Simultaneous production of furfural and levulinic acid from pine sawdust via acid-catalysed mechanical depolymerization and microwave irradiation

2019

In this work pine sawdust was converted into levulinic acid (LA) and furfural. Sawdust was first pre-treated with sulfuric acid-catalysed mechanical depolymerization. The conversion reactions were then performed with microwave heating at 180 °C. To enhance the furfural yield and the efficient separation of furfural and LA, a biphasic water-toluene reaction system was used. The effect of an additional catalyst, AlCl3, on the yield of LA and furfural was also studied. According to the results the pre-treatment method enhanced the yields of LA. In addition, due to the microwave heating the reaction times were short. Additional AlCl3 catalyst enhanced the LA yield, however excellent furfural yi…

Overexpression of a cell wall enzyme reduces xyloglucan depolymerization and softening of transgenic tomato fruits.

2010

Xyloglucan xyloglucosyltransferase/endohydrolase (XTHs: EC 2.4.1.207 and/or EC 3.2.1.151) has been proposed to have a dual role integrating newly secreted xyloglucan chains into an existing wall-bound xyloglucan and restructuring existing cell wall material by catalyzing transglucosylation between previously wall bound xyloglucan molecules. In this work we generated transgenic tomatoes with altered levels of an XTH gene. These transgenic fruits showed significant overexpression of the XTH proteins in comparison with the wild type. Specific XET activity was approximately 4.33 fold higher in the transgenic fruits compared with the wild type fruits, although in both cases the activity decrease…

Solid acid-catalyzed depolymerization of barley straw driven by ball milling

2015

This study describes a time and energy saving, solvent-free procedure for the conversion of lignocellulosic barley straw into reducing sugars by mechanocatalytical pretreatment. The catalytic conversion efficiency of several solid acids was tested which revealed oxalic acid dihydrate as a potential catalyst with high conversion rate. Samples were mechanically treated by ball milling and subsequently hydrolyzed at different temperatures. The parameters of the mechanical treatment were optimized in order to obtain sufficient amount of total reducing sugar (TRS) which was determined following the DNS assay. Additionally, capillary electrophoresis (CE) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometr…

Boosting the methanolysis of polycarbonate by the synergy between ultrasound irradiation and task specific ionic liquids

2021

In an attempt to perform polycarbonate chemical recycling in a more sustainable way, we took into consideration the combined use of ultrasound irradiation and task specific ionic liquids. Towards this aim, the methanolysis of polycarbonate, into dimethylcarbonate and bisphenol A, was carried out in the presence of cholinium-based ionic liquids featuring anions derived from amino acids and other eco-friendly species. The target process was optimized in terms of both energy and material amounts as well as in terms of the nature of the catalysts used. The proposed protocol allowed high conversion and yields of bisphenol A to be obtained, under milder conditions compared to the ones so far repo…

Examples of xylochemistry: colorants and polymers

2017

Against the backdrop of modern sustainable chemistry and valorization of biomass for chemical raw materials, the syntheses of indigo dyes and polyamides as representatives of two classes of everyday chemical products based on xylochemicals are described. Wood-derived starting materials were transformed into functional materials using the principles of green chemistry to expand the scope of products gained from renewable resources. The indigo dyes were synthesized in a short, straightforward sequence starting from vanillin. Two polyamides, representatives of an important class of polymers, were obtained from 4-propylcyclohexanol, which is one of the longest known (and most abundant) hydrogen…

Der abbau von polyoxymethylenen. Poloxymethylene. 14. Mitteilung

1960

It is shown by quantitative measurements of the degradation of polyoxymethylenes under different conditions that essentially fiv…

Theoretical Elucidation of β-O-4 Bond Cleavage of Lignin Model Compound Promoted by Sulfonic Acid-Functionalized Ionic Liquid

2019

While the depolymerization of lignin to chemicals catalyzed by ionic liquids has attracted significant attention, the relevant molecular mechanism, especially the cleavage of specific bonds related to efficient depolymerization, still needs to be deeply understood for the complexity of this natural aromatic polymer. This work presents a detailed understanding of the cleavage of the most abundant β-O-4 bond in the model system, guaiacylglycerol β-guaiacyl ether, by a Brønsted acidic IL (1-methyl-3-(propyl-3-sulfonate) imidazolium bisulfate ([C3SO3Hmim][HSO4]) using density functional theory calculation and molecular dynamics simulation. It has been found that [C3SO3Hmim][HSO4] generates zwit…

Crystallization and Preliminary X-Ray Analysis of Rotavirus Protein VP6

1998

ABSTRACT As a first step to gain insight into the structure of the rotavirus virion at atomic resolution, we report here the expression, purification, and crystallization of recombinant rotavirus protein VP6. This protein has the property of polymerizing in the form of tubular structures in solution which have hindered crystallization thus far. Using a combination of electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering, we found that addition of Ca 2+ at concentrations higher than 100 mM results in depolymerization of the tubes, leading to an essentially monodisperse solution of trimeric VP6 even at high protein concentrations (higher than 10 mg/ml), thereby enabling us to search for crysta…
