Atmospheric Deposition Of Volcanogenic Major And Trace Elements On Mt. Etna (Italy)
2009
There are a variety of natural and anthropogenic sources of trace elements into the environment, and human activity has drastically changed the biogeochemical cycles and balance of several elements. In the last twenty years many efforts have been spent by the scientific community to better outline the levels of pollutants in the environment on a long-term basis, and to evaluate global large-scale changes. It is generally accepted that volcanic emissions are an important source of gases and particles to the atmosphere, contributing significantly to the natural geochemical cycles of all elements (Nriagu, 1989; Hinkley et al., 1999; Oppenheimer, 2003). Many studies have been carried out on the…
Aeolian Remobilisation of the 2011-Cordón Caulle Tephra-Fallout Deposit: Example of an Important Process in the Life Cycle of Volcanic Ash
2020
Although volcanic eruptions represent short periods in the whole history of a volcano, the large amount of loose pyroclastic material produced, combined with aeolian processes, can lead to continuous, long-lasting reworking of volcanic products. Driven by wind, these processes significantly influence the geomorphology and prolong the impacts of eruptions on exposed communities and ecosystems. Since such phenomena are of interest to scientists from a range of disciplines (e.g., volcanology, atmospheric and soil sciences), a well-defined, common nomenclature is necessary to optimise the multidisciplinary characterisation of both processes and deposits. We, therefore, first describe ash wind-r…
Atomic layer deposition of localised boron- and hydrogen-doped aluminium oxide using trimethyl borate as a dopant precursor
2020
Atomic layer deposition (ALD) of boron-containing films has been mainly studied for use in 2D materials and for B-doping of Si. Furthermore, lithium-containing borates show great promise as solid electrolyte coatings for enhanced energy storage. In this work, we examine trimethyl borate (TMB) and triethyl borate (TEB) in combination with O2 plasma as precursors for ALD of B-containing films, targeting the growth of B2O3. It is found that films grown from TEB contain no boron. Further work with TMB as a boron-containing precursor showed promising initial growth on a SiO2 or Al2O3 surface, but a rapid decrease of the growth rate during subsequent ALD cycles indicating surface inhibition durin…
Erosion, screening, and migration of tungsten in the JET divertor
2019
The erosion of tungsten (W), induced by the bombardment of plasma and impurity particles, determines the lifetime of plasma-facing components as well as impacting on plasma performance by the influx of W into the confined region. The screening of W by the divertor and the transport of W in the plasma determines largely the W content in the plasma core, but the W source strength itself has a vital impact on this process. The JET tokamak experiment provides access to a large set of W erosion-determining parameters and permits a detailed description of the W source in the divertor closest to the ITER one: (i) effective sputtering yields and fluxes as function of impact energy of intrinsic (Be,…
The impact of Mt. Etna volcanic emissions on the atmospheric deposition: developments and improvements during three decades of studies
2022
Volcanic emissions are an important source of gases and particles to the atmosphere. Mount Etna discharges a permanent volcanic plume consisting of water vapor and gaseous species (CO2, SO2, HCl and HF, mainly), metals, acid droplets, and solid particles. This plume interacts with meteoric water during precipitations events, so the chemical signature of the plume is impressed on the rainwater. Over the past 32 years, the impact of Etna's emissions on atmospheric deposition has been investigated in many research projects by our team. Sampling methodologies and analytical procedures have been improved over the years. The first study of the concentration of water-soluble inorganic ions in week…
Persistency of window dressing practices in the US repo markets after the GFC: The unexplored role of the deposit insurance premium
2022
We investigate whether the regulatory improvements made in the aftermath of the global financial crisis have been effective in limiting bank downward window dressing by means of repos in the United States. We find that a strict application of the Basel III regulation wipes out incentives to engage in window dressing to bolster the level of leverage Tier 1 ratio at quarter-end. We also show that the persistency of window dressing is related to the computation of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation assessment base, which motivates banks to engage in window dressing to reduce the deposit insurance premium.
Devona Daugavas svītas dolomītu litoloģiski rūpnieciskie tipi atradnēs Rīgas apkārtnē
2020
