Sentinel node mapping in endometrial cancer: Tips and tricks to improve bilateral detection rate. The sentitricks study, a monocentric experience.

2020

Abstract Objective The objective of the study is to show some small tricks for bilateral sentinel lymph node (SLN) uptake in endometrial cancer. Materials and methods Each step of the sentinel lymph node technique was analyzed. The cervix was exposed through the use of vaginal valves and by Martin pliers stapling of the anterior cervical lip. Fifty mg Indocyanine Green (ICG) powder was diluted with 10 ml of physiological solution. The spinal needle was marked at 15 mm with a steri-strip. After 20 min from the administration, in case of no LNS identification, an additional 1 ml in the non-detected side was administered in the superficial cervical area. All cervical injections were made by a …

Wilms tumours diagnosed by routine physical examinations.

1988

Sir: The prognosis of stage I and -II Wilms tumours with favourable histology is good, reaching 97% (stage I) and 92% (stage II) 5 year disease-free survival rates [1]. With these figures in mind the question arises whether the overall prognosis of Wilms tumours could be improved by presymptomatic routine physical examinations in an attempt to avoid stage III to V primary diagnoses. In the Federal Republic of Germany six routine physical examinations (RPE) are offered to infants, and two additional ones to children between 12 and 48 months. The 1980-1987 German Wilms tumour study [1] listed 313 patients, 29 of whom (9%) were diagnosed by such routine examinations. As shown in Table 1, the R…

The CSI-education effect: Do potential criminals benefit from forensic TV series?

2018

Abstract Forensic series have become popular over the last two decades. They have raised the importance of forensic evidence in the eyes of the public (CSI effect). However, it has not been investigated to what extent criminals may learn about forensic evidence through these shows. We used multiple approaches to tackle this potential CSI-education effect. First, we analyzed crime statistics for crime and detection rate. Second, we asked convicted criminals about their impressions about the usefulness of crime shows for covering up a crime. Third, we asked fans of crime series and a control group of non-watchers to slip into the role of a criminal by enacting the cleaning up a murder crime s…

Advanced Virgo Status

2015

Abstract The detection of a gravitational wave signal in September 2015 by LIGO interferometers, announced jointly by LIGO collaboration and Virgo collaboration in February 2016, opened a new era in Astrophysics and brought to the whole community a new way to look at - or “listen” to - the Universe. In this regard, the next big step was the joint observation with at least three detectors at the same time. This configuration provides a twofold benefit: it increases the signal-to-noise ratio of the events by means of triple coincidence and allows a narrower pinpointing of GW sources, and, in turn, the search for Electromagnetic counterparts to GW signals. Advanced Virgo (AdV) is the second ge…

An accurate and efficient collaborative intrusion detection framework to secure vehicular networks

2015

Display Omitted We design and implement an accurate and lightweight intrusion detection framework, called AECFV.AECFV aims to protect the vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) against the most dangerous attacks that could occurred on this network.AECFV take into account the VANET's characteristics such as high node's mobility and rapid topology change.AECFV exhibits a high detection rate, low false positive rate, faster attack detection, and lower communication overhead. The advancement of wireless communication leads researchers to develop and conceive the idea of vehicular networks, also known as vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). Security in such network is mandatory due to a vital informa…

Strategies for identifying dysplasia in Barrett's oesophagus

2012

Abstract Early neoplastic changes in Barrett's oesophagus are often only recognizable visually as discrete mucosal irregularities. With timely diagnosis, the prognosis is excellent, in contrast to advanced tumours in Barrett's oesophagus. The international specialist societies therefore recommend regular endoscopic surveillance for patients who have been diagnosed with Barrett's oesophagus. Following the 1993 Seattle Protocol, the various guidelines consistently require four-quadrant biopsy sampling every 1–2 cm over the entire Barrett's segment and additional biopsies from visually suspicious-appearing areas. This approach is time-consuming and costly, and inevitably involves sampling erro…

Impact of CT and MR on the Diagnostic Evaluation of Neurologic and Neurosurgical Diseases

1989

Today CT and MR are considered to be the most important and most reliable methods for the diagnosis of brain tumors. The sensitivity of these modalities in the detection of intracranial tumors approaches 100%. The extraordinary value of both methods is based not only on this high detection rate but also on their ability to localize tumors in relation to vital centers, assess their mass effect, and establish the tissue type of the lesion (= specificity).

Prenatal diagnosis and epidemiology of multicystic kidney dysplasia in Europe

2014

ObjectivesThe aim of this study is to describe the prenatal diagnosis and epidemiology of multicystic kidney dysplasia (MCKD). MethodsThe study is based on routinely collected data from a European database of major congenital anomalies including 13 registries with cases born in 1997-2006 and covering 1458552 births. ResultsThere were 601 MCKD cases giving an overall prevalence of 4.12 per 10000 births with regional variation. In live births, 87% of cases had an isolated renal anomaly and 13% had associated major nonrenal anomalies (chromosomal, syndrome or other major anomalies). For the cases with isolated renal anomalies, 51/386 (11%) and 7/386 (2%) choose to terminate the pregnancy or re…
