International audience; Zn-clay minerals have been found in the non-sulfide deposit of Bou Arhous (High Atlas, Morocco). They occur as white or ochre clays embedding willemite (Zn2SiO4) and are commonly associated to red detrital clays in karstic cavities. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) with Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses were combined in order to characterize the clay minerals and to determine the mechanism of their formation. Mumijo is a widely used traditional medicine, especially in Russia, Altai Mountains, Mongolia, Iran Kasachstan and in Kirgistan. Mumijo preparations have been successfully used for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases; they display immune-stimulating and antiallergic activity as well. In the present study, we investigate the chemical composition and the biomedical potential of a Mumijo(-related) product collected from the Antarctica. Abrupt Alnus population decline at the end of the first millennium CE in Europe - The event ecology, possible causes and implications

The study, based on the examination of 70 published and unpublished pollen profiles from Poland and supplementary data from the surrounding regions, shows that an abrupt, episodic Alnus population decline at the end of the first millennium CE was a much more widespread event than has been previously reported, spanning large areas of the temperate and boreal zones in Europe. The data from Poland suggest that the decline was roughly synchronous and most likely occurred between the 9th and 10th centuries, with strong indications for the 10th century. Oral health status in patients with moderate-severe and terminal renal failure.

Aims. To evaluate the oral health status of patients with moderate-severe chronic renal failure (CRF) and with terminal renal failure (TRF). Design. The study group was formed of 50 patients: 22 (44%) with moderate-severe CRF and 28 (56%) with TRF included in a haemodialysis programme. The controls (n=64) presented similar characteristics with regard to sex, age, weight and educational level. A single dentist performed an intraoral examination on all the subjects, gathering information on: number of decayed, missing or filled teeth; supragingival plaque accumulation; calculus deposits; periodontal pockets in the Ramfjord teeth; and loss of insertion. During the Messinian salinity crisis (MSC) (from 5.97 to 5.33 Ma), the Mediterranean Sea became disconnected from the world’s oceans and a fast and continuous evaporation resulted in its partial desiccation. One of the theories for the end of the MSC postulates that a large volume of Atlantic waters entered the Mediterranean Sea through the Gibraltar Strait and rapidly refilled the Mediterranean basin in an event welldocumented known as the Zanclean Flood. The Middle-Late Quaternary littoral deposits of Western Sicily coastal belt (southern Italy): sedimentology and geomorphology
A multidisciplinary study has been carried out on the littoral deposits located along the western Sicily coastal belt, central Mediterranean region, with the aim of unravelling their origin and evolution through analysis of their lithology, texture, sedimentary structures, and geomorphological features. The deposits crop out between the towns of Trapani and Marsala and are distributed from the present-day coastline up to 120 m above sea level, forming four major discrete ridges in the landscape, each of separated by topographic depressions with flat or slightly concave upwards surfaces.
