Strutture intelaiate e tamponate in c.a.: sperimentazione e sviluppi nella modellazione analitica e numerica

2012

The presence of masonry infills in RC structures may have a fundamental role in response under seismic excitation, especially in the case of structures designed for gravity loads only and without seismic details. Studies of many authors show important modifications of response in terms of strength, stiffness, ductility and safety evaluation. The recent large development of nonlinear seismic, static and dynamical methods requires a relevant effort in modelling with a reliable, and at the same time easy for practical using, constitutive laws for infill panels. In this context the present study provide an experimental investigation on single story, single bay, half scale frames, fully infilled…

Supervised learning of time-independent Hamiltonians for gate design

2018

We present a general framework to tackle the problem of finding time-independent dynamics generating target unitary evolutions. We show that this problem is equivalently stated as a set of conditions over the spectrum of the time-independent gate generator, thus transforming the task to an inverse eigenvalue problem. We illustrate our methodology by identifying suitable time-independent generators implementing Toffoli and Fredkin gates without the need for ancillae or effective evolutions. We show how the same conditions can be used to solve the problem numerically, via supervised learning techniques. In turn, this allows us to solve problems that are not amenable, in general, to direct ana…

Regularization Method in Infrared Image Processing

2003

Abstract Infrared images often present distortions induced by the measurement system. Thus, image processing is a vital part of infrared measurements. A distortion model based on a convolution product is presented. Image restoration is an ill-posed problem and its solution can be obtained using regularization methods. In this paper, image restoration is performed using a variation of Tikhonov regularization that makes use of the particular form of the convolution kernel matrix, which is built as a block-circulant matrix that admits a diagonal form in the two-dimensional Fourier space. The restoration procedure is used to restore a knife-edge infrared source image.

On solving separable block tridiagonal linear systems using a GPU implementation of radix-4 PSCR method

2018

Partial solution variant of the cyclic reduction (PSCR) method is a direct solver that can be applied to certain types of separable block tridiagonal linear systems. Such linear systems arise, e.g., from the Poisson and the Helmholtz equations discretized with bilinear finite-elements. Furthermore, the separability of the linear system entails that the discretization domain has to be rectangular and the discretization mesh orthogonal. A generalized graphics processing unit (GPU) implementation of the PSCR method is presented. The numerical results indicate up to 24-fold speedups when compared to an equivalent CPU implementation that utilizes a single CPU core. Attained floating point perfor…

Fast Poisson solvers for graphics processing units

2013

Two block cyclic reduction linear system solvers are considered and implemented using the OpenCL framework. The topics of interest include a simplified scalar cyclic reduction tridiagonal system solver and the impact of increasing the radix-number of the algorithm. Both implementations are tested for the Poisson problem in two and three dimensions, using a Nvidia GTX 580 series GPU and double precision floating-point arithmetic. The numerical results indicate up to 6-fold speed increase in the case of the two-dimensional problems and up to 3- fold speed increase in the case of the three-dimensional problems when compared to equivalent CPU implementations run on a Intel Core i7 quad-core CPU…

Flexural behavior of hybrid glass beams with rectangular cross-sections

2018

Abstract An experimental investigation regarding the flexural and the shear behavior of glass beams with length 900, 1300, 1700 mm and rectangular cross-section is presented and discussed. Rectangular cross-sections were obtained by assembling three float glass panels of depth 200 mm and thickness 6 mm through an acrylic adhesive with an effective depth of 19.52 mm (6 + 0.76 + 6 + 0.76 + 6 mm). Some specimens were also reinforced internally with steel plates of thickness 6 mm and depth 25 mm and thickness 6 mm and plates of thickness 6 mm and depth 50 mm placed at the bottom portion of the beams for the entire length of the beams themselves. Three specimens for each investigated series were…

Simulation of laser generated ultrasound with application to defect detection

2008

Laser generated ultrasound holds substantial promise for use as a tool for defect detection in remote inspection thanks to its ability to produce frequencies in the MHz range, enabling fine spatial resolution of defects. Despite the potential impact of laser generated ultrasound in many areas of science and industry, robust tools for studying the phenomenon are lacking and thus limit the design and optimization of non-destructive testing and evaluation techniques. The laser generated ultrasound propagation in complex structures is an intricate phenomenon and is extremely hard to analyze. Only simple geometries can be studied analytically. Numerical techniques found in the literature have pr…

A more efficient second order blind identification method for separation of uncorrelated stationary time series

2016

The classical second order source separation methods use approximate joint diagonalization of autocovariance matrices with several lags to estimate the unmixing matrix. Based on recent asymptotic results, we propose a novel unmixing matrix estimator which selects the best lag set from a finite set of candidate sets specified by the user. The theory is illustrated by a simulation study. peerReviewed
