Artificial multiple criticality and phase equilibria: an investigation of the PC-SAFT approach
2005
The perturbed-chain statistical associating fluid theory (PC-SAFT) is studied for a wide range of temperature, T, pressure, p, and (effective) chain length, m, to establish the generic phase diagram of polymers according to this theory. In addition to the expected gas-liquid coexistence, two additional phase separations are found, termed "gas-gas" equilibrium (at very low densities) and "liquid-liquid" equilibrium (at densities where the system is expected to be solid already). These phase separations imply that in one-component polymer systems three critical points occur, as well as equilibria of three fluid phases at triple points. However, Monte Carlo simulations of the corresponding sys…
Phase diagrams calculated for sheared ternary polymer blends
1997
Abstract On the basis of the generalized Gibbs energy of mixing G γ (which is the sum of the Gibbs energy for zero shear and the energy the system stores in steady flow) phase diagrams were calculated as a function of shear rate γ for ternary model blends. This modelling uses simple equations for the description of the stagnant systems (Flory-Huggins) and for the contributions resulting from flow. Surface and alignment effects are neglected. A new procedure, which does not require the derivatives of G γ with respect to composition, was used to that end. Choosing typical values for the binary interaction parameters and molar masses, four classes of ternary systems were studied in greater det…
Blends of PDMS and random copolymers of dimethylsiloxane and methylphenylsiloxane: Phase separation in the quiescent state and under shear
1999
The miscibility of random copolymers (COP), consisting of dimethylsiloxane and methylphenylsiloxane units, with poly(dimethylsiloxane)s (PDMS) was studied in the absence and in the presence of shear experimentally as well as theoretically. Blends of COP 0.86 28 with PDMS 33 (subscripts: volume fraction of DMS in the copolymer, numbers after the abbreviations: weight average molar masses in kg/mol) were investigated far from critical conditions on the PDMS side of the phase diagram. According to these experiments the two phase regime increases by shear without exception and the maximum effects grow from 3 to 12 K as the PDMS concentration increases. Theoretical calculations were performed un…
X-ray diffraction measurements of Mo melting to 119 GPa and the high pressure phase diagram
2009
In this paper, we report angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction data of molybdenum melting, measured in a double-sided laser-heated diamond-anvil cell up to a pressure of 119 GPa and temperatures up to 3400 K. The new melting temperatures are in excellent agreement with earlier measurements up to 90 GPa that relied on optical observations of melting and in strong contrast to most theoretical estimates. The X-ray measurements show that the solid melts from the bcc structure throughout the reported pressure range and provide no evidence for a high temperature transition from bcc to a close-packed structure, or to any other crystalline structure. This observation contradicts earlier interpretation…
Synthesis and characterization of indium oxide at high pressures
2018
Multithreaded Translation of Ptolemy II Designs on Multicore Platforms
2008
Ptolemy II is an open source environment for system design and test based on component data flow. This paradigm tries to make parallel systems more deterministic and understandable. In this work we propose a technique to translate designs developed with Ptolemy II, into multithreaded Java implementations on multicore platforms. We have chosen Java mainly because Ptolemy II is implemented in Java and then we get direct code reuse. The counterpart is a certain amount of overhead that we expect to be less relevant as Java runtime environment will evolve. The main goals are to produce efficient parallel simulators and software devices with competitive performance level. We show by means of an e…

A Singular Multi-Grid Iteration Method for Bifurcation Problems
1984
We propose an efficient technique for the numerical computation of bifurcating branches of solutions of large sparse systems of nonlinear, parameter-dependent equations. The algorithm consists of a nested iteration procedure employing a multi-grid method for singular problems. The basic iteration scheme is related to the Lyapounov-Schmidt method and is widely used for proving the existence of bifurcating solutions. We present numerical examples which confirm the efficiency of the algorithm.
Diagram technique for nonorthogonal electron group functions. II. Reduced density matrices and total energy
1992
In part I, both the arrow diagram (AD) and expanded AD decompositions of the antisymmetrization operator A for an N‐electron system with wave function represented by the product of mutually nonorthogonal group functions have been considered. Based on them, new diagrams for decompositions of normalization and overlap integrals, reduced density matrices, as well as for total electronic energy of the system are proposed and discussed in detail in the present part. The rules for evaluation of the contribution of each diagram in the form of an analytical expression are obtained. Both the strong and p‐orthogonality approximations are discussed.
