Relativistic Effects and Two-Body Currents inH2(e→,e′p)nUsing Out-of-Plane Detection

2001

Measurements of the (2)H((-->)e,e(')p)n reaction were performed with the out-of-plane magnetic spectrometers (OOPS) at the MIT-Bates Linear Accelerator. The longitudinal-transverse, f(LT) and f(')(LT), and the transverse-transverse, f(TT), interference responses at a missing momentum of 210 MeV/c were simultaneously extracted in the dip region at Q2 = 0.15 (GeV/c)(2). In comparison to models of deuteron electrodisintegration, the data clearly reveal strong effects of relativity and final-state interactions and the importance of two-body meson-exchange currents and isobar configurations. We demonstrate that such effects can be disentangled by extracting these responses using the novel out-of…

Static freezing transition at a finite temperature in a quasi-one-dimensional deuteron glass.

1996

The dipolar freezing process of a quasi-one-dimensional betaine deuteron glass was studied using linear and nonlinear dielectric spectroscopy. The linear response as measured for frequencies $5\mathrm{mHz}l\ensuremath{\nu}l200\mathrm{MHz}$ was analyzed using the recently invented $\ensuremath{\delta}$ plot, providing evidence for a static freezing transition near 30 K. Measurements of the ergodic to nonergodic transition as well as of the incipient divergence of the nonlinear susceptibility yield independent confirmation of this quasistatic freezing transition temperature. The critical exponent describing the nonlinear behavior is found to be $\ensuremath{\gamma}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\p…

Dispersive evaluation of the Lamb shift in muonic deuterium from chiral effective field theory

2020

We merge the dispersive relation approach and the ab initio method to compute nuclear structure corrections to the Lamb shift in muonic deuterium. We calculate the deuteron response functions and corresponding uncertainties up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory and compare our results to selected electromagnetic data to test the validity of the theory. We then feed response functions calculated over a wide range of kinematics to the dispersion-theory formalism and show that an improved accuracy is obtained compared to that with the use of available experimental data in the dispersive analysis. This opens up the possibility of applying this hybrid metho…

Probing Long-Range Neutrino-Mediated Forces with Atomic and Nuclear Spectroscopy.

2017

The exchange of a pair of low-mass neutrinos between electrons, protons and neutrons produces a "long-range" $1/r^5$ potential, which can be sought for in phenomena originating on the atomic and sub-atomic length scales. We calculate the effects of neutrino-pair exchange on transition and binding energies in atoms and nuclei. In the case of atomic s-wave states, there is a large enhancement of the induced energy shifts due to the lack of a centrifugal barrier and the highly singular nature of the neutrino-mediated potential. We derive limits on neutrino-mediated forces from measurements of the deuteron binding energy and transition energies in positronium, muonium, hydrogen and deuterium, a…

Nuclear structure contribution to the Lamb shift in muonic deuterium

2013

We consider the two-photon exchange contribution to the $2P-2S$ Lamb shift in muonic deuterium in the framework of forward dispersion relations. The dispersion integrals are evaluated using experimental data on elastic deuteron form factors and inelastic electron-deuteron scattering, both in the quasielastic and hadronic range. The subtraction constant that is required to ensure convergence of the dispersion relation for the forward Compton amplitude $T_1(\nu,Q^2)$ is related to the deuteron magnetic polarizability $\beta(Q^2)$. Based on phenomenological information, we obtain for the Lamb shift $\Delta E_{2P-2S}=2.01\pm0.74$ meV. The main source of the uncertainty of the dispersion analysi…

Quasi-elastic polarization-transfer measurements on the deuteron in anti-parallel kinematics

2019

We present measurements of the polarization-transfer components in the H2(e→,e′p→) reaction, covering a previously unexplored kinematic region with large positive (anti-parallel) missing momentum, pmiss, up to 220MeV/c, and Q2=0.65 (GeV/c)2. These measurements, performed at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI), were motivated by theoretical calculations which predict small final-state interaction (FSI) effects in these kinematics, making them favorable for searching for medium modifications of bound nucleons in nuclei. We find in this kinematic region that the measured polarization-transfer components Px and Pz and their ratio agree with the theoretical calculations, which use free-proton form factor…

Measurements of the induced polarization in the quasi-elastic A(e,e′p→) process in non-coplanar kinematics

2020

Abstract We report measurements of the induced polarization P → of protons knocked out from 2H and 12C via the A ( e , e ′ p → ) reaction. We have studied the dependence of P → on two kinematic variables: the missing momentum p miss and the “off-coplanarity” angle ϕ p q between the scattering and reaction planes. For the full 360° range in ϕ p q , both the normal ( P y ) and, for the first time, the transverse ( P x ) components of the induced polarization were measured with respect to the coordinate system associated with the scattering plane. P x vanishes in coplanar kinematics, however in non-coplanar kinematics, it is on the same scale as P y . We find that the dependence on ϕ p q is si…

Towards electronic g-factor measurements in medium-heavy hydrogen-like and lithium-like ions

2005

Abstract Measurements of the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron bound in hydrogen-like ions with spinless nuclei have proven to be highly sensitive tests of corresponding calculations based on bound-state quantum electrodynamics. Measurements performed on H-like carbon 12C5+ and oxygen 16O7+ together with bound-state QED calculations on the same level of accuracy have achieved sensitivities around 0.25% of the QED bound state contributions to the calculated electronic g-factors of these ions. Currently, a similar experiment on hydrogen-like calcium 40Ca19+, lithium-like calcium 40Ca17+ and other medium-heavy ions is being prepared, which is capable of increasing this sensitivity on t…
