First Perigondwanan record of actinolepids (Vertebrata: Placodermi: Arthrodira) from the Lochkovian (Early Devonian) of Spain and its palaeobiogeogra…
2011
Different palaeogeographic models have been proposed for the position of Laurussia ( including Baltica) and Gondwana-derived microcontinents ( including Ibero-Armorica) during Ordovician to Late Carboniferous times. Principal differences concern the presence and duration of a large ocean, the Rheic Ocean, acting as a faunal barrier between these areas. The timing of the collision of Laurussia with Gondwana and/or Gondwana-derived terranes continues to be debated. Here we present new faunal data revealing close biogeographical relations between Ibero-Armorica ("Perigondwanan" or Gondwanan derivate terranes) and Podolia (SE margin of Baltica, in Laurussia). The placoderm assemblage found in t…
Emsian (Lower Devonian) conodonts from the Daliantang Formation at Daliantang, southeastern Yunnan, China
2021
Abstract The lower/upper Emsian boundary witnessed prominent diversification of biostratigraphically important genera Polygnathus Hinde, Caudicriodus Bultynck, and Latericriodus Muller. In contrast, conodonts previously reported around this boundary from the South China Block were characterized by relatively low species or subspecies diversity, and only a few widely distributed and extensively studied zone-defining taxa were recorded. In this paper, conodonts from the Daliantang Formation at the Daliantang section (Guangnan, southeastern Yunnan), one of the representative sections of the transitional facies between the benthic Xiangzhou facies and the pelagic Nandan facies, are investigated…
Givetian (Middle Devonian) historical bio- and chronostratigraphical subdivision based on conodonts
2017
The conodont record supports the intended threefold subdivision of the Givetian as envisaged by the International Subcommision on Devonian Stratigraphy into Lower, Middle and Upper Givetian substages. The lower boundary of the Lower Givetian Stage coincides with the lower boundary of the Givetian and it is recognized with the entry of Polygnathus hemiansatus. The lower boundary of the Middle Givetian is identified with the entry of either P. varcus or P. rhenanus. The base of the Upper Givetian is defined with the entry of Schmidtognathus hermanni. The historical review shows the conceptual evolution from a stage with just one and a half zones to one with ten zones that are the basis for th…
First occurrence of fossil vertebrates from the Carboniferous of Colombia
2020
Data concerning Paleozoic vertebrates from the South American continent are still scarce. In Colombia, occurrences were until now restricted to the Late Devonian fish assemblage from Floresta and, ...
Permanent Genetic Resources added to Molecular Ecology Resources Database 1 October 2009–30 November 2009.
2010
5 pages; International audience; This article documents the addition of 411 microsatellite marker loci and 15 pairs of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) sequencing primers to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database. Loci were developed for the following species: Acanthopagrus schlegeli, Anopheles lesteri, Aspergillus clavatus, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus oryzae, Aspergillus terreus, Branchiostoma japonicum, Branchiostoma belcheri, Colias behrii, Coryphopterus personatus, Cynogolssus semilaevis, Cynoglossus semilaevis, Dendrobium officinale, Dendrobium officinale, Dysoxylum malabaricum, Metrioptera roeselii, Myrmeciza exsul, Ochotona thibetana, Neosartorya fisc…
New insights into Late Devonian vertebrates and associated fauna from the Cuche Formation (Floresta Massif, Colombia)
2019
New vertebrate remains are reported from the Late Devonian (?Frasnian) Cuche Formation of northeastern Colombia, including a new taxon of antiarch placoderm (Colombialepis villarroeli, gen. et sp. nov., previously reported as Asterolepis) and a new taxon of arthrodiran placoderm (Colombiaspis rinconensis, gen. et sp. nov.). We also report evidence of a stegotrachelid actinopterygian, a diplacanthid acanthodian (cf. Florestacanthus morenoi), a second antiarch placoderm (Bothriolepis sp.), a putative megalichthyid, and a putative tristichopterid. The absence of typical Euramerican markers, e.g., Asterolepis and Strepsodus, in this assemblage suggests that faunal interchange between Euramerica…
Scheelite-Bearing Metalliferous Sequences of the Peloritani Mountains, Northeastern Sicily (with some Remarks on Tungsten Metallogenesis in the Calab…
1988
The Peloritani Mountains (Northeastern Sicily) are part of a segment of the Hercynian chain recognized in the Calabrian-Peloritan Arc, geotectonically defined by a pre-Hercynian crystalline basement (Aspromonte Nappe + Mandanici Unit) overthrust and overturned on its Paleozoic (Cambro-Ordovician up to Devonian Carboniferous) volcanosedimentary cover. Tungsten (scheelite) and associated polymetallic stratabound ores, more or less intensely affected by the pre-Hercynian and Hercynian tectonometamorphic events, are confined to the pre-Hercynian basement. In particular, the most significant scheelite-tourmaline (arsenopyrite) and scheelite-carbonate-quartz (albite) mineralizations could be cons…
A near-tetrapod from the Baltic Middle Devonian
2000
The tetrapodomorph sarcopterygian Livoniana multidentata gen. et sp. nov. is described on the basis of lower jaw fragments from the Middle Devonian(late Givetian) of Latvia and Estonia. It possesses a suite of derived characters previously only known from tetrapods, which first appear in the late Devonian (late Frasnian), and a phylogenetic analysis places it on the internode between Panderichthys and the base of the Tetrapoda. The analysis also reveals that the ‘Elpistostegalia’ are paraphyletic to Tetrapoda, with Elpistostege closer to tetrapods than is Panderichthys. Owing to incompleteness of the material, there is almost no overlap between the data sets for ElpistostegeLivoniana; the a…
Diagénesis, análisis de procedencia y ambiente tectónico de rocas siliciclásticas. Un caso de estudio en el Devónico Superior de la Cordillera Ibéric…
2022
This paper describes the petrography and infers the provenance of siliciclastic rocks from the Upper Devonian of the Iberian Chains (Tabuenca, NE Spain), and outlines the tectonic setting associated with the Ebro Massif. These Devonian deposits are constituted by four different siliciclastic units: the Rodanas, Bolloncillos, Hoya and Huechaseca Formations. The provenance and diagenesis of over 400 sedimentary rocks samples are studied with a combination of petrographic polarizing microscope, scanning electron microscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence and X-ray diffraction. In this sense, AAS and XRF analysis were used to determine the content of Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Na, K an…
Bite marks as evidence of predation in early vertebrates
2009
Study of lifetime bite traces on agnathans and fish (or gnathostomes) from Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia and north-western and central European Russia reveals evidence of predator–prey relationships in communities of Devonian age. Numerous bite traces on skeletal parts of agnathan pteraspidiforms and psammosteiforms, placoderm arthrodires and antiarchs and sarcopterygian porolepiforms and osteolepiforms are described. Evidence of healing shows that prey organisms responded to predation by reconstruction of damaged skeletal elements. Ichthyofaunistic analysis is used to establish possible predators. The most probable predators in the Middle and Late Devonian communities are sarcopterygian porolep…
