The Correlation of the Principles of International Law in the Context of Nagorno-Karabagh Conflict Resolution

2009

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is one of the most bloody and large-scale conflicts in the post-Soviet region. This is an old conflict with its own genesis and internal dynamics. The conflict is considered to be a real obstacle to the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Different political and economic factors play a major role in the regulation of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: the geostrategic interests of regional hegemons and the question of who controls its oil riches. Not surprisingly, the process of conflict regulation in Nagorno-Karabakh is a highly politicized issue. To date, little or no attention has been paid to the legal aspects of the conflict, and the pos…

Analytical challenges to determine emerging persistent organic pollutants in aquatic ecosystems

2018

Emerging persistent organic pollutants (ePOPs) include polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride/perfluorooctane sulfonate (POSF/PFOS), which are newly listed in the Stockholm Convention. Other ePOPs, which have not been regulated, include organophosphate flame retardants (PFRs), novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) and other perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Often ePOPs data related to occurrence, toxicity, impact or environmental behavior are insufficient or inadequate because of the lack of proper analytical methods to obtain them. Thus, a critical review of the analytical procedures proposed in the last six years (2011–2017) for determining ePOPs…

Colloidal crystallization dynamics

1997

At sufficiently strong interparticle interaction, colloidal particles may form ordered crystalline arrays much in analogy to atomic systems. Well characterized model colloidal suspensions have therefore become valuable model systems for the study of the kinetics of crystal nucleation, growth and ripening. Significant progress has been made in this area throughout the past few years. Precise control of interaction parameters and new instrumental developments have allowed for quantitative determination of nucleation rate densities and growth velocities in monodisperse ‘hard’ and ‘soft sphere’ systems. Results confirm classical theories of nucleation and growth adapted to colloidal systems. Th…

Relationship between UVB and broadband solar radiation in Spain

2014

The daily values of UVB irradiation (290–315 nm), IUVB, and the broadband total irradiation (300–2800 nm), IT, measured on a horizontal plane have been correlated for the period 2000–2008 at 16 measurement sites in Spain. The results have been compared with the daily experimental values registered at the same sites during the period 2009–2011. The coefficients of determination R2 obtained by applying a linear regression are higher than 0.88 for all sites and increase to 0.94 when using a quadratic regression. When all data are considered together, the values of R2 are 0.91 and 0.97 for the linear and quadratic regressions, respectively. Three different clearness indices, which are dimension…

Control of dataset bias in combined Affymetrix cohorts of triple negative breast cancer

2014

AbstractHeterogenous subtypes of breast cancer need to be analyzed separately. Pooling of datasets can provide reasonable sample sizes but dataset bias is an important concern. We assembled a combined dataset of 579 Affymetrix microarrays from triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) in Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) series GSE31519. We developed a method for selecting comparable datasets and to control for the amount of dataset bias of individual probesets.

Predicting the Significance of Necessity

2019

With Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA), a necessity effect is estimated by calculating the amount of empty space in the upper-left corner in a plot with a predictor X and an outcome Y, and recently a method for testing the statistical significance of the necessity effect through permutation has been proposed. In the present simulation study, this method was found to give significant results already with a very weak true population necessity effect, i.e., exhibit high power, unless the sample size is very small. However, in some situations the significance of the necessity effect tends to increase with increased degree of sufficiency, which is paradoxical for a method whose objective is to …

A cautionary note on the finite sample behavior of maximal reliability.

2019

Several calls have been made for replacing coefficient α with more contemporary model-based reliability coefficients in psychological research. Under the assumption of unidimensional measurement scales and independent measurement errors, two leading alternatives are composite reliability and maximal reliability. Of these two, the maximal reliability statistic, or equivalently Hancock's H, has received a significant amount of attention in recent years. The difference between composite reliability and maximal reliability is that the former is a reliability index for a scale mean (or unweighted sum), whereas the latter estimates the reliability of a scale score where indicators are weighted di…

Methodology and technology for peripheral and central blood pressure and blood pressure variability measurement: current status and future directions…

2016

Office blood pressure measurement has been the basis for hypertension evaluation for almost a century. However, the evaluation of blood pressure out of the office using ambulatory or self-home monitoring is now strongly recommended for the accurate diagnosis in many, if not all, cases with suspected hypertension. Moreover, there is evidence that the variability of blood pressure might offer prognostic information that is independent of the average blood pressure level. Recently, advancement in technology has provided noninvasive evaluation of central (aortic) blood pressure, which might have attributes that are additive to the conventional brachial blood pressure measurement. This position …

Polymere acroleine. III. Mittteilung. Oximierung und quantitative Bestimmung der Aldehydgruppen

1956

Th. The oximation reaction of disacryl is described. The conditions of a quantitative determination of aldehyde function in polymeric acroleins have been investigated. It has been shown, that disacryl and an other polyacrolein, prepared by a redox-polyme…

Training young adults with intellectual disability to read critically on the internet.

2019

Background Young people with intellectual disability (ID) are becoming frequent Internet users, but they present difficulties selecting reliable Internet sources. Methods The present authors tested an instructional programme aimed at increasing skills to evaluate information from the Internet of 33 young adult students with intellectual disability enrolled in special needs education (19.4 years). The programme was composed of different web pages that provided conflicting views on a controversial topic. Students participated in small group discussions supported with Wh-question graphic organizers and contrasting cases during seven sessions. Results Differences between pre- and post-tests ind…
