Using Survival Models with Individual Data

2007

Since there exists in this literature a common interest to unravel the sources of both permanence in the self-employment status and firm survival, the present chapter is devoted to provide guidelines to applied researchers about which methods are suitable for any particular application related to self-employment and firm survival. Further, it should be noted that the econometric analysis of survival (duration) is a very wide field, and that the modest aim of the following sections in this chapter is to introduce the reader to such kind of econometric analysis.

Global factors, uncertainty, weather conditions and energy prices: On the drivers of the duration of commodity price cycle phases

2020

We investigate the role of global factors in explaining the length of commodity price cycle phases, using a continuous-time Weibull duration model and data for a panel of 33 countries over the period 1980Q1-2015Q4. We find evidence of increasing (constant) positive duration dependence for commodity price booms and busts (normal time spells). Global macroeconomic conditions - in particular, inflation, economic policy uncertainty and monetary policy actions - significantly affect the duration of all commodity price cycle phases. Global environmental conditions also impact the duration of commodity price booms, with a rise in average temperature (rainfall) increasing (reducing) their length. A…

Inflation anchoring and growth: The role of credit constraints

2022

Abstract Can inflation anchoring foster growth? To answer this question, we use panel data on sectoral growth for 22 manufacturing industries from 39 advanced and emerging market economies over 1990–2014 and employ a difference-in-differences strategy based on the theoretical prediction that higher inflation uncertainty particularly depresses investment in industries that are more credit constrained. Industries characterized by high external financial dependence, liquidity needs, and R&D intensity, and low asset tangibility, tend to grow faster in countries with well-anchored inflation expectations. The results, based on an IV approach—using indicators of monetary policy transparency and ce…

Deficit sustainability and inflation in EMU: An analysis from the Fiscal Theory of the Price Level

2007

Price determination theory typically focuses on the role of monetary policy, while the role of fiscal policy is usually neglected. From a different point of view, the Fiscal Theory of the Price Level takes into account monetary and fiscal policy interactions and assumes that fiscal policy may determine the price level, even if monetary authorities pursue an inflation targeting strategy. In this paper we try to test empirically whether the time path of the government budget in EMU countries would have affected price level determination. Our results point to the sustainability of fiscal policy in all the EMU countries but Finland, although no firm conclusions can be drawn about the prevalence…

On the duration of sovereign ratings cycle phases

2021

Abstract Using long-term sovereign ratings data for a panel of 130 countries over the last three decades, we investigate the duration and determinants of sovereign rating phases through the lens of discrete-time Weibull models. We find that the likelihood of the end of the ‘speculative-grade’ phase increases as time goes by (i.e. there is positive duration dependence), but the ‘investment-grade’ phase is not duration dependent. Thus, for sovereigns rated as speculative, the build-up of reputation as good borrowers is a gradual process, whereas the reputation of investment-grade sovereigns solidifies and remains unchanged as time passes. However, the length of both phases significantly depen…

DEA-like models for efficiency evaluation of specialized and interdependent units

2001

Abstract The problem of evaluating the efficiency of a set of specialized and interdependent decision making subunits (DMSUs) that make up a larger decision making unit (DMU) is considered. The DMSUs are interdependent, in the sense that part of the output produced by each of them may be used as an input by the other ones. They are also specialized, hence non-homogeneous, as they may have not the same inputs and outputs. For this problem, some efficiency indexes are introduced, and they are shown to satisfy some basic properties.

Conflicting interests but filtered key targets: Stakeholder and resource-dependency analyses at a University of Applied Sciences

2013

Stakeholder theory (SHT) emphasizes that different stakeholders and their interests need to be identified and addressed to maximize firm performance. This emphasis can make the design of performance measurement systems (PMS) challenging because the interests of stakeholders are often in conflict. Based on previous research and using stakeholder and resource dependency theories, we develop a theoretical model suggesting that resource dependency acts as a “filter” in selecting which of the PMS design measures are emphasized for decision making. We find various conflicting interests between stakeholders in our case organization (a unit of University of Applied Sciences in Finland) that affecte…

Pressure-dependent modifications in the optical and electronic properties of Fe(IO3)3: the role of Fe 3d and I 5p lone–pair electrons

2021

We have determined by means of optical-absorption experiments that Fe(IO3)3 is an indirect band-gap material with a band-gap energy of 2.1 eV. This makes this compound the iodate with the smallest band gap. We also found that under compression the band-gap energy has an unusual non-linear pressure dependence, which is followed by an abrupt and discontinuous decrease of the band gap at 24 GPa. The observed behavior is explained by means of density-functional calculations, which show that the behavior of the band gap is governed by the combined influence of Fe 4d and I 5p lone pair electrons. In addition, the abrupt decrease of the band-gap energy at 24 GPa is a consequence of a first-order s…
