Validation and Extension of the Usability Heuristics for Mobile Map Applications
2016
Heuristic usability evaluation is light but efficient method for finding usability problems. In this paper, we report the process of validation and further development of the previously introduced usability heuristics for mobile map applications. The validation began by testing the heuristics by 58 evaluators who used them for usability evaluation of four different map applications. The evaluators also filled a questionnaire about the understandability of the heuristics. The amount, severity and quality of the problems found with the heuristics were reviewed and the heuristics’ understandability analyzed. As a result, it was shown that the heuristics were efficient for finding usability pro…
Modeling the Sustainable Educational Process for Pupils from Vulnerable Groups in Critical Situations: COVID-19 Context in Lithuania, Latvia, and Est…
2022
The critical situation in education caused by COVID-19 has significantly reduced the involvement of pupils from vulnerable groups, particularly those with low learning achievements. The aim of this study is to reveal the modeling of the sustainable educational process and the factors that ensure optimal learning achievements of pupils from vulnerable groups in general education schools in critical educational transformation situations. To reveal the factors ensuring the sustainability of educational processes, this study was conducted in three Baltic countries (Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia) involving 1432 subject teachers from public education schools. The results of the study highlight t…
Interactions, spillovers de connaissance et croissance des économies modernes. Faut-il préférer la globalisation ou la proximité géographique ?
2009
Globalisation and metropolisation in modern economies induce some locational strategies of knowledge based activities towards cities and deeply increase trade and move of ideas across cities. In that context, we study the way knowledge spillovers have influenced the economic growth of 82 European Metropolises over the 1990-2005 period. We model knowledge spillovers across cities according to three specific interaction patterns depending either on geography or on global advanced services or thought a combination of these patterns. We show that the mixed pattern matters the best for economic growth of cities in Europe.
The Role of Instruments of the Common Agricultural Policy to Ensure Stability of Commercial Agricultural Holdins and Development of Rual Areas A Case…
2018
The aim of the paper is to show the role of users of commercial agricultural holdings in the development of local areas and to select instruments of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), which are significant in building developmental potentials of agriculture and rural areas in Opole Province. The modernization processes going on in commercial agriculture result in its de-placement. Thanks to instruments of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) there follows a re-rooting of agriculture in the territory. On the basis of survey research carried out in 2014 in 100 commercial agricultural holdings based in Opole Province, which were selected for the purpose, the authors present an analysis of f…
Identity development meets emotional stability : transcending borders through music therapy with an intercultural group of women : a case study
2016
Based on previous investigation, research has revealed the implications of music therapy in women, intercultural groups, and the cultivation of identity and emotional stability. However, the research conducted on the amalgamation of these factors is deficient. The purpose of this case study is to explore the effects of music therapy on the emotional stabilization and development of identity in an intercultural group of women. The umbrella terms of identity development and emotional stability will be dissected based on the sub-themes that have emerged from the therapeutic needs of the intercultural group of individuals involved. Six women from The Netherlands, Iran, China, Russia, Germany, a…
Toimijuus ja asiantuntijaksi kasvaminen monimediaisessa kielenopettamisessa
2011
This case study investigates the role of agency in the development of two students’ expertise during their participation in the year-long KOO-KIT program (Language Technology for Language Teachers) for pre-service language teachers at the Centre for Applied Language Studies of the University of Jyväskylä in the 2000s. The curriculum of the program was organized around project-based learning, with theoretical and pedagogical lessons and hands-on technology courses alternating with practical team work in web-based design. The data consist of the teachers’ observations and narrative assessments of the students’ performance, and the students’ self-reports during the one-year course. The finding…
Variation in the Sizes of Chthamalid Barnacle Post-Settlement Cyprids on European Shores
2001
As part of a wider study on the settlement and recruitment of Chthamalus spp. in Europe, this study investigated whether chthamalid cyprids can be separated by length on a European scale. Variation in cyprid length with latitude and temporal variation at selected localities were also examined. The lengths of cyprids collected between 1996-1999 on nine rocky shores in Europe are reported. Elminius modestus cyprids were found only at Roscoff, NW France and could be distinguished due to their Carapace shape and length. They showed a unimodal length distribution, measuring between 450 and 625 mum, with no variation in length between the two sampling dates (1997 and 1998). Based on carapace shap…
Teenage motherhood and the evaluation of relationships in the family of origin in mothers in their early adulthood
2019
BackgroundThe objective of this study was to evaluate the relationships in the family of origin in a sample of mothers who had their first child as teenagers (off-time motherhood). We also sought to answer the following question: are there any differences in the evaluation of relationships between mothers who gave birth to their first child in their teens and those who had their first baby during women’s best fertility age (on-time motherhood)? For women, the optimum reproductive age is anywhere between 20 and 30 years of age.Participants and procedureThe study looked at 60 mothers, including 30 off-time mothering and 30 on-time mothering. Two research tools were used in the study: an own s…
Actual and Perceived Motor Competence, Cardiorespiratory Fitness, Physical Activity, and Weight Status in Schoolchildren : Latent Profile and Transit…
2022
Engagement in physical activity plays a central role in the prevention and treatment of childhood overweight/obesity. However, some children may lack the skills and confidence to be physically active. This 3-year follow-up study aimed to form profiles based on cardiorespiratory fitness, actual motor competence, perceived motor competence, physical activity, and weight status, and to examine if these profiles remain stable from late childhood to early adolescence. All these variables were annually assessed in 1,162 Finnish schoolchildren (girls = 583 and boys = 564, Mage = 11.27 ± 0.32 years). Latent profile analysis was used to identify profiles and latent transition analysis to examine the…
The developmental dynamics of task-avoidant behavior and math performance in kindergarten and elementary school
2012
Besides cognitive factors, children's learning at school may be influenced by more dynamic phenomena, such as motivation and achievement-related task-avoidant behavior. The present study examined the developmental dynamics of task-avoidant behavior and math performance from kindergarten to Grade 4. A total of 225 children were tested for their arithmetic skills in kindergarten and in Grades 1, 2, and 4 of elementary school. Children's task-avoidant behavior in learning situations was rated by their teachers. The results of latent growth curve analyses showed that math performance and task-avoidant behavior develop in tandem: an increase in task-avoidant behavior was related to less improvem…
