Explosive crystallization in amorphous CuTi thin films: a molecular dynamics study
2019
Abstract Molecular dynamic simulation was used to study mechanism of self-propagating waves of explosive crystallization (devitrification) in the CuTi metallic glass. Processes in thin rectangular samples composed of one to two million atoms were simulated and compared with experimental data. It was shown that the nucleation of primary crystalline clusters occurs homogeneously due to spontaneous fluctuations of atomic structure; the clusters not
Spark Plasma Sintering of Metallic Glasses
2019
Spark plasma sintering (SPS) of metallic glasses (MG) can be quite different from sintering crystalline metallic alloys. Indeed, MG behave differently with increasing temperature, as they encounter a glass transition and devitrification. Their shaping can thus be compared to what can be performed on thermoplastic polymers. SPS is a promising way to prepare bulk parts from amorphous powders, since it allows very fast heating and cooling rates. It gives an advantage to avoid or limit devitrification of the amorphous phase upon the thermal cycle. However, diffusion mechanisms, which generally control densification, are activated at temperatures that are not compatible with MG structural integr…
Halogen (Cl, F) release during explosive, effusive, and intrusive phases of the 2011 rhyolitic eruption at Cordón Caulle volcano (Chile)
2019
We investigate sulphur, chlorine and fluorine release during explosive, effusive and intrusive phases of the 2011 Cordon Caulle eruption, with a focus on halogen devolatilization. Petrological analysis shows halogen release to have been promoted by isobaric crystallization in slowly-cooled magma that was emplaced in a lava flow and sub-vent intrusion. Fluorine in particular mobilized only after extensive groundmass crystallization and incipient devitrification. By 2017, the gas emitted from vent-proximal fumaroles had hydrothermal compositions, with HCl/HF ratios decreasing with decreasing temperature. We estimate that the eruption could eventually emit up to 0.84 Mt of SO2, 6.3 Mt of HCl, …
ber den ?Hygrophyllit? im Rotliegenden des Saar-Nahe-Gebietes, ein Beitrag zur Diagenese pyroklastischer Gesteine
1971
In certain areas rhyolitic tuffs of the Upper Rotliegend include a greenish, talc-like substance, called “Hygrophyllit”. It has been found too at the base of the Rotliegend in the Saarland. It is shown, that Hygrophyllit corresponds to decomposed pumice, related to the acid permian volcanism. X-ray, DTA and chemical investigations yielded, that Hygrophyllit consists essentially of a mixed layer mica-Ca-montmorillonite with random interstratification and previously about 33 % expandable layers. In consequence there are in the Rotliegend of the Saar-Nahe-Basin three different diagenetic developments of acid pyroclastic rocks: The formation of Kaolinite in the Lower Rotliegend, of devitrificat…
Devitrification of the Kob-Andersen glass former: Competition with the locally favored structure
2018
Abstract Supercooled liquids are kinetically trapped materials in which the transition to a thermodynamically more stable state with long-range order is strongly suppressed. To assess the glass-forming abilities of a liquid empirical rules exist, but a comprehensive microscopic picture of devitrification is still missing. Here we study the crystallization of a popular model glass former, the binary Kob-Andersen mixture, in small systems. We perform trajectory sampling employing the population of the locally favored structure as order parameter. While for large population a dynamical phase transition has been reported, here we show that biasing towards a small population of locally favored s…
Li2OSiO2Al2O3MeIIO Glass-Ceramic Systems for Tile Glaze Applications
1991
In order to verify the possibility of using glass-ceramic materials as tile coatings, the devitrification processes of three industrial formulations belonging to the Li2O─Al2O3─SiO2 glass-ceramic system were investigated by differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, and IR spectroscopy. Compositional variations were made by addition of large amounts of MgO or CaO or PbO (ZnO) oxides as well as through smaller additions of other oxides. In these systems the surface crystallization contributes appreciably to the bulk crystallization mechanism. All the systems investigated show a high tendency toward crystallization even at very high heating rates, devel…
