Dynamic nuclear polarisation of biological matter

1986

Polarised targets as used in high energy physics experiments may be of considerable interest in biological structure research using polarized neutrons. So far, this promising method has been facing difficulties in getting reasonable polarization of the target nuclei. We report on a polarized "frozen spin" target which has been prepared from an enzyme dissolved in a mixture of heavy water and deuterated propanediol doped with a completely deuterated paramagnetic radical. Clusters of 700 protons defined by the structure of lysozyme embedded in a fully deuterated matrix were polarized to 75% within an hour by 4 mm microwave irradiation in a magnetic field of 2.5 tesla at a temperature of 0.3 K…

One-pion production in neutrino-nucleus collisions

2013

We use our model for neutrino pion production on the nucleon to study pion production on a nucleus. The model is conveniently modified to include in-medium corrections and its validity is extended up to 2 GeV neutrino energies by the inclusion of new resonant contributions in the production process. Our results are compared with recent MiniBooNE data measured in mineral oil. Our total cross sections are below data for neutrino energies above 1 GeV. As with other theoretical calculations, the agreement with data improves if we neglect pion final state interaction. This is also the case for differential cross sections convoluted over the neutrino flux.

Production of deuterons, tritons, 3He nuclei, and their antinuclei in pp collisions at √s = 0.9, 2.76, and 7 TeV

2018

Invariant differential yields of deuterons and antideuterons in p p collisions at √ s = 0.9, 2.76 and 7 TeV and the yields of tritons, 3 He nuclei, and their antinuclei at √ s = 7 TeV have been measured with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurements cover a wide transverse momentum ( p T ) range in the rapidity interval | y | < 0.5 , extending both the energy and the p T reach of previous measurements up to 3 GeV/ c for A = 2 and 6 GeV/ c for A = 3 . The coalescence parameters of (anti)deuterons and 3 ¯¯¯¯ He nuclei exhibit an increasing trend with p T and are found to be compatible with measurements in p A collisions at low p T and lower energies. The integrate…

Quadrupole splitting of Fe(II) spin crossover compounds study of temperature and pressure dependence and the implication for the interaction mechanism

1989

The temperature and pressure dependence of the quadrupole splitting ΔE Q of the 3/2→1/2 nuclear Mossbauer transition of57Fe in the spin crossover compounds [Fe x Zn1−x (2-pic)3]Cl2⋆EtOH and the deuterated analog [Fe x Zn1−x (2-pic-ND2)3] Cl2⋆EtOD (2-pic=2-picolylamine) have been studied. The change of ΔE Q can be linearly related to the defomation of the lattice as observed by X-ray measurements. The dependence of ΔE Q on temperatureT, pressurep, and the fraction γ of molecules in the electronic high spin state in the pure iron (x=1) compounds is therefore interpreted as a result of the change of the lattice contribution to the electric field gradient (EFG) at the nucleus only. The intrinsi…

Tritium retention in plasma facing materials of JET ITER-Like-Wall retrieved from the vacuum vessel in 2012 (ILW1), 2014 (ILW2) and 2016 (ILW3)

2021

Abstract ITER-Like-Wall (ILW) project has been carried out at Joint European Torus (JET) to test plasma facing materials relevant to International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor – ITER [1]. Limiters and an upper dump plate of the vacuum vessel are made of bulk beryllium tiles, whereas for the divertor bulk tungsten and tungsten-coated carbon fibre (CFC) composite tiles are used. During the shutdowns in ILW1 (2012), ILW2 (2014) and ILW3 (2016), selected beryllium tiles were removed from the vacuum vessel. In this study, tiles from three positions were analysed, and analysis results were compared regarding both the tile position in the vacuum vessel and differences in the exploitation con…

Experimental Determination of Four-Time Stimulated Echoes in Liquids, Colloidal Suspensions, and Crystals

1998

Four-time stimulated echo experiments have been used to monitor the temporal evolution of the reorientation rates of deuterated molecules or colloidal suspensions. We present extended phase cycles for this seven-pulse experiment. In order to test its performance three vastly different materials are chosen. These include a crystal in which the molecules carry out well-defined 180 degrees flips and a supercooled liquid characterized by a distribution of jump angles centered around 10 degrees. As an example for rotational diffusion, data on a concentrated suspension of polystyrene spheres in a viscous medium are presented. Copyright 1998 Academic Press.

Neutron yield from carbon, light- and heavy-water thick targets irradiated by 40MeV deuterons

2009

Abstract Angular and energy distributions of neutrons produced by the interaction of deuterons of 40 MeV in carbon, light- and heavy-water targets, in which they are stopped, have been measured by the activation method. A discrepancy with a time-of-flight measurement for d + C has been found. The results are compared with a Monte-Carlo calculation and are discussed in the frame of building a deuteron-to-neutron converter for the SPIRAL2 radioactive ion-beam facility.

Multiplicity dependence of (anti-)deuteron production in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV

2019

In this letter, the production of deuterons and anti-deuterons in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV is studied as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity density at mid-rapidity with the ALICE detector at the LHC. Production yields are measured at mid-rapidity in five multiplicity classes and as a function of the deuteron transverse momentum (pT). The measurements are discussed in the context of hadron–coalescence models. The coalescence parameter B2, extracted from the measured spectra of (anti-)deuterons and primary (anti-)protons, exhibits no significant pT-dependence for pT < 3 GeV/c, in agreement with the expectations of a simple coalescence picture. At fixed transverse momentum per …

Light baryons and their electromagnetic interactions in the covariant constituent quark model

2012

We extend the confined covariant constituent quark model that was previously developed by us for mesons to the baryon sector. In our numerical calculation we use the same values for the constituent quark masses and the infrared cutoff as have been previously used in the meson sector. In a first application we describe the static properties of the proton and neutron, and the $\Lambda$-hyperon (magnetic moments and charge radii) and the behavior of the nucleon form factors at low momentum transfers. We discuss in some detail the conservation of gauge invariance of the electromagnetic transition matrix elements in the presence of a nonlocal coupling of the baryons to the three constituent quar…
