This chapter documents the sampling design adopted in SHARE. Starting with a definition of the SHARE target population, we describe the protocol that is followed to harmonise and document the sampling procedure and present the sampling frames used by the countries that recruited a baseline or refreshment sample in Wave 7. We then discuss some important aspects of the SHARE sampling design, such as stratification, clustering, variation in selection probabilities and sample composition. Finally, we provide additional information about the sampling variables included in the released SHARE dataset.

Despite the progress made by scholars, empirically investigating entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs) remains problematic because of the inherent complexities and nonlinearities of interactions among EE actors. The research to date has shown a tendency to focus on macrolevel ecosystem dynamics while neglecting the microfoundations of EEs. In a recently published work, a new class of Balanced Asymmetrical Nearly Orthogonal Designs (BANOD2) was proposed, which can simultaneously estimate both first and second order effects of all factors, with a limited run size. The motivation for the new class lies in using the balancing property as a necessary precondition for several practical concerns arising in the experimentation field. Physical experiments in industrial product development are often very expensive but also necessary sometimes even for safety reasons (think about the crash tests in the automotive industry conducted with new and completely equipped vehicles). Therefore there is a pressing need to reduce this cost as much as possible. Computer experiments may be a viable solution provided that their results are reliable as much as the physical ones.
