Patient documentation for the ultrasound laboratory
1991
The development of a PC based system for the storage of patient data in the echocardiography laboratory is described. Special design objectives were low cost and user friendliness, including an integrated special query language. After 3 years of use, the system stores 80000 diagnoses from 12000 patients without any relevant slowdown of response. Future developments concerning the communication between the database system and an echocardiographic sector scanner are discussed.
Programming languages for data-Intensive HPC applications: A systematic mapping study
2020
This work is a result of activities from COST Action 10406 High -Performance Modelling and Simulation for Big Data Applications (cHiPSet), funded by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology. FCT, Portugal for grants: NOVA LINCS Research Laboratory Ref. UID/ CEC/ 04516/ 2019); INESC-ID Ref. UID/CEC/50021/2019; BioISI Ref. UID/MULTI/04046/2103; LASIGE Research Unit Ref. UID/CEC/00408/ 2019. A major challenge in modelling and simulation is the need to combine expertise in both software technologies and a given scientific domain. When High-Performance Computing (HPC) is required to solve a scientific problem, software development becomes a problematic issue. Considering the complexity…
Reversible Doctrine : essays on the unstable discipline of architectural design
2016
Graphic readings and digital configurations: Akragas, Girgenti and Agrigento
2018
The study deals with a graphic analysis of the city of Agrigento through the identification of the territorial, urban and architectural peculiarities that have designed its evolution. Starting from the landscape representations realized since the sixteenth century, the views from the sea by Spannocchi, the glances on the apric territory by Pancrazi, the Hellenic ruins inside the medieval Girgenti by Martorana and the Grand Tour travelers’ productions, the urban transformations of Agrigento are reconstructed starting from the points of view adopted by the draftsmen. The aim is to provide a description through images of the multiple points of view with respect to which the territory has been …
Mapping geographical inequalities in access to drinking water and sanitation facilities in low-income and middle-income countries, 2000-17.
2020
Background: Universal access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities is an essential human right, recognised in the Sustainable Development Goals as crucial for preventing disease and improving human wellbeing. Comprehensive, high-resolution estimates are important to inform progress towards achieving this goal. We aimed to produce highresolution geospatial estimates of access to drinking water and sanitation facilities. Methods: We used a Bayesian geostatistical model and data from 600 sources across more than 88 low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) to estimate access to drinking water and sanitation facilities on continuous continent-wide surfaces from 2000 to 2017, and…
RATIONAL DESIGN AND SYNTHESIS OF NOVEL INHIBITORS OF EPIGENETIC TARGET INVOLVED IN CANCER
2021
Protocol for rational design of covalently interacting inhibitors.
2014
The inhibition potencies of covalent inhibitors mainly result from the formation of a covalent bond to the enzyme during the inhibition mechanism. This class of inhibitors has essentially been ignored in previous target-directed drug discovery projects because of concerns about possible side effects. However, their advantages, such as higher binding energies and longer drug-target residence times moved them into the focus of recent investigations. While the rational design of non-covalent inhibitors became standard the corresponding design of covalent inhibitors is still in its early stages. Potent covalent inhibitors can be retrieved from large compound libraries by covalent docking approa…
New antitrichomonal drug-like chemicals selected by bond (edge)-based TOMOCOMD-CARDD descriptors.
2008
Bond-based quadratic indices, new TOMOCOMD-CARDD molecular descriptors, and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were used to discover novel lead trichomonacidals. The obtained LDA-based quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) models, using nonstochastic and stochastic indices, were able to classify correctly 87.91% (87.50%) and 89.01% (84.38%) of the chemicals in training (test) sets, respectively. They showed large Matthews correlation coefficients of 0.75 (0.71) and 0.78 (0.65) for the training (test) sets, correspondingly. Later, both models were applied to the virtual screening of 21 chemicals to find new lead antitrichomonal agents. Predictions agreed with experimental resu…
A high-quality homology model for the human dopamine transporter validated for drug design purposes.
2018
The human dopamine transporter (hDAT) plays many vital functions within the central nervous system and is thus targeted by many pharmaceutical agents. Dopamine-related therapies are in current development for individuals with dopamine-related disorders including depression, Parkinson's disease, and psychostimulant addictions such as cocaine abuse. Yet, most efforts to develop new dopamine therapies are within costly structure-activity relationship studies. Through structure-based drug design techniques, the binding site of hDAT can be utilized to develop novel selective and potent dopamine therapies at reduced costs. However, no structural models of hDAT specifically validated for rational …
