Evaluation of the Possible Contribution of Antioxidants Administration in Metabolic Syndrome

The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is common, and its associated risk burdens of diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are a major public health problem. The hypothesis that main constituent parameters of the MetS share common pathophysiologic mechanisms provides a conceptual framework for the future research. Exercise and weight loss can prevent insulin resistance and reduce the risk of diseases associated with the MetS. Overexpression of G6PD as a model of robustness

Introduction Frailty is a major geriatric syndrome that has been associated to oxidative stress. The antioxidant system is largely based on the reducing power of NADPH, whose levels are mainly determined by the enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD). Material and methods Using old female Tg-mice overexpressing G6PD (18 to 26 months old), we measured frailty and different muscle parameters: oxidative stress, cross-sectional area (CSA), markers regulating protein synthesis, mitochondrial dynamics, and apoptosis. Interventions in School Settings for Students With ADHD

This article consists of a review of 16 research studies on treatments in school settings for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) carried out in the last decade. It includes both simple interventions and multicomponent interventions where different techniques are combined. Based on this revision, the conclusion is drawn that, based on the evidence, school-based treatments for ADHD are effective in the short run for reducing disruptive behaviors and improving on-task behavior and academic performance of children with ADHD. Effects of l-Carnitine in Patients with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Review of Clinical Studies

Carnitine is an amino acid derivative, which plays several important roles in human physiology, in the central nervous system, and for mitochondrial metabolism, in particular. Altered carnitine metabolic routes have been associated with a subgroup of patients with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and could add to the pathophysiology associated with these disorders. We review the current evidence about the clinical effects of carnitine administration in ASD in both non-syndromic forms and ASD associated with genetic disorders. AbstractAmphiregulin (AR) involvement in liver fibrogenesis and hepatic stellate cells (HSC) regulation is under study. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its more severe form non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) may progress to cirrhosis and hepatocellular cancer (HCC).
