EPR Study of Gd3+local structure in ScF3crystal with negative thermal expansion coefficient

Zero field splitting (ZFS) of Gd3+ impurity in ScF3 is studied by electron paramagnetic resonance at 77 and 295 K. ZFS parameter b4 values obtained from angular dependence simulations show that regardless of negative thermal expansion in ScF3 temperature dependence of |b4| is similar to other cubic fluoroperovskites. Our analysis of ZFS parameters indicates that the local structure of Gd3+ centres expands positively with temperature.
Isotopic Effect In Extended X-Ray-Absorption Fine Structure of Germanium

Extended x-ray absorption fine structure has been measured on two powdered samples of 70Ge and 76Ge as a function of temperature from 20 to 300 K. The effect of isotopic mass difference on the amplitude of relative atomic vibrations is neatly evidenced by the temperature dependence of the difference of Debye-Waller factors. The isotopic effect is also detected on the difference of nearest-neighbor average ineratomic distances, thanks to a resolution better than 10 fm. (DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.100.055901)
Fluxon dynamics in Li–Al codoped by microwave surface resistance measurements

Abstract The magnetic-field-induced variations of the microwave surface resistance, R s , have been investigated in ceramic Mg1−x(LiAl)xB2, with x in the range 0.1 – 0.4 . The measurements have been performed on increasing and decreasing the DC magnetic field, H 0 , at fixed temperatures. At low temperatures, we have observed a magnetic hysteresis in the R s ( H 0 ) curves in all the investigated samples. On increasing the temperature, the range of H 0 in which the hysteretic behavior is visible shrinks; however, in the sample with x = 0.1 it is present up to temperatures close to T c . First and second viscosity measurements in superfluid 3He-B

By means of diaphragm-driven flow experiments in 3He-B in a thin slab geometry, we have measured the first and second viscosities, η and 3 at pressures of 0, 5, 10 and 29.3 bar. Our measurement of 3 has better established theoretical foundations than previous measurements and also extends to higher pressures. 3 and η were deduced from the frequency dependence of the flow dissipation determined from bandwidth measurements for several normal modes of the diaphragm; a first order slip correction was used in the determination of η. Near Tc, 3 α (1 - T/Tc)-1/2 in accordance with theoretical predictions but below T/Tc ~ 0.6 we observe a rapid drop in 3 signifying a departure from the hydrodynamic…
Temperature independence of birefringence and group velocity dispersion in photonic crystal fibres

Experimental results are presented for the dependence of the dispersion and the birefringence of a highly birefringent photonic crystal fibre with temperature. It is shown that, unlike conventional optical fibres, where temperature induces stress regions between the different materials present in their structure, photonic crystal fibres exhibit no dependence with temperature of these optical properties owing to the single material nature of their structures.
Temperature Sensor Based on Colloidal Quantum Dots PMMA Nanocomposite Waveguides

In this paper, integrated temperature sensors based on active nanocomposite planar waveguides are presented. The nanocomposites consist of cadmium selenide (CdSe) and cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots (QDs) embedded in a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) matrix. When the samples are heated in a temperature range from 25$^{circ}{rm C}$ to 50 $^{circ}{rm C}$, the waveguided photoluminescence of QDs suffers from a strong intensity decrease, which is approximately quadratic dependent on temperature. Moreover, the wavelength peak of the waveguided emission spectrum of CdTe-PMMA shows a blue shift of 0.25 ${rm nm}/^{circ}{rm C}$, whereas it remains constant in the case of CdSe-PMMA. A temperature…
Pressure dependence of density and structural relaxation of glass near the glass transition region

International audience; A simplified and effective pressure cell together with an experimental procedure has been developed and applied to compress samples of SCHOTT N-BK7 glass under static high pressures in a piston-cylinder apparatus. Results from the density and volume recovery measurements show that, the glass samples were effectively densified in piston-cylinder apparatus with the density at room temperature increasing linearly with frozen-in pressure. To explain the experimental data, we developed a mathematical model based on a suggestion by Gupta (1988) with two internal parameters, named fictive temperature (Tf) and fictive pressure (Pf), which fits the experimental data well.
