Multi-Control Virtual Reality Driving Simulator

2019

Immersive technologies (virtual and augmented reality) started gaining a lot of ground over the past few years initially in the video game industry, followed by simulators and finally integrated into many other classic applications. This paper aims to analyze how users respond to using new controlling devices in a scene designed as a driving simulator (race car track). The landscape and the controls are specifically tailored for interactions within immersive environments. In order to understand the capabilities of the experimental application and evaluate the new controls, several tests were conducted. The results are presented from a user experience perspective, emphasizing qualities, side…

Binarization of a super-resolving graytone pupil filter by digital halftoning

1995

— Six digital-halftoning procedures, including one algorithm proposed by us, are compared to determine which one is best suited to binarization of a parabolic super-resolving pupil filter. The procedures we deal with include iterative, error-diffusion, error-convergence, and 1-pixel algorithms. We carry out a numerically simulated experiment in which an object that consists of either one point source or two coherent point sources is imaged in a 4f imaging system with either a continuous super-resolving parabolic filter or one of its six different binary versions. The performance of binary filters is examined in terms of two parameters: the resemblance of their amplitude impulse response (AI…

Current characterisation for ultra low power wireless body area networks

2010

The emerging area of body area networks (BAN) imposes challenging requirements on hardware and software to achieve the desired lifetimes for certain devices such as long term medical implants. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to the measurement and characterisation of the energy consumption of BAN devices. The approach uses a low cost energy auditing circuit and addresses the problem of accurately measuring low-level current consumption. This new technique will allow precise and analytical measurements of systems and components in terms of energy. This will help circuit designers minimise power consumption in BAN devices. Software engineers might use this approach to validate and …

Domain-Driven Reuse of Software Design Models

2011

This chapter presents an approach to software development where model driven development and software reuse facilities are combined in a natural way. The basis for all of this is a semiformal requirements language RSL. The requirements in RSL consist of use cases refined by scenarios in a simple controlled natural language and the domain vocabulary containing the domain concepts. The chapter shows how model transformations building a platform independent model (PIM) can be applied directly to the requirements specified in RSL by domain experts. Further development of the software case (PSM, code) is also supported by transformations, which in addition ensure a rich traceability within the s…

The Aquatic Surface Robot (AnSweR), a Lightweight, Low Cost, Multipurpose Unmanned Research Vessel

2021

Even though a few examples of aquatic surface robots exist, they are generally expensive, relatively large and heavy and tailored to custom-made hardware/software components that are not openly available to a broad public. In this work, the Aquatic Surface Robot (AnSweR), a newly-designed, lightweight, low cost, open-source, multipurpose unmanned research vessel is presented. The AnSweR features a lightweight and compact design that makes it fit in a backpack. Low-noise operation (in and above the surface) is achieved with a propulsion system based on two water-jets. Only affordable commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components are adopted. The primary goal of the AnSweR is to map underwater l…

Intelligent eye

2010

This paper describes Intelligent Eye, a mobile phone interactive leisure guide that offers location-based multimedia information. The information offered is related to the user's position, so the main goal of this work is the development of an efficient system to detect where the user is pointing his/her camera at by means of a content-based image retrieval algorithm (CBIR). The CBIR procedure uses color histograms in the HS color space extracted from images, and employs Kullback-Leibler divergence as the similarity measure. Intelligent Eye can be used in a wide range of camera-equipped mobile phones; however, efficiency is improved if GPS data is available. In order to outperform other sys…

A Viscoelastic Model for the Long-Term Deflection of Segmental Prestressed Box Girders

2017

Most of segmental prestressed concrete box girders exhibit excessive multidecade deflections unforeseeable by past and current design codes. To investigate such a behavior, mainly caused by creep and shrinkage phenomena, an effective finite element (FE) formulation is presented in this article. This formulation is developed by invoking the stationarity of an energetic principle for linear viscoelastic problems and relies on the Bazant creep constitutive law. A case study representative of segmental prestressed concrete box girders susceptible to creep is also analyzed in the article, that is, the Colle Isarco viaduct. Its FE model, based on the aforementioned energetic formulation, was succ…

Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory Network for Multitemporal Cloud Detection Over Landmarks

2019

In this work, we propose to exploit both the temporal and spatial correlations in Earth observation satellite images through deep learning methods. In particular, the combination of a U-Net convolutional neural network together with a convolutional long short-term memory (LSTM) layer is proposed. This model is applied for cloud detection on MSG/SEVIRI image time series over selected landmarks. Implementation details are provided and our proposal is compared against a standard SVM and a U-Net without the convolutional LSTM layer but including temporal information too. Experimental results show that this combination of networks exploits both the spatial and temporal dependence and provides st…

Co-simulation platform based on systemc for multiprocessor system on chip architecture exploration

2007

Currently multiprocessor embedded systems are the principal vectors of semiconductor industry. Modelling, validating and analyzing a system performances impose the evolution of the traditional simulation techniques. In this paper we define the methodology we used in constructing the STARSoC co-simulation environment. This platform aims to explore at higher levels of abstractions a multiprocessors system on chip architectures. The platform reference design contains several OpenRISC 1200 Instruction Set Simulators (ISSs) wrapped under SystemC, and some basic peripherals within the SystemC simulation framework. Our purpose is to develop a complete design space exploration tool. In order to ass…

Design Space Exploration for a Custom VLIW Architecture: Direct Photo Printer Hardware Setting Using VEX Compiler

2008

Increasingly more computing power is demanded for contemporary applications such as multimedia, 3D visualization, and telecommunication. This paper presents a design space exploration (DSE) experience for an embedded VLIW processor that allows finding out the best architecture for given application. The proposed method has been implemented and tested using an image processing chain for direct photo printer. Our results show a considerable improvement in hardware cost and performance. After the best architecture is identified, we applied a technique to optimize the code in VEX system that uses ?inlining? function in order to reduce execution time.
