Numerical Simulation of Thermal Effects in Electric Circuits via Energy Transport equations

2006

In this work we present the coupling of stationary energy-transport (ET) equations with Modified Nodal Analysis (MNA)-equations to model electric circuits containing semiconductor devices. The one-dimensional ET-equations are discretised in space by an exponential fitting mixed hybrid finite element approach to ensure current continuity and positivity of charge carriers. The discretised ET-equations are coupled to MNA-equations and the resulting system is solved with backwarddifference formulas. Numerical examples are shown for a test circuit containing a pn-diode, and the results are compared to those achieved using the drift-diffusion model to describe the semiconductor devices in the cir…

All-optical signal processing at ultra-low powers in bottle microresonators using the Kerr effect.

2010

We present experimental results on nonlinear, ultra-low power photonics applications based on a silica whispering-gallery-mode microresonator. Our bottle microresonator combines an ultrahigh quality factor of Q10(8) with a small mode volume V. The resulting Q(2)/V-ratio is among the highest realized for optical microresonators and allows us to observe bistable behavior at very low powers. We report single-wavelength all-optical switching via the Kerr effect at a record-low threshold of 50 microW. Moreover, an advantageous mode geometry enables the coupling of two tapered fiber waveguides to a bottle mode in an add-drop configuration. This allows us to route a CW optical signal between both …

Synchronization of coupled single-electron circuits based on nanoparticles and tunneling junctions

2009

We explore theoretically the synchronization properties of a device composed of coupled single-electron circuits whose building blocks are nanoparticles interconnected with tunneling junctions. Elementary nanoscillators can be achieved by a single-electron tunneling cell where the relaxation oscillation is induced by the tunneling. We develop a model to describe the synchronization of the nanoscillators and present sample calculations to demonstrate that the idea is feasible and could readily find applications. Instead of considering a particular system, we analyze the general properties of the device making use of an ideal model that emphasizes the essential characteristics of the concept.…

Functionalization of Graphene with Molecules and/or Nanoparticles for Advanced Applications

2019

Graphene is considered the material of the third millennium, due to its extraordinary electronic and mechanical properties, and due to the possibility to modulate its conductivity, flexibility, elasticity, transparency, and biocompatibility by bottom-up approach. The possibility to gather the proper- ties of graphene and graphene oxide with those of functional moieties or nanoparticles is herein reviewed. The synthetic approaches proposed, either covalent or noncovalent, are aimed to tune appropriately graphene’s properties for the realization of materials for advanced uses, such as bio- medical applications, sensors, catalysis, and energy devices. In particular, methods based on covalent l…

Universality of the Triangular Theory of Love: Adaptation and Psychometric Properties of the Triangular Love Scale in 25 Countries

2021

The Triangular Theory of Love (measured with Sternberg’s Triangular Love Scale – STLS) is a prominent theoretical concept in empirical research on love. To expand the culturally homogeneous body of previous psychometric research regarding the STLS, we conducted a large-scale cross-cultural study with the use of this scale. In total, we examined more than 11,000 respondents, but as a result of applied exclusion criteria, the final analyses were based on a sample of 7332 participants from 25 countries (from all inhabited continents). We tested configural invariance, metric invariance, and scalar invariance, all of which confirmed the cultural universality of the theoretical construct of love …

Autoficción, historia y mito en la narrativa del subcomandante Marcos

2018

The uprising of 1994 by the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) in Mexico, represented not only a political and military event but also a discursive one. In this study, I analyse the ways in which historical and factual dimensions are intertwined with the personal accounts written by  Subcomandante Marcos ; military leader and spokesperson of the EZLN. The deputy commander’s writing poses specific difficulties, given that he wrote directly from the frontline and under the urgency of this historical period. Such writing conditions stimulate us to examine the transitional modalities between live memory and textual representation, and to look at the genres and rhetorical devices that are…

Describing the voice of online bullying: An analysis of stance and voice type in YouTube comments

2022

Abstract In this article, I analyze the expression of stance in YouTube comments responding to a speech by Greta Thunberg addressing the 2019 United Nations Climate Action Summit. I use quantitative and qualitative analysis of explicit stance features (including attitude markers, boosters, hedges, self-mentions, and reader addresses) in order to characterize the voice type that commenters construe and examine how this voice type potentially functions as a tool for social influence. The analysis shows that the comments include continual emphatic and emotive attitude marking, almost exclusively evaluating Thunberg herself (e.g., her authenticity, cognitive ability, gender and youth), rather t…

Multimodal and Agent-Based Human–Computer Interaction in Cultural Heritage Applications: an Overview

2010

One of the most recent and interesting applications of human–computer interaction technologies is the provision of advanced information services within public places, such as cultural heritage sites or schools and university campuses. In such contexts, concurrent technologies used in smart mobile devices can be used to satisfy the mobility need of users allowing them to access relevant resources in a context-dependent manner. Of course, most of the constraints to be taken into account when designing a pervasive information providing system are given by the actual domain where they are deployed.
