Trombiculiasis: an underreported ectoparasitosis in Sicily
2018
Trombiculiasis is a common but underreported ectoparasitosis characterized by an infestation of the skin by the larval stage of various species of mites belonging to the phylum Arthropoda, class Arachnida, subclass Acarina. Clinical manifestations consist of pruritic erythematous and urticarial macules and papules located on covered thin and glabrous skin. In recent studies Neotrombicula autumnalis larvae have been described as the possible vectors of pathogens such as Borrelia burgdorferi and Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Few reports of trombiculosis have been collected in the medical literature to date. We report a typical case of trombiculosis induced by trombiculid larvae of N. autumnalis,…
Avian mite dermatitis: an Italian case indicating the establishment and spread of Ornithonyssus bursa (Acari: Gamasida: Macronyssidae) (Berlese, 1888…
2015
Background Avian mite dermatitis is a skin disease caused in mammals by the incidental bites of blood-sucking mites which customarily parasitize wild and domestic birds. It manifests in the form of pruritic, erythematous, or urticarial papules, with a central sting mark, in skin regions normally covered by clothing. The species mainly implicated in human bite cases are Dermanyssus gallinae, Ornithonyssus sylviarum and, less frequently, Ornithonyssus bursa. The latter is mainly a tropical and subtropical mite and its – presumably transitory – presence has been recorded only once in Europe, in migratory birds. Case report We report a case of avian mite dermatitis in a 70-year-old man, an owne…
In vivo cimetidine immunomodulatory effects on the cutaneous reaction to oxazolone in the chicken.
1997
The effect of the histamine H2-receptor antagonist, cimetidine, on the cutaneous Arthus-like hypersensitivity to oxazolone elicited injecting subcutaneously oxazolone conjugated to egg-albumin (EA-OX) has been examined in the chicken. Cimetidine had opposite effects on the cutaneous reaction to oxazolone in relation to a different immunization schedule. Cimetidine enhanced the cutaneous reaction to oxazolone obtained immunizing chickens with oxazolone dissolved in ethanol (Eth-OX); instead cimetidine inhibited the cutaneous reaction obtained in chickens immunized with oxazolone dissolved in complete Freund adjuvant (CFA-OX). Optimum enhancement of the cutaneous arthus-like reaction to oxazo…
Foetal exposure to heavy metals and risk of atopic diseases in early childhood
2020
International audience; Background: Accumulating evidence suggests that in utero exposures can influence the development of the immune system and thus contribute to disease development. Studies investigating the association between prenatal exposures to heavy metals and atopic diseases, however, are scarce. Methods: Children from the EDEN birth cohort were prospectively followed up using parental questionnaires with validated questions on asthma, allergic rhinitis, eczema, and food allergy symptoms. The questionnaires were administered every 4 months during the children's first year, and then every year until the age of 5, with a final survey at the age of 8. Serum concentrations of lead (Pb…
Contact sensitizers modulate mechanisms of receptor-mediated endocytosis but not fluid-phase endocytosis in murine epidermal Langerhans cells.
1995
In order to define the influence of contact allergens on the fluid-phase endocytosis (FPE) of soluble molecules of murine epidermal Langerhans cells (LC), we studied the internalization of FITC-labeled bovine serum albumin (FITC-BSA), TRITC-labeled dextrane (TRITC-DEX) as well as horseradish peroxidase by LC. A 3-parameter flow-cytometric technique was performed for quantification of internalized FITC-BSA in LC using quantum red-labeled reagents for detection of la-antigen expression by LC and propidium iodide for exclusion of dead cells from analysis. A temperature-dependent rapid accumulation of FITC-BSA was noticed in time-course studies reaching a plateau between 1 and 2 h of in vitro c…
An approach to predictive testing of contact sensitizers in vitro by monitoring their influence on endocytotic mechanisms.
1996
Endocytotic activation of epidermal Langerhans cells (LC) by immunogenic haptens is an early event during development of allergic contact dermatitis. In this work a fast and objective flow-cytometric assay for predictive in vitro testing of contact sensitizers by monitoring their influence on endocytotic mechanisms in murine LC was developed. Epidermal cell suspensions were labelled with a monoclonal antibody directed to MHC class II molecules and pH-sensitive fluorochrome-coupled second-step reagents. For untreated LC a significant quenching of fluorescence intensity by internalization of the MHC-antibody complexes into acidic compartments was noticed. Similar results were obtained in the …
Contact dermatitis: etiologies of the allergic and irritant type
2020
The term contact dermatitis describes an inflammatory process of the skin that occurs in response to contact with exogenous substances and involves pruritic and erythematous patches. Approximately 80% of all contact dermatitis is primary irritant contact dermatitis (ICD), whereas allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) makes up only 20% of contact dermatitis cases, the estimated prevalence of contact dermatitis in the United States being 1.4%. Among patch-tested patients, nickel has been identified as the most common allergen. Cobalt is the second most common metal allergen and is found in various dental alloys, paints, and coloring components of porcelain and glass. The average prevalence of der…
The "red umbilicus": a diagnostic sign of cow's milk protein intolerance
2006
Introduction: Red umbilicus is considered to be an infectious disease typical of neonates. In our experience, umbilical erythema could be due to cow's milk protein intolerance (CMPI). Aims: To evaluate the frequency and clinical significance of umbilical erythema in a series of consecutive children referred for suspected CMPI. Patients and Methods: Seven hundred ninety-six consecutive patients (median age, 18 months) referred for suspected CMPI diagnosis were studied. CMPI diagnosis was based on the disappearance of symptoms on elimination diet and their subsequent reappearance on double-blind placebo-controlled cow's milk challenge. Results: CMPI was diagnosed in 384 patients: 120 with res…
Development of curcumin loaded sodium hyaluronate immobilized vesicles (hyalurosomes) and their potential on skin inflammation and wound restoring.
2015
In the present work new highly biocompatible nanovesicles were developed using polyanion sodium hyaluronate to form polymer immobilized vesicles, so called hyalurosomes. Curcumin, at high concentration was loaded into hyalurosomes and physico-chemical properties and in vitro/in vivo performances of the formulations were compared to those of liposomes having the same lipid and drug content. Vesicles were prepared by direct addition of dispersion containing the polysaccharide sodium hyaluronate and the polyphenol curcumin to a commercial mixture of soy phospholipids, thus avoiding the use of organic solvents. An extensive study was carried out on the physico-chemical features and properties o…
