Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on mental health : An international study

2020

Background The COVID-19 pandemic triggered vast governmental lockdowns. The impact of these lockdowns on mental health is inadequately understood. On the one hand such drastic changes in daily routines could be detrimental to mental health. On the other hand, it might not be experienced negatively, especially because the entire population was affected. Methods The aim of this study was to determine mental health outcomes during pandemic induced lockdowns and to examine known predictors of mental health outcomes. We therefore surveyed n = 9,565 people from 78 countries and 18 languages. Outcomes assessed were stress, depression, affect, and wellbeing. Predictors included country, sociodemogr…

Me, Myself, and My Thoughts : The Influence of Brooding and Reflective Rumination on Depressive Symptoms in Athletes in the United Kingdom

2020

Individual differences in vulnerability to depression are still underexplored in athletes. We tested the influence of different brooding and reflective rumination profiles (i.e., repetitive thought processes in response to low/depressed mood) on the odds of experiencing clinically relevant depressive symptoms in competitive athletes (N = 286). The Patient Health Questionnaire–9 and the Ruminative Responses Scale– short form were utilized to measure depression and rumination, respectively. Compared to athletes with a low brooding/reflection profile, athletes with a high brooding/reflection profile had significantly higher odds of experiencing clinical levels of depressive symptoms (OR = 13.4…

Affect regulation, mental health disorders, and maladaptive brain responses in music listening : a correlational study

2014

Affect regulation may be defined as a process by which an individual maintains or modifies his or her mood or emotional state, by conscious or automatic processes. Adequate affect regulation may play an important role in mitigating or preventing mental illness, which is a widespread, inadequately treated and inadequately understood phenomenon. Music, which is known to express and induce emotions, may be used for affect regulation in a variety of ways, both self-directed and in therapeutic contexts. The effectiveness, however, of different uses of music in affect regulation is not yet understood. Both psychological testing and neuro-imaging were used to explore the relationship between indiv…

Attitudes towards people with mental disorders in a general population in Finland :

2011

Stigma is common toward persons with mental health problems and can be defined as a label that sets a person apart from others, links her or him with undesirable characteristics and leads to avoidance by others in society. To aid in the planning of effective and well-targeted initiatives to reduce stigma I examined in my dissertation the prevalence of stigmatizing attitudes of a general population and the factors associated with stigmatizing of people with mental disorders in western Finland. Further, because only a minority of persons with depression are actually treated for their disorder it was also highly interesting to identify the role stigma might have on the use of mental health ser…

Suicide and depression in former contact sports participants: population-based cohort study, systematic review, and meta-analysis

2022

SummaryBackgroundTraumatic brain injury is associated with the future risk of depression and suicide, and this raises the possibility that former participants in sports characterised by low intensity repetitive head impact may also subsequently experience an increased burden of these mental health outcomes. Using new data from a cohort study integrated into a meta-analysis of the current evidence, we compared the occurrence of depression and suicide in former contact sports athletes against general population controls.MethodsThe cohort study comprised 2004 retired male athletes who had competed internationally on an amateur basis for Finland between 1920 and 1965, and 1385 age-equivalent ma…

Personal stigma and use of mental health services among people with depression in a general population in Finland

2011

Background - A minority of people suffering from depression seek professional help for themselves. Stigmatizing attitudes are assumed to be one of the major barriers to help seeking but there is only limited evidence of this in large general population data sets. The aim of this study was to analyze the associations between mental health attitude statements and depression and their links to actual use of mental health services among those with depression. Methods - We used a large cross-sectional data set from a Finnish population survey (N = 5160). Attitudes were measured by scales which measured the belief that people with depression are responsible for their illness and their recovery an…

Temperament and symptoms of stress and depression among adolescents: The mediating role of psychological flexibility

2023

Abstract Background Early appearing temperamental differences and the psychological flexibility skills of individuals are proposed factors influencing stress and depression among adolescents. We test the theoretical assumption that temperament may form a basis for facing the outer world, while the development of psychological flexibility being another such basis and a mediator in well-being outcomes. Methods Using data on 740 adolescents (Mage = 15.7 years, 57% female) assessed at the beginning and end of the final grade of basic education, structural equation modeling (SEM) with mediation analysis was conducted to examine the associations between the key temperament dimensions, changes in …

Masennusoireiden ja terveyspalvelujen käytön välinen yhteys : FIN-D2D-väestötutkimus

2017

Masennus on kansainvälisesti yksi merkittävimmistä toimintakykyä heikentävistä sairauksista. Masennusoireet lisäävät merkittävästi riskiä sairastua masennukseen. Ainoastaan vähemmistön masennuksesta kärsivistä on todettu hakevan apua sairauteen ja hoitoa haetaan sitä todennäköisemmin, mitä vaikeampi ja pitkäkestoisempi masennustila on, ja mitä suurempi siihen liittyvä koettu toimintakyvyn heikkeneminen on. Tämän poikkileikkaustutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää masennusoireiden yhteyttä terveyspalvelujen käyttöön. Lisäksi haluttiin selvittää, mitä terveyspalveluita käyttö kuormittaa ja mitkä taustatekijät ovat yhteydessä terveyspalvelujen käyttöön. Kolmen eri sairaanhoitopiirin alueilta…

Relationship between physical activity and predicted home presenteeism among participants with depressive symptoms with and without clinical depressi…

2021

Background and objectives Depression can pose a major threat to an individual’s ability to cope with daily activities. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between physical activity (PA) and predicted home presenteeism (PHP) among depressive participants. The relationship between PHP and the severity of depressive symptoms was also investigated. Methods A total of 760 participants with depressive symptoms (DS) aged ≥35 years participated in this study. The study was conducted between 2008 and 2016 in municipalities within the Central Finland Hospital District. DS were determined with the 21-item Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-21) with a cutoff score ≥10, and psychiatric dia…
