Doxorubicin (DOX) is known to induce serious cardiotoxicity, which is believed to be mediated by oxidative stress and complex interactions with iron. However, the relationship between iron and DOX-induced cardiotoxicity remains controversial and the role of iron chelation therapy to prevent cardiotoxicity is called into question. Purpose: Endoscopic dextranomer/hyaluronic acid copolymer (Dx/HA) injection is a safe and efficacious treatment option for vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in children. Endoscopic appearance, hydrodistention and amount of injected Dx/HA have been demonstrated not to be reliable predictors of outcome. The effect of the type of colloid on the efficacy of hypertonic saline colloid mixtures in hemorrhagic shock: dextran versus hydroxyethyl starch

Colloids increase and prolong the efficacy of hypertonic saline solutions in hemorrhagic shock. We compared the efficacy of dextran 60 and hydroxyethyl starch (HES) 200,000/0.5 at iso-oncotic concentrations of 6.5 or 6% in a 7.5% NaCI solution. Thirty-two rabbits were bled to maintain a mean arterial pressure at 35 mmHg. Twenty-five percent of the shed blood volume was replaced after 40 min by bolus infusion either with hypertonic dextran (HS-DEX) (n = 16) or with hypertonic hydroxyethyl starch (HS-HES) (n = 16). Different Modes of Regulation of the Expression of Dextransucrase in Leuconostoc lactis AV1n and Lactobacillus sakei MN1

Leuconostoc lactis AV1 strain isolated from a Tunisian avocado was characterized as a dextran producer. The promoter PdsrLL and the dsrLL gene encoding the DsrLL dextransucrase responsible for the dextran synthesis were transcriptionally fused to the mCherry coding gene generating the pRCR20 plasmid. Upon plasmid transfer, both AV1n and the dextran non-producing Leuconostoc mesenteroides CM70 became red due to expression of the mCherry from the PdsrLL-dsr-mrfp transcriptional fusion. Interaction of Heparins and Dextran Sulfates with a Mesoscopic Protein Nanopore

A mechanism of how polyanions influence the channel formed by Staphylococcus aureus alpha-hemolysin is described. We demonstrate that the probability of several types of polyanions to block the ion channel depends on the presence of divalent cations and the polyanion molecular weight and concentration. For heparins, a 10-fold increase in molecular weight decreases the half-maximal inhibitory concentration, IC(50), nearly 10(4)-fold. Dextran sulfates were less effective at blocking the channel. AbstractThe tyrosine kinase inhibitors sorafenib and sunitinib are approved for the treatment of patients with malignant diseases. To analyze the possible use of these compounds in combination with immunotherapeutic approaches, we analyzed the effects of both inhibitors on the immunostimulatory capacity of human dendritic cells (DCs) and the induction of primary immune responses in vivo. The stability and functional properties of proteoliposomes mixed with dextran derivatives bearing hydrophobic anchor groups

Liposomes composed of Escherichia coli phospholipid were coated with polysaccharides bearing hydrophobic palmitoyl anchors. The effect on the stability of liposomes without or with integral membrane proteins was investigated. A high concentration of hydrophobized dextrans protected the liposomes against detergent degradation, decreased the fluidity of the membranes, prevented fusion of the liposomes and enhanced their stability. Proteoliposomes containing beef heart cytochrome-c oxidase and the lactose transport carrier of E. coli were similarly affected by coating with the dextrans. Abstract Gastric mucosal damage induced by haemorrhagic shock in the anaesthetized rat has been evaluated by studying changes in capillary-to-lumen clearance of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labelled dextran. Haemorrhagic shock (20 min ischaemia + 20 min reperfusion) induced a significant increase in blood-to-lumen permeability to FITC-dextran of different molecular weight (10 000, 40 000 and 70 000) without modifying the macroscopic integrity of the gastric mucosa.
