Shear bond strength of partial coverage restorations to dentin
2015
BACKGROUND: When partial coverage restorations (veneers, inlays, onlays…) must be cemented to dentin, bond strength may not reach the same predictable values as to enamel. The purpose of this study was: 1. To compare, with a shear bond test, the bond strength to dentin of a total-etch and a self-etching bonding agent. 2. To determine whether creating microretention improves the bond strength to dentin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two bonding agents were assayed, Optibond FL® (Kerr), two-bottle adhesive requiring acid etching, and Clearfil SE Bond® (Kuraray), two-bottle self-etching adhesive. The vestibular, lingual, distal and mesial surfaces of ten molars (n=10) were ground to remove all enamel …
In vitro evaluation of microleakage in Class II composite restorations: High-viscosity bulk-fill vs conventiona…
2019
This study compared marginal microleakage of Class II cavities restored with bulk-fill resin (Filtek™ Bulk Fill) and conventional composite resin (Filtek™ Supreme XTE). Two standardized Class II cavities were prepared in forty extracted human molars. The gingival margin was located above the cemento-enamel junction for twenty molars (groups 1 and 2) and apically for the other twenty (groups 3 and 4) (n=20). The occlusomesial cavity was filled with bulk-fill resin by insertion in bulk (groups 1 and 3) and the occlusodistal cavity was restored with conventional composite using incremental technique (groups 2 and 4). The teeth were thermocycled (500 cycles 5-55°C), stained and observed under l…
Dentin bond strength and degree of conversion evaluation of experimental self-etch adhesive systems
2014
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different concentrations of 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) monomer in one-step self-etch experimental adhesives on dentinal microshear bond strength (μSBS), their degree of conversion and bonded micro structure. Material and Methods: Composite resin cylinders (Clearfil AP-X) were bonded on human sound molar dentinal surfaces by using five experimental one-step self-etching adhesives (1-SEAs) containing 0% (E0), 5% (E5), 10% (E10), 15% (E15), 20% (E20) (by weight) 10-MDP monomer and Clearfil S3 Bond (CS3) as a control. After 24 hours, microshear bond strength was tested. The degree of conversion was als…
Does the heat generated by fluorescence-aided caries excavation system effect the pulp temperature of primary teeth irreversibly? An in-vitro evaluat…
2021
Background This study aimed to analyze the effect of the Fluorescence Aided Caries Excavation (FACE) and the remaining dentin thickness on the temperature changes of the pulp chamber. Material and Methods Freshly extracted deciduous molars and a pulpal microcirculation model were used in the study. The sample size was calculated according to power analyses (power at 90%) based on previous studies. Thus, 40 samples were needed. Standard cavities (3x3 mm) were designed to obtain a 2 mm distance through to the pulp chamber, and in each tooth (n=10), these cavities were modified to obtain 1.5 mm, 1mm, and 0.5 mm final distance through to the pulp. Coronal parts of the teeth were placed on an ac…
Effects of different powder to liquid ratios on the push out bond strength of CEM cement on simulated perforations in the furcal area
2017
Background Proper bond strength to dentin is one of the properties of biomaterials used for therapeutic purposes such as repair of furcal perforations. The aim of the present study to evaluate the effects of different powder to liquid ratios of Calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) on the push-out bond strengths in simulated perforations in the furcal area and compare it with Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). Material and Methods Furcal perforations, measuring 1.3 mm in diameter and 2 mm in height, were prepared in 120 mandibular first molars. Then the samples were randomly assigned to two groups (n=60). MTA and CEM cement were used for the repair of perforations in groups 1 and 2, respectively. E…
Effect of adhesive layers on microshear bond strength of nanocomposite resin to dentin
2016
BACKGROUND Bond strength of adhesive layer can absorb unwanted stresses of polymerization shrinkage in composite resin restorations; increased microshear bond strength can prevent failure of restoration materials, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of adhesive layers on microshear bond strength of nanocomposite resin to dentin. MATERIAL AND METHODS Two different types of adhesive systems: universal adhesive (ExciTE) and newly developed adhesive (Nano-Bond), and one type of light-cured resin restorative material (Nanocomposite resin) were used in this study. The occlusal surfaces of extracted human molar teeth were ground perpendicular to the long axis of each tooth to expo…
Root canal shaping of curved canals by Reciproc Blue system and Pro Taper Gold: A micro-computed tomographic study
2021
Background This study aimed to evaluate the centralization and transportation of ProTaper Gold (PTG) rotary system and Reciproc Blue (RB) reciprocating system in curved canals, by using micro-CT. Material and Methods Twenty extracted mandibular molars were previously scanned by using the SkyScan 1174 microtomograph to select the Vertucci IV anatomic type. The specimens were divided into two groups (n=10) according to the mechanized system used to prepare the root canals. The teeth were scanned by micro-CT to calculate the increase volume, percentage of dentin removed, remaining dentin thickness, structure model index (SMI), degree of transportation and centering ability of root canals. The …
Comparing the antibacterial activity of gaseous ozone and chlorhexidine solution on a tooth cavity model
2013
Objective: To evaluate the antibacterial activity of gaseous ozone andchlorhexidine solution on a tooth cavity model. Study Design: Twenty-one human molars were divided into 3 groups. Cavities were then cut into the teeth (4 per tooth, 28 cavities per group). After sterilization, the teeth wereleft in broth cultures of 106 colony-forming units (CFU) ml-1 of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) at 36°C for 48 h. The appropriate treatment followed (group A, control; group B, 2% chlorhexidine solution; and group C, 80s of treatment with ozone, and the cavities were thenfilled with compositeresin. After 72h, the restorations were removed, dentin chips were collected with an excavator, and the total…
Ultrastructural patterns of human dentinal tubules, odontoblasts processes and nerve fibres.
2005
The structure of the dentin, consists of the following elements: the odontoblastic processes, dentinal tubules and their periodontoblastic spaces. The odontoblasts are aligned in a single layer in the periphery of the dental pulp and secrete the organic components of dentin. The vitality of dentin is mediated too by the nerve fibres. The ultrastructure of the trigeminal sensory nerves in dentin, especially in relation to odontoblasts remains to be clarified. We studied the third molars and young premolars. The specimens were fixed in glutaraldehyde immediately after extraction. Our investigations give evidence to prove that the distribution of the dentinary tubules is homogeneous, containin…
Ultramorphology and dentine permeability changes induced by prophylactic procedures on exposed dentinal tubules in middle dentine
2010
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes in dentinal permeability (i.e. hydraulic conductance) after prophylactic treatments performed using prophy-powders with air-polishing system or prophy-pastes on exposed middle dentine. The changes in dentine morphology were evaluated by SEM. Study design: Commercial prophylactic pastes and air-polishing powders were tested in this study. Dentine discs from human third molars were used to study the quantitative reduction of the dentine permeability under simulated pulpal pressure (20 cm H 2O). Further specimens were gold-coated and analysed using observed a SEM. Results: The results of this study showed different dentine perme…
