On the saddle loop bifurcation

1990

It is shown that the set of C∞ (generic) saddle loop bifurcations has a unique modulus of stability γ ≥]0, 1[∪]1, ∞[ for (C0, Cr)-equivalence, with 1≤r≤∞. We mean for an equivalence (x,μ) ↦ (h(x,μ), ϕ(μ)) with h continuous and ϕ of class Cr. The modulus γ is the ratio of hyperbolicity at the saddle point of the connection. Already asking ϕ to be a lipeomorphism forces two saddle loop bifurcations to have the same modulus, while two such bifurcations with the same modulus are (C0,±Identity)-equivalent.

Carrier-dependentT c -suppression in Cu-site substituted high-T c cuprates

1996

We studied theTc-suppression by Cu-site substitution in Bi2Sr2Ca1−xYx(Cu1−zMz)2O8+δ (Bi-2212) with M=Fe, Co, Ni, Zn and in Bi2Sr1.6La0.4Cu1−zMzO6+δ (Bi-2201) with M=Co, Zn under variation of the hole concentrationp. We found a distinct behaviour between the underdoped and overdoped side of theTc-p phase diagram. Only in the overdoped regime,Tc is scaling asTc(p,z)=Tc(p,0)g(z) with ap-independent scaling functiong(z). We demonstrate the universality of this distinction in p-type high-Tc cuprates by comparison with publications on the La-214 and Y-123 systems and apply the scaling law to compare Bi2Sr2Ca(Cu1−zCoz)2O8+δ with the intercalation compound IBi2Sr2Ca(Cu1−zCoz)2O8+δ. The results are …

Methods for Calculating Bending Moment and Shear Force in the Moving Mass Problem

2004

Two methods able to capture with different levels of accuracy the discontinuities in the bending moment and shear force laws in the dynamic analysis of continuous structures subject to a moving system modeled as a series of unsprung masses are presented. The two methods are based on the dynamic-correction method, which improves the conventional series expansion by means of a pseudostatic term, and on an eigenfunction series expansion of the continuous system response, which takes into account the effect of the moving masses on the structure, respectively.

Are Coronae of Late‐Type Stars Made of Solar‐like Structures? The X‐Ray Surface Flux versus Hardness Ratio Diagram and the Pressure‐Temperature Corre…

2004

This work is dedicated to the solar-stellar connection, i.e., the close similarity of the Sun and late-type stars; in particular, this work shows that stellar coronae can be composed of X-ray-emitting structures similar to those present in the solar corona. To this end we use a large set of ROSAT PSPC observations of late-type stars of all spectral types and activity levels and a large set of solar X-ray data collected with Yohkoh SXT. Solar data have been analyzed and formatted to study the Sun as an X-ray star; they include observations of the solar corona at various phases of the solar cycle and data on various kinds of X-ray coronal structures, from flares to the background corona, i.e.…

AB Doradus C: age, spectral type, orbit, and comparison to evolutionary models

2005

We expand upon the results of Close et al. 2005 regarding the young, low-mass object AB Dor C and its role as a calibration point for theoretical tracks. We present an improved spectral reduction and a new orbital solution with two additional epochs. Our improved analysis confirms our spectral type of M8 (+/- 1) and mass of 0.090+/-0.003 solar masses for AB Dor C. Comparing the results for AB Dor C with other young, low-mass objects with dynamical masses we find a general trend where current evolutionary models tend to over-predict the temperature (or under-predict the mass) for low mass stars and brown dwarfs. Given our precision, there is a ~99% chance that the mass of AB Dor C is underes…

One-dimensional Ising-like systems: an analytical investigation of the static and dynamic properties, applied to spin-crossover relaxation

2000

We investigate the dynamical properties of the 1-D Ising-like Hamiltonian taking into account short and long range interactions, in order to predict the static and dynamic behavior of spin crossover systems. The stochastic treatment is carried out within the frame of the local equilibrium method [1]. The calculations yield, at thermodynamic equilibrium, the exact analytic expression previously obtained by the transfer matrix technique [2]. We mainly discuss the shape of the relaxation curves: (i) for large (positive) values of the short range interaction parameter, a saturation of the relaxation curves is observed, reminiscent of the behavior of the width of the static hysteresis loop [3]; …

Superspin glass phase and hierarchy of interactions in multiferroic PbFe1/2Sb1/2O3: an analog of ferroelectric relaxors?

2014

We have fabricated new perovskite multiferroic PbFeSbO3 with a high degree (up to 0.9) of chemical ordering and unexpectedly high-temperature magnetic relaxor properties, which can barely be described within concepts of conventional spin glass physics. Notably, we found that the field-temperature phase diagram of this material, in the extremely wide temperature interval, contains the de Almeida–Thouless-type critical line, which has been the subject of long debates regarding its possible experimental realization. We explain our findings by the creation, at high temperatures of not less than 250 K, of giant superspins (SSs), owing, curiously enough, to the antiferromagnetic superexchange int…

Dynamics of wetting transitions: A time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau treatment

1987

The dynamic behavior at wetting transitions is studied for systems with short-range forces and nonconserved order parameter. From a continuum limit of a purely relaxational lattice model in mean-field approximation, a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation with a time-dependent boundary condition at the surface is derived in the long wavelength approximation. The dynamics of relaxation close to stable and metastable states is treated in linear response. A divergence of the relaxation time occurs both for critical wetting and along the surface spinodal lines (in the case of first-order wetting), although the static surface layer susceptibilities χ1, χ11 stay finite at the surface spinodal i…

Surface-directed spinodal decomposition: Lattice model versus Ginzburg-Landau theory

2009

When a binary mixture is quenched into the unstable region of the phase diagram, phase separation starts by spontaneous growth of long-wavelength concentration fluctuations ("spinodal decomposition"). In the presence of surfaces, the latter provide nontrivial boundary conditions for this growth. These boundary conditions can be derived from lattice models by suitable continuum approximations. But the lattice models can also be simulated directly, and thus used to clarify the conditions under which the Ginzburg–Landau type theory is valid. This comparison shows that the latter is accurate only in the immediate vicinity of the bulk critical point, if thermal fluctuations can also be neglecte…

Density-Functional Theory of Quantum Freezing: Sensitivity to Liquid-State Structure and Statistics

1997

Density-functional theory is applied to compute the ground-state energies of quantum hard-sphere solids. The modified weighted-density approximation is used to map both the Bose and the Fermi solid onto a corresponding uniform Bose liquid, assuming negligible exchange for the Fermi solid. The required liquid-state input data are obtained from a paired phonon analysis and the Feynman approximation, connecting the static structure factor and the linear response function. The Fermi liquid is treated by the Wu-Feenberg cluster expansion, which approximately accounts for the effects of antisymmetry. Liquid-solid transitions for both systems are obtained with no adjustment of input data. Limited …
