analysis.
2007
The study compared diagnostic performances of 2 different image compression methods: JPEG (discrete cosine transform; Joint Photographic Experts Group compression standard) versus JPEG2000 (discrete wavelet transform), both at a compression ratio of 12:1, from the original uncompressed TIFF radiograph with respect to the detection of non-cavitated carious lesions. Therefore, 100 approximal surfaces of 50 tooth pairs were evaluated on the radiographs by 10 experienced observers using a 5-point confidence scale. Observations were carried out on a standardized viewing monitor under subdued light conditions. The proportion of diseased surfaces was balanced to approximately 50% to avoid bias. Tr…
Making white spots disappear! Do minimally invasive treatments improve incisor opacities in children with molar-incisor hypomineralisation?
2022
BACKGROUND Children with molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) frequently seek aesthetic treatment for incisor opacities. Surprisingly few studies have evaluated the clinical success of such interventions. AIM To quantify the effectiveness of minimally invasive treatments in reducing enamel opacity visibility in children with MIH. DESIGN This in-vitro study used digital clinical images of 23 children aged 8-16 years with MIH who underwent microabrasion and/or resin infiltration for management of incisor opacities. Standard images were taken pre- and six-months post-treatment. Image software (Image-Pro Plus®V7) was employed to convert 24-bit RGB images to 16-bit grey-scale and 45% magnifica…
Validation and casework testing of the BioPlex-11 for STR typing of telogen hair roots.
2005
A new STR typing strategy has been developed allowing the simultaneous amplification and subsequent analysis of 11 polymorphic systems with amplicon sizes smaller than 270 bp. The multiplex amplification reaction includes six STR loci from the European standard set of loci (ESS) for DNA databases (D3S1358, D8S1179, D21S11, THO1, FGA and VWA) as well as four additional STR systems selected for their robustness (D2S1338, D12S391, TPOX and D5S818) together with the sex-specific locus amelogenin. After PCR amplification, the multiplex reaction is splitted into two sets of STR multiplexes by using biotin labelled primers only for one set. Using streptavidin-coated Sepharose beads five STR system…
Microradiography and confocal laser scanning microscopy applied to enamel lesions formed in vivo with and without fluoride varnish treatment
1996
The aim of the present investigation was to combine 2 techniques suitable for lesion characterization: quantitative microradiography (TMR) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) on in vivo induced lesions with and without a fluoride varnish (Duraphat(R)) treatment. Orthodontic bands were attached to premolars to be extracted for orthodontic reasons to induce enamel caries on the buccal surfaces. In the caries development part of the study, 1 tooth of each pair received at the start 1 topical application with the fluoride varnish Duraphat(R), the contralateral tooth serving as untreated control. All teeth were extracted after 4 weeks. In the caries progression part, the premolars were…
Using ultrasound transmission velocity to analyse the mechanical properties of teeth after in vitro, in situ, and in vivo irradiation.
2000
Ultrasound transmission velocity (UTV) in isotropic material as a measure for the modulus of elasticity was correlated to mechanical properties. Changes in micromechanical properties of radiated teeth and influence of the oral cavity were to be evaluated nondestructively. UTV was measured in extracted teeth after 36 Gy and 62 Gy of in situ (enorally, with no contact to the oral cavity) and in vitro irradiation. Relative to controls, teeth subjected to 62 Gy in vivo showed higher UTV values for dentine and enamel. Sound teeth irradiated with 60 Gy in situ also showed higher UTV values for enamel, whereas dentine values were not significantly different from those of control. The mechanical pr…
High-resolution records of past and modern Pb exposure: Laser-ablation ICPMS profiles from tooth enamel
2006
We present compositional and isotopic profiles of past and modern tooth enamel aimed at reconstructing in-vivo Pb exposure at high spatial and time resolution. Focus is on dental enamel because of its sequential mineralization preserving time-series information, and due to its resistance to post-mortem diagenetic alteration. Examples include medieval Pb–Ag miners from SW Germany (Black Forest), the port of ancient Rome (Isola Sacra) for an assessment of the ‘Pb poisoning hypothesis’, and a modern Pb–Zn smelter village in NE NSW. (Sub-)ppb levels of U, LREEs, Y in soil-buried enamel resembling modern enamel are utilized as indicators for the preservation of pristine in-vivo concentrations. T…
Ability of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite paste to promote human periodontal ligament cell proliferation.
2008
Recent studies indicate that nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (nano-HA) paste represents a promising class of bone graft substitute. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of nano-HA function have not yet been determined. This study was conducted to investigate the proliferation of human periodontal ligament (PDL) cells cultured in the presence of nano-HA paste and to characterize associated changes in intracellular signaling pathways. Cultured PDL cells were stimulated with nano-HA paste and enamel matrix derivative (EMD) in a soluble form. Proliferation of PDL cells was determined by incorporation of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) in the DNA of proliferating cells. In order to understand th…
