Needles of four spruce trees showing different degrees of novel kinds of forest decline were investigated by electron microscopy. Green needles appearing at least superficially still intact were selected for the present investigation. Most of the mesophyll appeared to be undamaged. However, groups of atypical mesophyll cells were found close to the endodermis or the hypodermis. The chloroplasts of the apparently damaged cells were particularly affected. Changes in the matrix of the chloroplasts, i.e,. increased affinity to osmium, occurrence of extensive nests of plastoglobuli, as well as damage to the membranes, i.e. lesions in the envelope and abnormal thylakoid membranes, were observed. …

PLLA scaffold suitable for dermis regeneration were realized by Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) starting from a ternary solution PLLA/dioxane/water. The reconstruction of a complex tissues as the dermis implies the use of different cellular types (coculture), with different growth behaviour (2D vs. 3D). The scaffolds present an homogeneous porous surface to allow the keratinocytes 2D growth and a porous internal structure for the fibroblasts 3D growth. The NO synthases (NOS) generate NO from L-arginine. High concentrations of NO have been shown to be responsible for tissue injury and cell death, while low concentrations of NO induce vasodilatation and other signaling effects. We have investigated the involvement of NO in contact hypersensitivity (CHS) reactions. In this work, the production and characterization of electrospun scaffolds of the copolymer α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide-graft-polylactic acid (PHEA-g-PLA), proposed for a potential topical release of Ibuprofen (IBU), are reported. The drug has been chemically linked to PHEA-g-PLA and/or physically mixed to the copolymer before electrospinning. Posidonia oceanica is the most common, widespread and important monocotyledon seagrass in the Mediterranean Basin, and hosts a large biodiversity of species, including microorganisms with key roles in the marine environment. In this study, we ascertain the presence of a fungal endophyte in the roots of P. oceanica growing on different substrata (rock, sand and matte) in two Sicilian marine meadows.
