On the quasi-elastic neutrino reaction in deuterium in the forward direction
1972
Forward cross-section of the reaction nu +d to mu /sup -/+p+p is studied under different assumptions. It is shown that a value E/sup -2 / (d sigma /d Omega ) approximately=0.27*10/sup -38/ cm/sup 2//sr GeV /sup 2/ is expected independent of the incident neutrino spectrum shape. Relativistic effects and one-pion exchange contributions have been estimated. (10 refs).
Compton scattering from the free and bound proton at backward angles above π-threshold
1999
Differential cross sections for Compton scattering from the free proton at Theta(gamma)(lab) = 130.7 degrees in the energy region from 200 MeV to 410 MeV and far quasi-free Compton scattering from the proton bound in the deuteron at Theta(gamma)(lab) = 148.8 degrees in the energy region from 200 MeV to 290 MeV have been measured. The free proton data are in agreement with dispersion-theory predictions based on standard parameters. The difference of the proton polarizabilities has been extracted from the quasi-free data. Our result, - = [9.1 +/- 1.7(stat + syst) +/- 1.2(mod)] x 10(-4) fm(3), is in reasonable agreement with the world average of the free proton data if the backward spin polari…
The polarized double cell target of the SMC
1999
The polarized target of the Spin Muon Collaboration at CERN was used for deep inelastic muon scattering experiments during 1993-1996 with a polarized muon beam to investigate the spin structure of the nucleon. Most of the experiments were carried out with longitudinal target polarization and 190 GeV muons, and some were done with transverse polarization and 100 GeV muons. Protons as well as deuterons were polarized by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) in three kinds of solid materials - butanol, ammonia, and deuterated butanol - with maximum degrees of polarization of 94%, 91% and 60%, respectively. Considerable attention was paid to the accuracies of the NMR polarization measurements and …
Low-lying excitations in the odd-odd nucleus154Eu
1988
The doubly odd nucleus154Eu was produced during in-beam bombardments of a154Sm target with3He and deuteron beams at 27 and 10 MeV. The resulting gamma-rays were investigated using prompt and delayed gamma-gamma-coincidence equipment. The half-life of the isomeric 2+ level was determined as 2.2±0.1 μs. The partial level scheme, including numerous previously unidentified excitations, can be divided into two separate groups of levels. The results provide evidence for the existence of a very regular ground band and two rather regularK=3 level structures, whose configurations are closely related to it. In addition, several rotational sequences built on the band heads with otherK values have been…
On the (ΔΔ)-component of the deuteron
1974
Abstract The (ΔΔ)-component of the deuteron is investigated using π- and ϱ-exchange for the (NN → ΔΔ)-transition interaction. The depedence of the strength of the (ΔΔ)-component on thetype of regularization, the cut-off parameter and the normal deuteron wave functions is discussed. Inclusion of the ϱ-exchange leads to a weaker dependence on the cut-off parameter and to a smaller (ΔΔ)-admixture probability of 0.7 to 1.2 percent depending on the normal deuteron wave function for a cut-off parameter Λ = 5 fm−1.

Structure of the Triplet of low-lying states in101Mo
1991
The properties of the triplet of low-lying states in101Mo have been studied through spectroscopy of theγ radiation following thermal neutron capture in100Mo and β− decay of101Nb and through a measurement of the proton angular distributions in the100Mo(d,p) reaction with 14 MeV deuteron energy. The half-lives of the 13.5 keV state and the 57.0 keV 5/2+ state have been measured as 226(7) and 133(7)ns, respectively. These values and the quadrupole/dipole mixing ratios of the 13.5 keV and 43.5 keV transitions yield spin and parity 3/2+ for the 13.5 keV level. The E2 components in the 13.5 (3/2+ →1/2+) and 43.5 keV (5/2+→3/2+) transitions are ≦ 8·10−4 and 54(9)%, respectively. The possibility of…

Neutron yield from a thick target irradiated by 90MeV protons
2005
In the context or the design of an intense source of low and intermediate energy, neutrons, the angular and energy distributions of neutrons produced in the interaction of 90 MeV protons in a C-12 target, in which the protons are stopped, have been measured by time-of-flight and activation techniques, As compared to C-12 the yield is less than a factor two higher, while it is somewhat less than for a Be-9 target. Measurement of trace impurities in ultra pure hydrogen and deuterium at the parts-per-billion level using gas chromatography
2018
Abstract A series of muon experiments at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland deploy ultra-pure hydrogen active targets. A new gas impurity analysis technique was developed, based on conventional gas chromatography, with the capability to measure part-per-billion (ppb) traces of nitrogen and oxygen in hydrogen and deuterium. Key ingredients are a cryogenic admixture accumulation, a directly connected sampling system and a dedicated calibration setup. The dependence of the measured concentration on the sample volume was investigated, confirming that all impurities from the sample gas are collected in the accumulation column and measured with the gas chromatograph. The system was calibr…
